Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

By the way, I will check in a bit for comparison sake but one thing I noticed in the past was that if I check my husband’s transcript (he is primary on the joint return) and my transcript, they did not reflect the same information. His had minor updates before mine. So if you filed a joint return, check both.

I filed on Monday (10th) and was accepted by federal immediately.

State (SC) showed nothing on the WMR tool until Wednesday (12th) night and immediately jumped to step 4/5. Checking my state DOR account though I could see the amount of refund as a credit on Tuesday (at the latest), by Wednesday it had zeroed out (meaning was sent).

As for federal, 2024 is now available for account transcript as of Thursday (13th) morning, though not filled out. It has an “as of March 03” date at this time. It was previously not available. Return transcript still has the non-filing verification.

Directly from the IRS.gov website as of 1-27-25:

Under the federal Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) refunds before mid-February. Where’s My Refund? should show an updated status by February 22 for most early EITC/ACTC filers. The IRS expects most EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by March 3 if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return.

It stats that WMR will change on Feb. 22 so we will be looking at seeing changes next week

@Umm: Transcripts update Thursday night into Friday for weeklies, it’s WMR that updates on Saturdays. President’s Day always falls on the week after Path lifts, but this year is different with the 15th being on a Saturday. The law prohibits the system from releasing the 846 code before the 15th, & since that’s on a Saturday this year, they will not officially begin processing until the first business day after the 15th….which is the 18th. Dailies will see their 846 on the 19th & weeklies will see it on the 21st. I know people have different opinions about the dates, but I think that’s exactly how it’s going to play out. I switched to a daily this year, so I’ll know for sure by Wednesday morning if I’m wrong or right.

@Honeybee82: the system updates Friday into Saturday so most of the patchers should see a ddd date on their transcripts on the 15th. Happened last year too. Presidents’ Day always falls on the week after path lifts and fathers get the ddd for later in the week that Presidents’ Day falls on. Been like that since path has became a thing.

@Tawana.L: by LAW the PATH act lifts on the 15th not before that day. It states this clearly within the law itself. I can still lift on Saturday and you should see a DDD the week of the 17th.

@Jenny04: we are thinking that weeklies will update with their 846 on Friday the 21st, with a DDD for the following week. However, if you have a NHB and don’t have fees being taken out….your refund could hit the same day you update with your 846 (the 21st). 😊

    @JAYY:

    Hi Jayy

If you received a loan, it shouldn’t delay the date you are scheduled to receive your refund.

Your refund will first go to the company that gave you the loan, once they take their portion they will send it to your bank in time for you to receive your refund on your scheduled DDD.

All and all it will not create a delay in you receiving your refund.

@Str8Nervous: If you’re a weekly and were accepted on Thursday the 30th, that means you missed the Tuesday cutoff date for processing that week. Since you didn’t update last week, I’m guessing you will see something this Friday. Some people process within days or the first week after being accepted, but typically it can take a few weeks to begin processing. I have a feeling you will update this Friday 😊

Hi everyone…I filed 1/30 & accepted same day in less than an hour. Still no change on transcripts. Still have the verification non-filing tax return. Nothing filled in on wages. Have no codes. I am a pather and weekly. Last year never updated to path but transcripts were filled in by now. Should I be worried?Haven’t received anything in the mail for anything. Anyone with some insight on this or going thru the same.

@RuthBaby: the dates change when they’re testing things or looking for something. This happens every year around the same time. They change and then bounce back to previous processing and as of dates. It appears they may have been looking for those that didn’t get stimulus a few years ago.

@Tawana.L: Law states not before February 15th, so your math does not apply.

If you all don’t know the answers, don’t make up stuff, don’t go by 2020, things are different this year, technology is different, stop giving people false hope or no hope.

Hello everyone! I file 1/26 accepted 1/27. My IRS account and transcripts have been complete since last Wednesday with all the right codes except the deposit code. I used TT and had fees taken out. Do they still use SBTPG? If so should my refund info be showing yet on their website? It’s saying info can not be found so I am getting worried TT messed something up on their end.

@Ineedthismoney: I don’t see where anyone could explain why the dates changed. I would like to see some codes populating on my transcripts.

This morning when I was scrolling through, a lot of comments were saying that their transcripts went from as of 2/17 to 3/3 I believe. I checked mine this morning and it changed too. However, I just checked again, and it went back to 2/17 for my as of date. Anyone noticed the same?

@MSRazorbackPhD: I just received my Louisiana State refund. I’ve never got it this early. And never before my federal refund.
