Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Does anyone know if a debt to Social Security would show up on the offset line or is there another way to check for it? Hubby apparently was notified he had a small overpayment to pay back for SSI and I’m just curious if they will take it or I need to make other arrangements to pay it back.

@Sharon Grayson: That is pretty much how it works, although it’s verified that it does work 5 days early *when* it does work.

So what I think TT is saying is that as soon as the IRS releases your funds you will not have to wait if you paid the additional $25 for 5 days early… normally I pay fees with my refund and end up waiting extra days because sbtpg likes to hold money .. so it will now go through Cross River bank and be released early than normal with TurboTax….I’m not buying 5 days though maybe 2 or 3….This is what I am getting from this

@Stephen: No. I gave up. The last person I talked to drained me. Lol. From what everyone told me, I have to id verify but I don’t have a letter because it’s not done being reviewed to see if I have to verify. What the heck?! I’m more lost than when I started. I’m wondering if I’d verify can clear itself or something?? But I doubt it because that would be too easy. A letter was requested for me on the 31st, and if it doesn’t come by the end of next week I’m supposed to call back. But the letter hasn’t been sent yet, or created. I’m over it.

@Justmeginger: no, I haven’t called anyone just yet. I filed it on the 31st. I received a text to say it has been successfully transmitted to the IRS. Then I received a text that said it was rejected in the go back and make corrections. However, I paid the fee upfront. Didn’t see anything to correct

@Str8Nervous: that is not a flag. As of now since your 2024 tax has not been processed you would be consider a non filler. That letter is verification for ppl needing proof for other years.

And to top it off, my TT email said nothing about a refund of the $25 “5 day early” deposit. Those of you that got the email, did it specifically say they were issuing a refund of the $25?

    • I Got My Refund!

The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act) prevents the IRS from issuing early refunds (before mid-February) on any tax return that claims the EITC and/or ACTC. You can expect to get your refund by March 3 as long as you e-filed, chose to get your refund via direct deposit, and have no issues with your return.

By February 22, the IRS’s Where’s My Refund tool should show an updated status for most early EITC/ACTC filers.

When you filed your taxes, you chose to receive your refund 5 days early to the bank account of your choice. With this option, you’ll have your federal refund deposited into your account 5 days earlier than the standard tax refund electronic deposit from the IRS.

Hi everyone…I went online for transcripts and saw that I had i guess what u would call a flag. Stating something about verification of non-filing of a tax return of the year stated above which was 2024. I saw a similar question a few days ago before I saw this of my own transcripts. But can’t find if there was a response to it. Please…Does anyone have any insight on this matter?

Hello all, hope everybody is doing good. I just did our taxes today and honestly I’m anxious about them. It’s our first year ever filing a Schedule C and I didn’t think that we were going to get a refund but it says that we are. 😬 Hopefully it goes smoothly! 🙏🏻

@Justagirl: The IRS says a specific date every year, and every year people get their refund before that date. Also wording matters. It says BY march 3rd, but ON march 3rd.

    Hi guys,
I just got to check my transcripts and I don’t have any codes. Says no return filed yet. I was accepted 1/27. Previous years I have been weekly. Has anybody else who was accepted then have nothing on their transcripts? Just curious if I should worry yet.

@Justagirl: not getting smart but it actually states : if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), you can expect to get your refund by March 3 if:

    You file your return online
You choose to get your refund by direct deposit
We found no issues with your return

I said this before I’ll say it again to no one in particular but PATHERS will NOT see refund until after March 3. The IRS website literally says March 3 it is not Feb. Do not expect to see an update until mid Feb (22 or thereafter) with a date that will be on or after March 3. From the IRS WEBSITE. Not turbo tax not Google not a person but the website states MARCH 3.
