Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Yes there’s zeros on the top section but nothing where the codes should be. Is this what people mean when they say they have all 0’s?

@ClaimingMyKindleAsADependent: so “no tax return filed” is normal as Sheila mentioned – it just means you haven’t been processed yet. Mine has said that when I logged in for 21+ days after acceptance, until literally this morning when my transcripts finally updated. Hang in there

@Rubicon46: 1/26 was not that long ago and the time frame is pretty normal – its been slow this year. I just now updated to a deposit code on my transcript today and I was accepted 1/15 – I wouldnt recommend calling the IRS until its been the full 21 days, or you have a notice on your IRS.gov homepage that you need to ID verify. Otherwise, unfortunately, its just the waiting game.

    • I Got My Refund!

@Momof2girls1boy77: Most are seeing them on their Wmr which you may see tomorrow. The good news is this early in the year, they can resolve and get them back into the system quicker. My son, a few years ago had one and was able to get it back in and he updated the same time the path lifted and got his refund.

@Giselle1: It depends on your bank – I chose that last year and bank with Venmo and I received my deposit the afternoon my transcripts updated. Venmo is a no holds bank so as soon as the deposit hits they release. I noticed my transcripts updated last year on a Friday at 7am and had my deposit that same day around 330 – that being said, this year has been extremely odd, so I’m not really expecting it today…

Still nothing whatsoever. No transcripts, no updates WMR, no messages. I’m at a loss. Seems everyone else updated. I’m weekly and was sure something would happen last night. Has to be some reason things aren’t happening. It isn’t a complicated return. Nothing unusual. My 21 days since filing and being accepted will be 2/15. Not looking good. No need to call IRS until after the 21 days. Anyone have any new thoughts other than being a weekly or resequencing? And what are the chances that I would update next Thursday night…slim to none.

    • I Got My Refund!

Hi everyone, finally logged back in. I was accepted 1/15 and FINALLY have my 846 code. I used Turbo Tax 5 days sooner deposit, like last year, to be deposited into my Venmo account. Last year, my transcripts updated early Friday morning and I received my deposit that same day around 3-330 PM. i’m not holding my breath for a deposit today with how everythings been going so far, but we shall see. I’m just glad to finally see movement 23 days after acceptance! Hang in there everyone – I’ll update whenever I finally receive my deposit.

Just for clarification the date shown beside TC 846 is NOT a direct deposit date, and it never has been.

DDD dates on transcripts are far off .. just like last year .. SOON as you see that 846 the funds are immediately sent to the bank . If you had no fees and a NO HOLD card you will get the deposit today . Usually happens around 12-1pm for me with chime every year . I’m on path so I won’t see a ddd until the 20th after I cycle back thru for the 846 after path lifts on 2/15

@Momof2girls1boy77: Unfortunately it sounds like you may have beeb resequenced again. In the past transcripts did update all day but lately it seems they seem to stop in the morning.

@Taxtimebs: Transcript 846 dates are different this year, and WMR is whats giving accurate deposit dates.

@John-Jaw: funds can come on mondays, but no the DDDs on transcripts aren’t reflecting actual deposit dates this year. WMR is the accurate one now it seems. But if you updated overnight your DDD should be 02/11.

@John-Jaw: early deposit banks will see deposits today, traditional banks will be Wednesday. WMR will update in the morning with the real date.

Why do I keep seeing ppl say they have a ddd for 2/23? Are they really giving dates that far out?

or could the DDD date be sooner then the 2/23/2026 listed on the transcript? Last year it was listed as 2/24/2026 but I ended up getting mine on 2/12/25

My 2021 return is viewable, still shows no available transcript. Still say they received your return.
