Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Sheila_33: 150, 766 and 768 are my codes and in past years I was a weekly updater now I am a daily updater and that’s the first time for me. All my past transcripts have the same codes, minus the 846. I feel like everything is OK, just anxiety.

@PlzUpdate: Does it have all good codes just waiting on the freeze to lift? If so, you may not see another transcript update until the 19th after you process on the 18th.

So if my transcripts updated with what my return money I’m getting back and at the bottom it’s show my credits that add up to my full return just no code 846. Does that mean I’m finished ? Just waiting for path to lift

@Wasstategirl22: actually the Path Act law states “after” February 14th. What comes after the 14th….the 15th. By all means, get snarky if it makes you feel better about yourself. If anyone on Path updates with their 846 before the 19th, you can let me know I’m wrong. Otherwise……we’ll see.

    • I Got My Refund!

@Sheila_33: thank you for this, Sheila! Some people seem to be very adamant that the system will automatically begin processing refunds before the 18th, but I especially noticed the part where it says: “if February 15th falls on a weekend, modules processed daily systematically release on the following business day”. So no one will update ‘before’ or even on the 18th. They will begin processing on the 18th and dailies will update with the 846 on the 19th. At least this is what I’ve been trying to say lol 😄

Except for a 2 years ago when I was stuck in Limbo and got my DDD for March 2nd
It seems I always get DDD between 22 and 24th. In 2020 same scenario as this year path lifts Sat I got my money on 24th. I have always been 05 weekly. I have been on path message now 3 weeks as of stuck 2/17 and same good codes.

My boyfriend and I both filed 2/07. Both accepted same day. We both have the child tax credit, both also using hr block, and both paying fees out of refund. His refund just hit his bank account about 10 minutes ago. He’s had zero updates on trans or wmr. I have zero updates either however I haven’t received my refund.

Maybe they are releasing some early? Fingers crossed others get some luck today.

    • I Got My Refund!

@Honeybee82: Those tax sites are often conflicting amongst them and wrong. They are guessing just like we are.

I am guessing most people will see WMR update on the 19th. I am also guessing we will see people receiving refunds on the 18th, if not before. And since we have seen transcripts and even WMR update on Sundays I am guessing some (dailies) will be even sooner.

Pretty sure I have been thrown back into weekly (we added three children over the past two tax filings, and not by birth).

    @MaryB:
I agree that the wording on the IRS site is vague because they don’t give an exact date, and just note that it’s in “mid-February”. However, if you research the Path Act….it states that refunds may only be issued “after” February 14th, so that’s where everyone comes up with the 15th as the official release date. There are also multiple tax sites that state the IRS will lift the hold this year on the 17th…being 2 days later than normal since the 15th is on a Saturday this year. Here is just one article that makes that statement, but there are several:

@Nikknikk: yeah I completely agree. I think dailies will update with their 846 on the 19th and most will get it the same day if they have a NHB and no fees deducted. Then the weeklies will follow suit and get their 846 on the 21st. They say that they’re going to be pushing out those refunds in huge batches next week, so we’ll start seeing some good news by Wednesday 😊

@Honeybee82: that’s fine. But I do believe we will see it automatically lifted on the 15th and DD’s starting on the 18th. I don’t know where this 2/26 mess is coming from. Always recieved mine on the 21st and 22nd no matter when the Holiday fell.

    • I Got My Refund!

I’m a weekly 05 PATHER, and my refunds follow a pattern. Looking at my 2021-2024 transcripts vs. my USAA deposits and the refund cycle calendar:
    – Filed before 1/29 → Deposited Feb 17 (twice)
    – Filed on/after 1/31 → Deposited Feb 21 (twice)
    – Deposits always came before WMR/transcript DDD
    – USAA posts immediately, so deposit days vary (Fri one year, Wed another)
Since I filed & was accepted on 1/27, I expect my refund by 2/18 based on this pattern and the refund calendar. The earlier I file, the quicker it arrives post-PATH. Also, some days I deposited on Fri & the others I deposited on Wed.

    @Honeybee82: We will see.

The processing is automatic as well. It is ALL done by computer. It is rare for a human to see/touch a return. Most of the time that only occurs if someone is audited, they need to ID verify, or they call in…even most problems are sorted by the computer.

There have been years people were certain of x,y,z and it happened otherwise – and of course noone acknowledged they were wrong. I am not saying it is definite, but all of these “nothing before the 19th” are not necessarily true ESPECIALLY for dailies.

And someone earlier is right – we use that 15th here but it does not state a date in the law, just “mid February”. That could be today/tomorrow or Sunday/Monday – not limited to the 15th.

Got my state today. I am a pather. Checked my federal statements and the irs is true when saying to check back mid to late Feb. I always got my federal on the 21st and or 23rd. So I will have patience for that for next week.

I am in Michigan btw so expect to see deposits for your state refund IF you don’t have to verify. Patience is key I almost was facing eviction with a kid god works in mysterious ways and if you don’t believe in faith go by luck and positive mindset. I am praying you all receive something soon if not next week. Until next year all. Peace and blessings.

I dont know what happened to my taxes this year but I think I give up checking WMR and transcripts. Neither have updated.
    Filed early, accepted 1/27.
    cycle code 20250605
as of and process date on transcript 2/24/25
on wmr my topic 152 disappeared and remains at one bar, the verbiage simply says my tax return is being processed. (Doesn’t say ‘still’ being processed)
Transcript codes 150 and 806 for over a week with no change to anything
not a pather, no other codes.
I think mine is stuck in limbo somewhere…..

@ErisedMai: so mine is processed, just waiting for path to lift?

If your tax refund is being held because of the Path Act, this is the timeline

🔹 Cycle Codes Ending in 01-04:
2/19: Mass transcript update expected, showing Refund Issued (Code 846) for 2/24.
2/20: WMR should update, reflecting the 2/24 refund date.
2/24: Expected refund date! Some may receive it as early as 2/19 if they have an NHB.

🔹 Cycle Codes Ending in 05:
2/21: Mass transcript update expected, showing Refund Issued (Code 846) for 2/26.
2/22: WMR should update, reflecting the 2/26 refund date.
2/26: Expected refund date! Some may receive it as early as 2/21 if they have an NHB.

🔹 If you have a 05 cycle you could actually be a daily. Refer to the first section instead. Yeah, we know—it’s confusing! 🤷‍♂️

⚠️ Disclaimer: This is our best guess based on past years. The IRS can process things differently, so timelines may vary!

So did mine, I used Varo bank (prepaid card) last year and my refund posted on 2/15. I had all the paths credits.

My transcript is great. All codes except the release one. I have as as of date of 2/10. I see another of 2/17 and 3/3. Why is mine so early. I’m on path.

Say what you want. But my refunds were posted on 2/16/2024 and the year before 2/17/2023 then 2/17/2022 two hours after I gave birth to my past baby.

Don’t be worried, you are OK they can identify what bank you are using just bought the routing number.

The routing number tell them automatically what bank it is.

I have a quick question. I filed my federal on 1/28 and was accepted on 1/29. WMR has 152 which of course I’m used to, but my transcripts do not have any codes at all. I have the non filing verification. I have always been weekly, but I goes I don’t understand why i don’t have any codes on my transcripts. Is this normal?

@MaryB: the lift on the freeze may be automatic, but processing the 846 release codes won’t begin until the first business day after the 15th, when the IRS is back from the federal holiday. The IRS doesn’t process on weekends or holidays, so even if the freeze is automatically lifted on the 15th….nothing will begin to be ‘processed’ until the 18th.

As I said I would do (because I remembered from last time), I compared my husband’s transcript to mine. We file jointly, he is the primary/first.

His 2024 account transcript showed up early this morning, though essentially blank except for the as of date (March 03).

My account transcript does not even show 2024 as a clickable option.

When I compared before, mine showed in full once his finished. So check both if you are on a joint return!

@ChelleB: don’t worry too much. The same thing happened to me yesterday. My as of date was 2/17, changed to 3/3, I went back an hr later & it had changed back to 2/17. Nithing had filled in, no codes, all zeros. I went & checked my transcripts again earlier this morning & boom all good codes had filled in. Now I’m just waiting for that 846, which i really believe will update with DDD tomorrow. 🤞🏿🤞🏿

@Morris: Thank you! I remember you and I had a heck of a time last year and you had to wait even longer than I did! I really hope we process a lot more smoothly this year lol. Yeah, even though I don’t ‘want’ to be right, because it means we’re waiting one more week…I’m 99.999999% sure those 846’s won’t start populating until the 19th. The law isn’t going to make an exception like some people are hoping, just because the 15th is on a Saturday this year lol 😉
