Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

IRS Update Cycle

Use the IRS Update Cycle chart to find the days and times the WMR and transcript update.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

I am a pather that claimed EIC and CTC. My federal is pending in my credit union bank account and will be released tomorrow. Filed through TurboTax on 1/8/25 and accepted on 1/15/25 withfees paid up front. I wasn’t expecting anything till at least 2/17/25. It’s the correct amount so I know it’s my federal not state taxes. Should I spend it or will I get in trouble since it’s before path has lifted? Not trying to get in trouble!!! Advice please.

@Bishwhett: incorrect. It’s not “moot” to check. Accepted is fine and dandy but what people are looking for is movement. Has a person moved or are they stalled? Did they get “good codes” besides the one we know can’t be done until path lifts (846) or one that signals an issue. Like mine show everything is in good order:
    As of: 2/10
    766
    768
So I know I’m frozen until Path lifts.
I know this because I looked I was accepted.
Last year I was accepted and had 0’s for WEEKS. I checked daily and finally it updated to good codes. I then knew I was fine (I.e. no bad codes). It eased my mind. 😊

So, I got a DD od 2/05. Check SBBT last night, it says funded. All of the right info is there…but although it says that it has been transferred, I haven’t received the finds.

My question is…does anyone know if SBBT even does weekend transfers?

This past Friday was when they finished filling out with codes and the as of date didn’t change from 2/10 ; as the week before I had only the top of 2024 account transcript filled in with name and address info with as of 2/10/25 … the wage transcript blank ( per usual) .but it said 2024 return not filed – verifcation of non filing
but then this week all the info and codes and processing. Date filled in as well as the record of account transcripts but as of date 2/10 with processing date 2/17

@Harrisongirl: Mine was off IRS website. Did taxes online with TurboTax. Filed the 29 and accepted, refund approved with DDD of 2/5 and bank account showing deposit pending which means I may get it before because last year I got it 2 days before DDD.

@Harris: that was my theory that the ones that populated the week before with 0 their 2-10 pushed out to 2-17 but I guess that’s wrong if I seen correct where some with as of 2-10 stayed and they had 0 on transcript week before also so don’t know why some has 2-17 and some stayed 2-10

If you filed your taxes and they were accepted and your tax return includes a dependent you most likely are on the path. Looking at your transcripts right now is moot because the path has not been lifted. Anything can happen once processing resumes we have to wait you are driving yourselves insane trying to figure out what the transcripts are going to do after the past is lifted and no one knows. Start panicking after the path is lifted and you get crazy codes that don’t coincide with the 846 including a direct deposit date. Respectfully signed a I got my refund OG

@TawanaL: that’s impossible since the path act doesn’t lift until February 15th and February 17th is a holiday.

Most likely starting February 18th for Pathers.

    • I Got My Refund!

Okay so i’m a bit confused. I was under the impression if you claimed earned income, you were a pather. But I saw some conflicting things in another forum. So then I asked chat GPT. Answer: No, if you only have earned income and do not claim the Child Tax Credit (CTC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), you are not affected by the PATH Act.

The PATH Act (Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act) only delays refunds for people who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and/or ACTC until mid-February. If you only have earned income and are not claiming these credits, your refund should follow the standard IRS processing timeline.

Filed with TT on 1/19 accepted on 1/20 transcript updated on 1/31/ with DDD of 02/05 now heres where it gets spicy…… I had fees taken out refund also opted for the 25 dollar 5 days early deposit, so yesterday came and went and no deposit, I called TT to see what was going on and they told me even though my DDD is 02/05 the IRS hasnt released the monies yet, I check Santa barba’s sight and everything was populated and it says funded, it does say release date 02/04, imo there was no need to pay for a 5 day early release when at the most it might be early 1 day,

@New to this: same situation but I received mine on the 16th last year. Paid upfront in all. With the same codes. I expect to see my refund on Valentine’s Day this year.
