I had an offset. How can I tell if they took the whole refund? This is the message on WMR:

Your tax refund is scheduled to be issued on February 13, 2013. If you do not receive the refund by February 18, 2013, please contact us again. We are unable to take any action until then.

Does that mean I am going to get part of my refund? I called the offset line and it does not tell me how much has been applied or if all of it has been applied. How will I know?

      Thanks

For hardships after a Department of Education offset
                Posted by Maryaifl
@Stressed out: you can file a financial hardship request with the department of education.

                Form is here: https://myeddebt.ed.gov/

After that, get the loans consolidated together under an income based repayment plan. You can also defer for economic hardship if you can prove it (if on food stamps or other assistance, you qualify)

I know it’s scary to call them but they really aren’t that bad. They try to work with you. I’m dealing with an offset myself and they told about the form to get my refund back. They said it takes a few weeks after they receive it.

                Hope this helps.

@Stressed out: hey, I know a bunch of people have replied, I just wanna offer my support. I’ve been there too. I only have two kids but I owe about 20k to the department of education and after I missed too many payments they came after me hard- even wage garnishment- and we were paycheck to paycheck before that! It was terrifying but I just did the footwork and now I’m back in good standing and am slowly chipping away at the loan. Call them. Have a notebook and pen handy cause there’s a lot to do. I had to mail in previous tax returns, pay checks, proof of rent/utilities/car payments, ect. Sign repayment and rehab contracts, the whole shebang. But once all was said and done I didn’t have to worry about wage garnishment or refund offsets and my money can go back to taking care of my babies. Good luck! You can do this!

I had an offset. wheres my refund said my refund was sent jan 30th. the next day i checked again and wheres my refund said they were taking my all of my refund but $289. my refund was supposed to be $6,766. The state took the remaining $289. my offset was child support which i am current on. also i checked on the student loan i owe and the amount owed for that was only $2,000. What do i do can I appeal this? Also when i checked on my student loan i owe there were all these extra charges from the IRS. they charged me for collecting the debt owed and all these other absurd charges ive never heard of! Can they do that? Ive been trying to contact the IRS about this but can never get anywhere?

My direct deposit is scheduled for today, and it is not in my bank account. I have always recieved my refund on date given. Here is what WMR says (please let me know what you think)

Your refund has been reduced to pay a past due IRS tax obligation.
The balance of your refund, $5,381.61, is scheduled to be sent to your bank by February 4, 2015. If your refund is not credited to your account by February 9, 2015, check with your bank to find out if it has been received.
Please wait until February 9, 2015 before you contact us again as we are unable to take any further action until then.

An offset was applied to my refund for 3 years straight. They do take all of your tax return and will continue to take it until what you owe is paid in full unless the amount you’re expecting is more than your offset. If this is the case, good luck getting the remaining balance. Last year was my final payoff and I have yet to see the $350 I had coming. If you check with the “Where’s My Refund” site, even though it may say when you’re getting the refund, below the status paragraph you might see – “Please read the following information related to your tax situation: Tax Topic 203”- if so, your refund has been offset for the debt.

I have an offset coming but when I looked at my transcripts, it says the entire amount will be refunded. No mention of an offset. Any chances I’m actually getting a refund?

Thanks for all the responses. I checked again, it doesn’t say any amount. I guess they took the whole thing. Oh well. I don’t understand why it just didn’t say it was taking all of it. Why would it say my refund would be issued on 2/13 if there was no refund to issue???

Well for me, my debt was paid last year. I don’t know why they took this money out of my refund. I have a record of it being paid, but I don’t know where I put it at the moment. Do you guys think I can get a record from my payroll department? Also, if I truly do have an offset, shouldn’t I have received some kind of letter and shouldn’t my debt be reflected on the offset hotline? It never was and still isn’t. It’s saying NO DEBTS.

How long have you guys had this debt before they decided to take it out of your refunds? I wonder if we can call them and get some kind of payment plan going.

I received a DD date today of 2/13 and it says I may have an offset but it does not say how much. It still shows my full refund amount being deposited. Does that mean they did not take anything?

I called and it didn’t say I had an offset but I wonder if maybe my husband does. Of course it said that could update daily so I have a another phone number to call and check daily.

I’m so angry right now. I FINALLY got a ddd of 2/13 this morning (filed 1/29; accepted 1/29), however when I checked WMR, my refund was reduced due to an offset. I had an offset last year that took my entire refund, and I still owed $200ish afterwards which the IRS quickly garnished my wages for (the full amount). I DON’T OWE THEM ANY MORE MONEY! What is wrong with these bafoons?

                                                      What do I do? HELP!

I also had an offset. They FINALLY approved my taxes this morning. Gave me a dd of 2/13. It did however at the bottom state how much I was getting dd. The offset was taken out. Didn’t it give you an amount for your deposit? If it gave you less… then they took it off the top.
