If an individual owes money to the federal government because of a delinquent debt, the Treasury Department can offset that individual’s federal payment or withhold the entire amount to satisfy the debt.
How do offsets work? I have been the sole income in my household for the last 6/7 years… my wife has a debt due to child support.. every year it’s been taken so this year I filed a IS form, it was recently completed and I was issue a $2700 refund, and the remaining $1700 (assuming earned income credit) was applied to her CS..
so with that said…[Read more]
I filed 3/1. Filed injured spouse on an amended return from 2015 and 2016. Husband owes. Just got a letter stating they are offsetting my 2015 tax return refund but when I called them they said it’s still showing pending and they haven’t processed the injured spouse form for that year yet. So now I’m confused. Anyone have any advice? Why would…[Read more]
I got a Treasury letter, saying they sent $ to payoff something I owed on, but it was very small amount out of my refund. Letter does not say anything about the rest of the refund. When I can expect it? Letter was dated 4/7
my husband just married owed a debt form 2003 because he never filled his taxes not the brightest person so my question is should i file a return for him so that he doesn’t owe anymore i think that if we file his old return then the debt that the irs says he owes will go away right or not be 4000 anymore any answers would be great. because now…[Read more]
My refund was offset. Everything was garnished due to my spouse’s department of education loan. My DDD was Mar.22,2017. I didn’t get my federal, but got my state tax. It’s weird because I called the hotline and they told me the amount that was offset. It was basically my whole tax refund. But if it was suppose to be my whole tax refund how did I…[Read more]
Have you tried the injured spouse form. You can possibly get half of the return.
Sometimes, the state and federal department work together to collect and sometimes they don’t (possibly due to timing). I would definitely look into filing the innocent spouse form if this was not your loan. However, depending on your tax situation, it may end up costing more if you file separate just weigh all the options before moving forward.
I recited my 2016 tax return in full. After I got it I saw a tax topic 203 on wmr, it went away a couple days later and nothing on my return. I also mailed in my 2015 taxes and I can see the transcripts. I have a 971 but nothing else and says my full refund number I should get. I called and they told me check would be mailed next fri (they won’t…[Read more]
My husband has an offset greater than our refund. We usually file an Injured Spouse, this year we decided not to (personal reasons). I saw this morning that everything was accepted and I’ll get my DD any day now.
Is there a way to find out how much we are getting back before we get the DD? Curiosity is getting the better of me!
Thank you :)

So, i filed an injured spouse form with my taxes, however i called the offset line this morning and they took the entire offset, my money was not saved at all. Is this normal? Do i need to send in another injured spouse form?
It really is a crazy process but even when you file the IS with your taxes they always take the money towards your offset and then usually 6-8 weeks after the intercept they return your money. This has happened to us for the past 3 years :(…You can always call 1-800-829-0582 ext.652 and ask them if they received your IS
I guess they took the offset, half of the return went to pay the debt. I got my tax refund and it was only half of what i was expected. I’m not sure if is went through bc i live in a community property state.
Hi…I was trying to see if there was anything I could do about wht is going on with me n my hubby income tax this is r fist year doing r taxes together I owed back child support from 3 years ago way befor me n him they r not his kids but they took all of r income money is there anything I can do to get his money back plz some one help lol
@DammitLana!! No, it doesn’t. If you have a balance after the offset, you will get the remaining balance on the day of your DDD on WMR. Call the offset hotline and see how much was taken from your refund, if you haven’t yet because it shouldn’t delay it.
Has anyone with DDD 2/23 had offset code 203 on wmr and still gotten their whole refund?
So I just did a little research and it looks like some have received their refund even with the Topic 203 and offset hotline says that they’ve applied refund to the offset.
I’ve also read many who didn’t get the updated offset code on their transcript until the day before or the day of DDD.
I’m in the same boat as you! I just checked my transcript and still shows no offset code but am now thinking it probably won’t show until Friday since we’re weekly and transcript will only update Fridays. My WMR still has the whole amount refund with the offset topic and my DDD is for 2/23.
I am probably still going to have offset but won’t…[Read more]
I have a question guys how long does it take the offset hotline to update?? They said i had a debt to an agency and gave me that number to call so i call and find out i didnt even have an offset it was a mistake so they said they would update it in the system so the irs wouldn’t send them my redund but if they do they can mail me a cgeck right…[Read more]
I got a letter in the mail saying my State refund was offset. I called the hotline and I’m in the clear with no offsets for my Federal return. But when I go to check the status of my federal return it’s still processing. Its been 18 days so will this take longer than the “21 days” or should I expect it with in the next couple days for my status to…[Read more]
If the WMR is showing we have received your return and it’s being processed a date will be provided when it’s ready and there is no tax topics but when I called the offset number it says that the offset will occur on 4/27. Does that mean my DDD is also the 27th, anyone?
