Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

IRS Update Cycle

Use the IRS Update Cycle chart to find the days and times the WMR and transcript update.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Good evening. I just have a quick question. If my 2024 transcript is blank (I have no codes) does that mean I have to wait for the letter to verify my information?

Is anyone noticing subtle processing differences from last year? I’m Path. This year, there’s some subtle differences. Im seeing date changes happening in middle parts of the week. That happens on only Friday. This morning, my account still showed that + sign for balance next to 2024 and the usual no return info, which is normal because that never changes till after Path lifts. That was until tonight. Now my balance is 0.00 and when I look at 2024, it no longer has the + sign. It has the 0.00, which tells me usually they’re done with it. Makes me wonder if that Jackson Hewitt post on their page from the chief finance person was correct: will release 17th, early eitc / actc filers will be funded by irs 19 and 20th.

@Momof3lewis: I do but I believe it will change because my transcripts aren’t completely filled out at all, and they updated this morning. The Account transcript just has the as of March 3rd date and $0.00 and no cycle either

  7. Lost in Space

@Stillwaitinginfairburnga: when you say accepted, im reading it as accepted by TT. Not the IRS yet. So, that email you received from TT is just outlining that once you’re return is accepted by the IRS, your refund advance will be funded by TT for the amount approved.

For everyone else, have you seen what JH tax services is claiming will be Path Act payments? Seems like they’re making stuff up for sake of gaining filers.

@Stillwaitinginfairburnga: We got ours maybe 15 minutes or so after we got the email that our return was accepted. You get a credit karma money card but you also get a digital one that you can use right away and you can transfer the money to your main bank if you want.

Question: my refund status changed on WMR to 2nd bar but say may be offset. Checked account record and nothing, called offset line and no debts found on either of our ss numbers. Maybe it’s already been paid and that’s why it’s saying no debts found?

Has anyone checked social security site to see if your earnings was posted for what I’ve experienced last year that was an indicator that I was completely done and just waiting for path to life.

570 is a hold. It doesn’t necessarily mean their is anything *wrong*, but its generally a code most people don’t want to see. Some 570s clear up on their own with not much delay. Some will lead to reviews/wage reviews/etc and will take a long time to clear up. Everyone’s situation is different.

@Starchild1111: 570 is not a normal code. It’s not always a w2 issue, but they are looking at something

I just check my refund status and it’s saying action required, something about they sent a letter requesting more additional information. Is there a way to figure out what that’s about? There’s no letters in my online account

Hey my peeps look 570 is not a normal code it is a hold code for many reason its used for review like I had several years ago its used if there is a issue its used for soft review instead of like 424 or 420 which is audit but a lot of times you can get 570 and next cycle if fall off or get 571 which releases the hold usually if you get 570 but don’t get 971 it’s internal issue which gets resolved and most times 570 pops up with your other codes if on path once you get your codes that’s it waiting for path lift and 846 and again don’t give this I’m on Path and got my DDD it’s not possible FULL STOP

I got mine yesterday. I was accepted on Jan 27th and I got the 5 days early from turbo tax ($25) extra. But my federal was deposited yesterday. State was accepted on Jan 27th as well but no word yet. Has anyone got there Kentucky state back yet? They said as long as we file before feb 28th we should get them back before they change there system. Patiently waiting for this state return because I need every dollar.

“Code 570 appearing on your IRS transcript signals that your return and refund require additional scrutiny before processing. Essentially, it means your return is on pause until the necessary review is completed, and there are several common reasons why Code 570 might pop up on your transcript”. we see that 570 after the return filed code then we start to see our 846 refund codes, that 570 doesn’t mean ur witholding amt is wrong please research before getting false information may make a panic for no reason

@Stephennotsignedin: yes that nots the case for the 570 code well not for the majority i have 570 code everyyear and havent caused no issues on my end that 570 is on all my transcripts and i dont have w2s to be entering witholdings make sure u get some info on that 570 code it may make people go into panic mode thinking there witholding is wrong and that 570 isnt what that means theres some VETS up here who can clarify that 570 for you for the ones who are inquiring about it cus its not a bad code

Thanks for posting that. Many think if they have child dependents puts them on PATH. Many don’t know that’s there’s a difference between child tax credit(CTC) and additional child tax credit(ACTC). And then they state they received their refund before PATH lifts which causes. confusion
