key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Leeloo: How did you know about the code did you get a letter?
143 days of nonsense
@shelleybeanss: I used turbo i will not use again and if i ever get refund im asking for tt fees refunded
@Babe hennessay: not sure about a 402. Could it be 420? 420 is examination and appeals. If it’s 402 I’m not sure, I don’t see that one.
@Jennyb: Don’t give up hope!
They’re moving extra slow this year!😭😭
I see a few people updated with a DDD yesterday!☺️
What does code 402 mean on tax transcript
@Jennyb: I completely understand your feeling. But I do hope some updates pop up over night for all of us still in limbo. The IRS needs to be far more transparent about their reasoning for all this nonsense this year
I feel like I won’t see anything change in my transcripts I still have an as of date of April 29th and my 60 days were up 2 weeks ago. 😞
@Eddleman23: oof I’m sorry to hear that. This year has definitely been a massive dumpster fire
@shelleybeanss: I used Jackson Hewitt and I’m on week 17! Filed injured spouse with return supposed to take 11 weeks and if I don’t update tomorrow that’ll start my 18th week I’m sick of it!
@BeeBee40: cp05 is a review of income/credits, etc. the timeframe will change based on when you got the letter. I believe they normally say 45-60 days from the date of the letter
I previously had this message up earlier. Can I get some help please? Update the letters were cp05.
Hi everyone that’s left with us 570 and 971. I received 2 letters so far and my 120 days is up on 7/11. Only change I received since my 3/25/24 as of date. On Tuesday my as of date finally changed to 7/1/24. Is this good news that my as of date finally changed. Can someone please enlightened me? Also I filed on 1/29 and was accepted on 1/29
@Leeloo: I received the cp05
@Leeloo: I feel like every single person I see with issues this year used turbo. I’ve used them 8 out of the last 10. But never again. It feels like they dropped the ball this year in the biggest way
@Lise: you’re a weekly. Usually if you update it will typically be on Fridays for transcripts and Saturday for WMR
For example if my cycle code is 20241705 what does that means
@BeeBee40: what type letters did you get?
Or is that question too personal?
@Derek5248:
Same here but finally notice on wmr about a letter coming in next 2-3 wks!
I filed simple 1040 , 64 yrs old, same address for 32 yrs .
Not sure what they want from me.
