key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a āqueueā and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
Thatās where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you donāt have to guess when your refund will hit.
Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your moneyās coming.

@florida305: lol thank you just trying to maintain some positivity
@Big ben: Frozen until path lifts.
No politics please.
Hey will transcripts still update with 846 code if youāre on path? I have all good codes as of last week and nothing has changed. Or is transcripts froze until path lifts
@florida305: Everybody eventually eats something. You gotta be more specific when you say “you ate” Most people are going to eat something before they let themselves die even if its tree bark or gnawing on rocks and chewing grass ( Not recommended )
Well I tried to look at my account transcripts for year 2023 to 2020 and it says this-the system has encountered an unrecoverable error processing transaction with a number and it also says we apologize for any inconvenience this delay may cause. please try again later or contact irs. that was for 4 years. Whats all that mean???
@Blessourppl: You ateeeeee!!!!
Anywho hey everyone! May your day be blessed! Evil, hate, and negativity never wins! Let the miserable be miserable!
@Mina Mina: I asked that yesterday and did not see answers. Each year (even using same tax preparation software – we do it ourselves online) we enter both my spouse’s and I’s driver’s license numbers along with issue and expiry dates. I had asked if those needing to ID verify had done that.
Not sure if that is the reason we have never had to or because our address has changed once in 30 years, only other change has been dependents.
@TNDIV: I totally agree. Thank you for that comment.
I wouldnāt take what anyone says on here negative too seriously, I donāt know you and you donāt know me so I canāt worry myself about a strangers opinion to say the least. Iām too secured in my life to take any offense from an unknown person behind a screen who holds no value to my life. I hope each and everyone on this forum receives their refund soon, letās keep our heads high and proceed with compassion towards one another
@Tax25: it’s because you keep calling. That’s an automatic flsg
@Mina Mina: It’s a way for the IRS to proactively stop potential theft of refunds by people who steal from others via fraudulent tax filings. Sometimes, there’s something that flags the processing of the return.
Transcripts are still unavailable I guess thereās probably going to be an update but I was able to check my transcript two days ago so I guess the system is processing for new updates
@Dentonj88: this happens regularly early February. Especially the first 2 Fridays of feb after opening day. Itās usually for a few hours and then fixed
Why do people have to verify? Dont you verify when youāre having your taxes done? I always use my drivers license. Just wondering
@Tax25: If you do end up needing to ID verify, I believe someone else made a post about how there’s a 14 digit code on your transcripts that you can use so you don’t have to wait for the letter to arrive.
@K: Hey I am 100% for wrapping it up after the final paystubs get reported this year and whatever is left for us to pay them or they owe us let that be the last time forever. They already killed overtime tax in most states so that’s a start. I could go all day about a restructure on how the other taxes are paid like SSI and Medical care but then again the no tax on overtime should be enough to pay for ones health insurance where as before they could not afford it. who knows. Do what you want with the money earned for all I care. Our product is time, sell it wisely.
In today’s episode of Never Have I Ever:
* The IRS site has a queue message right now…..*
“Due to high demand, you may have to wait longer than usual to access this site. We appreciate your patience.”
@4boysMeemaw: I filed NJ on 1/29 and still waiting. The earliest I ever received a refund was when I filed the first opening day and then refund deposited 3/8. We are alwayyyyys slow in NJ!
*****Update regarding WMR message****
I just spoke with a IRS agent that reviewed my account and stated they didnāt see any flags and that my return is still processingā¦. If I do need to Iād verify I wish they would just send me the letter! Filed 1/24 and accepted the same day⦠This is what finally updated on WMR *** *Please read the following information related to your tax situation. You may need to provide additional information to receive your full refund.
We received your tax return and are reviewing it. If we need additional information, we’ll mail a notice with further instructions.
@Clos: Definitely need to be re coached until any BTS fraud they may be part of is tapped out of their brains. Something this serious should never be overlooked so something has to be done. My only big concern is its going to cost more money to recruit all those new workers for the new departments that will replace them. They should simply be asked “Are you willing to commit to the updated Job training and the transfer or do you want to retire your position and seek other employment?” People can be coached, many will accept but not everyone will be willing to work with the new plans. Thats the risk of running a “business” though.
@Please help: I saw someone on FB mention that they got a path message last year and didn’t even claim any credits.
Their jobs mean something to families
@Clos: Facts
@TNDIV: My not me.
@G: If DOgE is involved, they have read only status at moment so…
@DOGE Supporter: That is a jump.
So I filed and was accepted on 2/5 I am a weekly. No movement on transcripts. I checked my tax account and I need to verify. It says to wait for a letter with a code. Does anyone know about how long it takes to get the letter. The message was not there yesterday.
@G: Maybe they will find the person who used my phone number on TurboTax last year. I have their email address and it traced back to some spoof account. As far as I know they didn’t actually get into my actual account since I set up 2 step sign in. That being said I did get a cycle code on my transcripts that was dated for yesterday and double checked my account transcript for any errors ( Had a huge error the year before last on TT behalf which was fixed in their software after the fact ) Hopefully you and I wont be waiting too long.
@shelleybeanss: itās not filled out. It doesnāt have the code yet. Just didnāt know if updating last night or sometime this morning would let you know if you are a weekly or a daily
