Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Does the transcript movement happen all at once?
It’s 4:00am EST and my acct transcript has a few zeros only with as of February 24th. (Which is a new update today)
Return transcript still shows the “verification of non filing”. Can this change today still?

@jemar707: I could be wrong, but I think this refers to 26 U.S. Code § 24, that states that taxpayers are allowed a Child Tax Credit of $1,000 per qualifying child for the taxable year, provided they are eligible for a deduction under Section 151 of the tax code.

They must meet the Qualifying Child Test or the Qualifying Relative Test to be eligible.

They must be under 19 years old, or under 24 years old if they are a full-time student at the end of the calendar year and pass the Dependent Taxpayer Test, Citizen and Resident Test or Joint Return Test.

The Child Tax Credit and Credit also relates as it should be reported on Line 19 of your tax return.

I think it’s kinda sad that anyone would charge 25 dollars for “5 days earlier” They are basically saying they won’t hold your money and will just pass it on as soon as they get the authorization. Many banks and cards like Chime, don’t charge a penny to deposit without holding. After all, it is YOUR $. No bank or tax prep can cause the IRS to make your DDD appear 5 days earlier. You will get the same DDD with or without paying that extra 25 dollars. If you pay up front and use a bank that doesn’t hold $, like Chime and many others, etc. then you will get your dd the same day the your transcript updates with the 846 release code. That would be the absolute earliest. Am I right?

I’m a pather with as of 2/17 date filed 1/27 accepted same day. Checked my irs.gov today and they say they mailed me a verification notice. Same for my brother and son. I’ve never had to verify, ever! So hopefully I receive the letter this weekend and can verify online so nothing is held up. As of now my transcripts are blank for 2024 and im weekly Friday update. WMR message is “still processing” and return received.

    Hope this helps someone..

@jemar707: 24 & 26 likely represent tax refund direct deposit dates, Feb 24th & 26th, 2025. “Daily” & “weekly” likely denote processing schedules. “Daily” could be for simpler returns, perhaps filed by those who were 18 or 19. “Weekly” might be for complex returns needing more review. The PATH Act period (Jan 16 – Feb 14) implies returns with certain credits are held until mid-February. Transcript & WMR update dates are process milestones, leading to deposits on the 24th or 26th.

I’ve been trying to keep up here, but I’ve been so busy that I’ve missed a lot. I’m usually a weekly. No credits and no fees. Only have a blank 2024 Account transcript with as of 2/17. I see some had their as of dates pushed out. Is my date staying 2/17 a good thing? Transcripts have shown my new address since last week. But I’m worried because my husband didn’t change our address with his job and his W2 showed our old address. Hoping that isn’t going to cause any issues. No other changes. Just two W2 with same two kids we’ve claimed for the last 13 years.

@Azluckyfish: I got a 1099-misc after already filing and I wasn’t sure what to do either, but when I looked it up on TT, it said to wait until you’ve gotten your refund to amend.

@gratefulmag777: I sure hope this big transcript update includes me.

I filed 1/31 with TurboTax and paid fees upfront. I have the non-filing message too. As of 2/24 is all I can see with head of household…

    Last 3-4 years I’ve been a daily.

@cbrooking77: that just means you have requested your transcript from the IRS and at this time they do not have a record. Mostly saying they have not processed your full return. Tonight is a big update so you may see that begin to fill in around 3am depending on your location and they update throughout the day I believe…

@jemar707: 24 and 26 signify the dates in February that indicate the projected DDD’s for those who are weeklies, on Path. The number 19 would more than likely indicate the first DDD for those who are daily and on Path. Not sure if that’s right, but that’s what instantly comes to mind when I see those numbers 😊

@DebMom: I have Chime too but I didn’t want to switch up. I wanted to get some feedback this season. Then maybe I’ll do it next year…but TT is killing me. I did do the $25 for 5 days early but that took me over $200

@jemar707: I know it’s a long shot but I’m gonna go ahead and say that it has to do with Proverbs 24:26 emphasizes honesty and sincerity, resembling a kiss on the lips. Other biblical passages emphasize truthfulness and loving communication. Genuine love requires honesty, while discretion is crucial. Proverbs 24:23-34 covers topics like honesty, wise planning, revenge, and consequences of laziness. Solomon recorded these wise teachings, regardless of their original ideas.

On another note I’m curious why TT always gets me for $200.00 every year….I think it was free my first year with them in 2016…every year it goes up…
