Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

If this helps anyone: Filed yesterday, 1/28, took 8 hours to be accepted, this morning one bar on WMR. Seems normal, hopefully a fast turn around once PATH lifts. I haven’t checked transcripts yet, am a daily.

@Nicolelove: If you can see your transcripts on line and there are no bad codes, then you’re most likely approved. But, I have see people, myself included, that had the path message and have had audit and review codes on their transcripts.

@MoCarr2118: I think my transcripts did update with the ID verify code, but I had no idea what it meant….because I had never had to verify up until that year. It was shortly after when I got the letter in the mail. It took a long time before I got the code though. Weeks had gone by with no updates, so I thought I just kept getting resequenced….then I finally got the code, then letter. If the only thing you changed was your tax preparer this year, I wouldn’t worry about it at all. Usually there have to be at least 3-4 new changes before it flags a verification. I think a lot of us are going to see updates this next week, because the IRS seems to actually have their act together this year lol 😄

@MicaNC: I filed the 16th and accepted the 19th. My bar and 152 disappeared and now just shows still being processed. On some FB tax groups, it seems like a lot of people that were accepted the 18th and 19th have the exact same thing. I have been asking and not one person has updated to full transcripts or DDD. A few have not changed to still being processed and still have 152.

@MoCarr2118: when I was resequenced, I didn’t see anything change on my transcripts whatsoever…that’s how I determined that I was resequenced. As long as you don’t see any error codes, and the TT 152 is still showing on WMR…then there’s no need to worry, you just got pushed back in line. With the ID verify, if I remember correctly….I got a code on my transcripts that I had never seen before (can’t remember what is was)….then received a letter a week or so later, informing me I had to verify. Once I verified online though, I got processed fairly quickly. And I only had to verify because I had a few different changes that year….my phone number, tax preparer, and bank info. Hope that helps 😊

My “Where my Refund says this I’m assuming I’m done just waiting on the 846

According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds before mid-February for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits.
Check Where’s My Refund in mid- to late February for your personalized refund status. It’s updated once a day and remains the best way to check the status of your refund.

@804VA – I was accepted on the 19th so it could be because I filed early. But I always file early and have never had a problem. I hope we all see an update next week. I follow FB groups and this group and don’t remember this happening last year; the transcripts showing 2022 and nothing in them. I don’t have EITC or the other one either. Just me and one college aged son.

Just checking in with everyone! 😊 I always file early, but seemed to run into snags the last few years with being resequenced, ID verify, etc….so I didn’t file until the 25th this year. Since I missed the Tuesday cutoff, I know I probably won’t see movement until next week. I’m also a PATHer, so I know I have a few weeks before I see that golden 846. This year seems to be running a lot more smoothly for people though, so I hope it continues!!

@Chris: Mine is doing the same exact thing but I haven’t checked my WMR. On Facebook tons of people have the same thing but their WMR changed from in process to still being processed. I heard that wasn’t good. I would love to know if anyone that has a blank 2022 on Account Transcript has been updated to a full transcript now.

I am a weekly 05. Return accepted on 01/19/2023. Thursday 01/26, on my transcripts, 2022 wasn’t listed at all. Friday 01/27 my transcript had 2022 listed but only the bottom two-Account Transcript and Wage Transcript. When I click on Account Transcript, it’s blank. Nothing in there. There seems to be a lot of people that see the same thing. They also saw WMR change from being processed to still processing. Has this happened to anyone else? Has anyone’s updated to a DDD date?
