Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

I have not started on my taxes for this year, and probably won’t until the next week or two. I am still waiting on an appeal they told me almost 5 months ago, to give them another 60 days. No clue how much longer it is going to take either because I cant get anyone on the phone in that department. UGH!

@KYMama22: It helps if you fill in your filing details so we have some more information. Do you have access to your transcripts online? Do you know if you are usually a weekly or daily? If you are weekly you can expect to see the Path message on Saturday on WMR. Daily you could update any day.

    • I Got My Refund!

@Sheila_33: Thats what tax act told me as well. They said it does not fall on me and I am in no trouble. They said the government would pursue my former employer at their will to collect and that there are so many employers who are delinquent during the pandemic era so it should not hold up my return but could not guarantee that either. They also said I have a valid W2 that was issued to me and the SSA. So, I have a right to file my return and claim the refund. The only thing they are unclear about is if those agencies would report to the IRS that the taxes were not paid so hold the refund. Tax act does not believe that’s the case because the IRS just validates my return with a valid W2 from SSA, but they can’t say for sure. I guess I have no choice but to file and hope for the best.

    • I Got My Refund!

@Sheila_33: SSA is not the only department. There is Medicare and FICA, all going to different government Agencies. At this time, I don’t really have time to go to those agencies and start a fight. This fight could take the entire year and I just want my refund. I have confirmed I have the right to file my taxes and claim those credits. I have also confirmed that SSA has received my W2 with those reported withholding’s and so the IRS would have no issues validating my tax return with the W2. So, if that’s all I have to worry about is the IRS validating my W2, then it’s a wrap and those agencies can pursue the former employer at their own discretion. They would not ever come after me because I did not commit anything wrong. The one question I can’t get answered is if the IRS will somehow know, the taxes were withheld but never paid and will they hold my refund until my former employer pays them. Everyone I spoke to the general consensus is they won’t. All the IRS does is validate my return with a W2 submitted by my former employer, I just don’t know if that’s true. It seems like Uncle Sam is always creating ways to rob us.

@wade123: Is there anyway you can contact Social security to see if those taxes were paid in like they were supposed to? I think that would be my starting point if I were in your position. They may be able to look into it more in depth and give you some answers. Keep in mind, W2’s go to Social Security from the employer and that information is on record for the IRS to reference. Good luck and let us know how it goes. :)

Hello everyone. To qualify for the TT advance, do we need to pay upfront fees? Also does it matter if you claim EIC? thanks in advance!

I got accepted on 1/18/2023 and I receive my Federal Refund today 1/26/2023 but My MD STATE refund status shows the return has not been processed. Does anyone knows how long until I received the process message for MD Refund?

    • I Got My Refund!

@Sheila_33 I have a question. I have a W2 that I needed to fight to get because the company went out of business in the summer of last year and thought they could just get away with not sending out a W2. That said, I am concerned they may not have paid the taxes withheld from my paycheck to the government. I know I have the right to file my return and claim those credits, but I have not been able to get a clear answer as to whether or not the IRS will hold my return and not pay it if my former employer did not pay them. Thanks
