For all the people impatiently waiting on tax refunds.

A grapevine for taxpayers, by taxpayers.

Ask all of your tax refund questions.

The most frequently asked question we have is when will the IRS WMR update and what day are tax refund deposits. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to receive your tax refund.

When does IRS accept tax returns in 2021?

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on February 12, 2021.

When Can You File Taxes in 2021?

Most tax preparers will allow you to enter and submit your tax return beginning the first week of January 2021.  You don’t need to wait for the IRS to start accepting tax returns to start, but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January and some even later.  When you submit your return before the IRS begins processing, it will sit in a “queue” and be held until the date that the IRS will officially accept tax returns.  If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early in a test batch. This has resulted in early direct deposits in the past, but also major glitches because they are tests after all.

Where is the IRS Refund Cycle Chart?

2021 Refund Cycle Chart
The most recent tax refund cycle charts have already been published. The official IRS tax refund cycle chart has been eliminated and replaced with an IRS Information Guidelines for the Tax Preparation Community publication and the IRS says the best way to check the status of your refund is using the Where’s My Refund tool. However, various websites with refund calendars for the 2021 tax season (2020 tax year) have been updated with 2021 direct deposit and check mailing dates.

When to Expect My Refund?

IRS Refund Schedule Charts typically show that early filers whose returns are accepted before the end of January can anticipate a tax refund direct deposit as early as the first week of February.  The day that IRS deposits refunds varies but we notice trends that help you determine the time and days WMR updates and when your tax return is processed.  This is an explanation and FAQ about when the IRS updates WMR and Transcripts.

The refund calendar by the College Investor is a good reference which has been updated for 2021 here:  When To Expect My Tax Refund.

@PATIENTLY WAITING: You processed last Thursday, that’s what the 20211005 is and when you posted to the master file. The 150 is return received. The dates following are the second stimulus dates. The 570 is a review code, most likely for credits or income. And the as of date is the date that the review code needs to be resolved by or it will push out another week. The review may be resolved within a week if there is online verification that can reconcile it. If it does, you may update with a 571 review lifted, and a 846 refund code. As far as the refund being reduced, whatever they’re looking at, may change that if its reconciled.

What does everyone’s 2020 tab show on their Account Balance homepage? Mines says “Your Information Is Not Available at This Time
If you requested an adjustment to your account your information will not be available until that transaction is complete.” Does that mean my 2020 refund has been adjusted or is this just standard?

@Ag85: Sounds similar to my WMR situation. I was accept 12-feb and then on 20-feb I lost my one bar lost my TT152 and switch from “processing” to “still processing” but had all my other info on the left. I called & they said no problems. But I got a letter 10-mar (which they had dated 8-mar) and it said I was missing a “schedule 1”. So I faxed a “schedule 1” (I had to fill in just 2 lines) with a copy of their original letter on 11-mar. Now I waiting once again, but feel less ignored (ha).

@Momof2: I called the advocate line: 877-777-4778 & chose the Spanish option. After about 20mins of elevator music, I got a really nice guy on the phone which I guess was the intake person. He asked for my info (dob, social, address) then put me on hold for another 10-12mins & was able to tell me what was going on with my refund… hope this helps🤞🏾❤

@Sheila_33: It seems as though the advocates are being extremely choosy on whom they help. I filed a grievance with a TA for a hardship due to the fact that my return is also in that blackhole for 2/12 an 2/13 filers. I went through intake and was assigned an advocate due to hardship.

I also contacted my local congressman who reached out to the TA and was told they aren’t able to help because my tax return substantially changed from the previous year. (My income went down and we adopted our son from foster care and claimed the adoption credit). She was specifically told they couldn’t take on my case because the changes and worried about me committing identity theft. I offered to send a copy of our adoption decree and was told it didn’t matter. I explained my income went down because I was laid off from the largest online travel agent in the world due to COVID. I explained we were having a hardship because of needing to move for a new job and the fact that my wife is 100% disabled and needing desperate medical attention.

What is the point of a Tax advocate if they aren’t even willing to help? I’m so over this year already.

Wmr bars gone 3/1 still shows refund amount with message that its still being processed .
Called several times and got different stories each time.
Finally spoke to a competent rep willing to do their job and they say it was kicked out for manual review and she should be able to see why but there is no info why. No errors on my taxes and everything looks good so she doesn’t understand why. Have to wait until 4/12 to call backnand see if more info is available. No letter through the mail yet! Anyone else having this problem?

@dave: C freeze can apply to any credit, and I suspect some of the Stimulus payments credits are having that code placed because you’re not the only one I’ve seen with it. I will go into the manual today and see if there’s some kind of defined processing time.

I filed my 2019 and 2020 tax returns via “freetax” online all my returns and previous stimulus checks have gone to the my bank account listed on my return. MY $1400 stimulus check is going to account that is closed I’ve never put this closed account info on any of my returns or for a stimulus check. So WHY/HOW is my $1400 check going to a closed account? WHERE did the IRS get this this account info and WHY are they not using the account provided on my 2019 and 2020 return? NOW I have to wait for the money why doesn’t the IRS open the “UPDATE MY BANK ACCOUNT TOOL” so people can get there money sooner than freaking JUNE!!! it would be cheaper than sending checks AND the fact that it isnt the filers fault!!

@BellaBella30: Not sure what is going on with the advocates but I believe I’d fax a 911 form in to a local advocates office and see if you get a different response back. Make sure you explain your hardship status in the description notes.

@Sheila_33: i only claimed the regular child tax credit an recovery rebate for my daughter born in 2020… is that why C- code is on, because i didnt claim EITC or additonal child tax credit…. the D- code shows it falls off 3 cycles after coming on so should be next week… just not sure when the C- will come off… any idea?

Help!! So my return is now sitting In the errors department and it doesn’t have an error code assigned to it. Supposedly they are double checking all credits however I was referred to the advocate for hardship and they won’t take my case because I do not have an error code. Not to mention my 2nd and 3rd stimmi went to the wrong account. I need some help as to what I should or need to do. I have constantly called the IRS and still nothing. The E.M is set to expire on 03/31 and we are already halfway through the month. I need to know what I can do at this point. Any suggestions would be helpful..I’m in PA BTW! Thanks in advance!

@dave: C freezes are also used for path credits. Last year, people updated to their returns being processed but no 846 because the path hadn’t been lifted yet. They sat for 2 weeks with no bad codes until the system lifted that freeze on Feb. 15th. Then, they cycled thru again, and their 846 posted.

At this point I know I am most likely going to get check mailed.
So I am just going to check GMP twice a day or if I see others getting a “Mailed” date. Unfortunately, and it sucks, PATIENCE is a virtue with the IRS

Got my stimulus on Saturday – which means they went by my 2019 taxes, because if they would have gone by 2020 I wouldn’t have qualified for a stimulus at all. And I just checked my AS OF date and it changed BACK to 3/15. No clue what any of that means.
