Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

    • I Got My Refund!

I submitted mine on Jan 13th and was rejected on the 17th for form 1095-A so I resubmitted for my daughter and it was accepted a few minutes later. I just received my mail today and I have a 1095-A form as well. Will this cause a red flag or do I sit back and see if I’m approved and just amend it?

@Golly3112: that’s ok I appreciate you responding. No spouse here. I’ve never maxed out before. I haven’t seen one person say that they have been accepted today after they filed today as well. Usually right after I file I’m accepted within minutes.

@Kjammer09: My WMR says Return Received and I have the first bar. TT says pending. I didn’t apply for the advance, so I can’t help on that part, sorry! If you file jointly, you can check WMR with your spouse’s info if you max out your info.

@Needmypaper: TT still shows pending on your federal? What about for your state? I’ve seen some people saying that their state is past the processing or pending State whatever the first bar is but their Federal has not updated. What about you and when did you file

@Kels: I was accepted on the 24th, so since you’re a weekly…you will be in the same boat as me. The cutoff date for weeklies getting processed is Tuesday of each week, so since we missed it last week we probably won’t begin processing until this week. If you aren’t on PATH and you get processed this week, you might have a DDD for next week. I’ll have to wait until PATH is lifted on the 15th, but if you don’t have to…it might be as soon as next week for you 😊

@Golly3112: well apparently it only lets you check a few times before it doesn’t allow you to check anymore until the next day. Surprised because used to be able to check a lot. I think I only checked like three times lol. From what I understand sometimes TurboTax takes hours to update after wmr does. So you’re saying that your wmr says accepted? And you submitted it this morning? Update here and let us know if you got the advance etc or how long it took. This is my first year applying for it.

@Kjammer09: I just checked WMR and have one bar, (it said info doesn’t match when I checked about an hour ago) but still showing as pending on TT. I’m guessing I got accepted within the past hour or less and it just hasn’t updated on TT yet.

@Felice: I’d give it until the end of the week and if no updates, contact TT. Not everyone gets in the test batch and since today is opening day, then there’s a chance you’ll see something.

@Kjammer09: Mine hasn’t been accepted either, I filed around 8:30am CST, but I remember last year I didn’t get accepted until hours later. I think it’s just a lot on opening day so they’re slower.

I’ve never had it taken even 2 hours lol but they just opened so I get it. I’ve also never submitted my taxes literally 30 minutes before 9am which 9am is the time they opened
