Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

I’m posting this in case anyone is experiencing the same issue. WMR updated with “received status” before TT updated to accepted. WMR first was say my info didn’t match. Then it stated that I exceeded amount of status checks even though it was my first time checking. So if you are experiencing any of these, I would just check the following day which is what I did and everything worked well so don’t get nervous or stressed.

@Kris: Hi I just have a question for you maybe you can check and answer me bac.k I filed on January 15 got accepted January 17th as well filed with turbotax fees coming from refund. Turbotax deal with Santa Barbara log in for 2024 account unavailable but log in for 2023 I can see that information from last year. Is it possible for you being that you have almost like my tax situation can you check Sbtpg.com to see if your information is showing for 2024 thankyou very much.

I wouldn’t rely on tax software for accurate acceptance status this year. I would check WMR because it’s been showing as received way before tax software acceptance status. Just a heads up!

I didn’t apply for it this year, but I’ve been wanting to ask this out of sheer curiosity – do people that apply for refund advances and have EIC/CTC/things of that nature still get their refund advance early?

When applying for the credit karma advance through TT…do you have to submit before you find out if you’re approved?

    • I Got My Refund!

Just found out my return was “accepted” by the IRS on 1/17 but TurboTax never sent me an email or a text message. I’ve always got text updates in the past. Their system must be down or backed up this year.

Anyway, Got the 152 on WMR. Waiting on the PATH. I got my deposit on 2/16 the last two years and 2/17 the year before that so I’m crossing my fingers for the same time frame.

@Starchild1111: I feel the same way. Still haven’t been accepted. Just trying to figure out what’s issue this year with being accepted. Don’t want to panic yet because the actual opening day is the 27th. But was just hoping I would’ve gotten accepted in the test batch. Being though today is a holiday, I’m not looking for any movement. So I’m praying for some good news tomorrow. 🙏🏾

@Sheila_33: Thanks. Also, this year I decided to use Chime instead of Chase. My chase will not release until the date given by the IRS and even then, it’s the next business day. So, I saw here some people get Chime deposits much earlier, so I signed up for one back in December. Got the card already. Is it true Chime drops earlier?

Last year my advance took almost 4 hours after TT updated. This year I’m seeing where TT isn’t updating to even accepted until 1-2 days after IRS shows accepted. I think TT is just taking longer to even acknowledge that the irs has accepted for some

    • I Got My Refund!

Okay I got a question. I went to Jackson hewitt to see if I could get their holiday credit line here a couple weeks ago. Before we started I made sure with the Tax pro that we were not actually filing my return yet because I was still waiting on two more forms. A 1099-R and a 1095-A and she said we wasnt. So I applied for the loan and was denied so I figured I will just file with TT to save myself almost $800! So I done the return and submitted it on the 8th. Well I get a call from JH today saying that my return was rejected due to not having form 1095A! I told her I was waiting on two forms and to not submit my return! So my question is this. Now that the JH return has been rejected will my TT return get accepted? Sry for the long post?

I don’t believe they’ll be any acceptances tomorrow because of the holiday, but Tuesday is an elongated day so testing should begin again and hopefully processing for returns that were accepted last week.

@Starchild1111: same here! Praying for an update tomorrow with some good news. I was kind of concerned with the ip pin because I never had to do that before.

@Dentonj88: it means they haven’t look at or started processing your return yet. I’m in the same boat.

Hello, does anyone know if TT gives the refund advance if you have dependents? And what are the qualifications? Thanks,

Is it normal to have the “no record of return filed” when you look at any of your transcripts even if irs has confirmed it as received and TT says accepted?

Has anyone that was in the test batch or anyone in general received the refund advance loan from TurboTax yet? I efiled on 1/8/24 and WMR says IRS has received my return but TurboTax says pending and hasn’t gave me my refund advance loan. Is it not available until IRS is open on the 24th?

@ChrissC: If your return has been accepted by the IRS, and you have no path credits, then you could possibly see a refund date this week if everything runs smoothly. :)

@Reb: Was your return accepted by the IRS? You can submit a return to HRB, but it sits in que until it’s accepted by the IRS. After the IRS accepts, it can take up to 48 hours to show on the WMR tool.

@shelleybeanss: gotcha..makes sense🥺 well, here’s to hoping things progress smoothly. Do you think EIC folk will see updates after the weekend (movement in WMR, IRS site, TT updates, or anything similar?)

@Dentonj88: they may have gotten an advance through their tax preparer. The advance is the only reason I used turbo tax again this year. I was going to go over to freetax but need that advance to move

@Dentonj88: the earned income tax credit is under the path act and it cannot be released before mid February. Unfortunately

Hi! long time reader, first time commenter. I filed on 1/12 with HRB and my info is still showing as unavailable on WMR. Is that normal? A week later..

@Kebee: lol Right! I see so many ppl saying how freetax is free and I’ve been paying $200 with TT. Every year I say I’m going to switch but dont want to get red flagged. Its always something

If you have EIC but you’re in a test batch, can it still be released before mid Feb? I’m nervous because my bills are really piling up right now (filed TT, EIC but ex is claiming the child this year, WMR on 1 bar but it does show received, turbotax shows accepted)
