Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@DI CAPRIO: Its a freeze on part of the refund. They’re looking at a credit. You may see a tax topic 576 on your Wmr in the morning. They’ll review it and release it if it is verifiable by internal data.

@Monee: I just had a strange feeling something wasn’t right because nothing was updating on my transcript so I checked my husband’s and his account transcript says “no tax return filed”. Of course I knew that was incorrect. Someone on here gave me a number to call. Sure enough we are getting a letter via snail mail to verify identity.

@MSRazorbackPhD: yea I don’t think I’ma claim insolvency I’ma just pray my refund goes through as it is and then I’ll amend my return when I get my refund to include the 1099C I’ll just pay the 1,254 dollars back I’m just hoping it want hold my refund up and I’ll actually get it so I can amend after that instead of getting a 570 or 810 then having to amend it without behaving any money until they finish the amendment.

@Tax time is not for the weak.: ugh I split my deposit between cap 1 and huntington. cap 1 always deposits first. I should have done more research. I used the walmart card for a decade until they started charging to breathe and stopped working with venmo etc and charging stupid fees. I guess I will be waiting until the 11th.

    • I Got My Refund!

@ErisedMai: if I don’t claim insolvency it reduces my refund by 1,254 dollars to be exact. I appreciate your help I’ll see what or if I am insolvency in just download the form to calculate insolvency. If I am insolvency for the full 5996 dollars should I amend to attach that form or let it play out until I get a refund or a 570 code or 810 then amend with that form

@Stephen: if you can prove your assets immediately before the discharge were less than the cancelled debt you can claim insolvency. Be aware this includes *everything* you own, down to furniture, etc. But in reality depending on your income/dependents you may not owe much on it if you amend.

@Stephen: I have had a couple 1099c in the past and didn’t receive a 1099c so didn’t know until it showed up on my wage transcript but both times never heard a word from IRS like 5 or 6 years ago

@Walter DOG: they issued the 1099C for tax year 2025 and I don’t own any assets and my vehicle is worth 1200 bucks that’s how much I paid for it 2 years ago.
And I don’t own anything and only got 200 bucks In the bank. And last year me and wife made a total of 32k. Based off this information would we be eligible to claim insolvency to your knowledge?

@Rubicon46: This always baffles me, but they make plenty of people verify even with IP pins.

One other question…we both had IP PIN numbers. Why would we have to verify id if we both have PIN numbers? Isn’t that the point in getting an IP
Pin? So they know it’s not fraudulent? I guess I don’t understand.

@Walter DOG: I’m not sure how to fill out that insolvency paper I do know only thing I own is a 1200 vehicle. My home is in my inlaws name and as far as anything else I don’t have anything of value. My wife has a 9k judgment on her but that 1099c I got is in my name only and I do owe the state around 500 bucks and I got a debt to T-Mobile for around 2375 dollars. And I got 6 kids and no expensive clothes we do own a PS5 and a computer neither of which we paid for was a gift.

@Stephen: your transcript updating with 0 is the norm now a lot of us updated to 0 on transcript last week and finished updating today so your good on that as for as the 1099c you most likely will be fine just let it ride if they catch it later they will send you a letter you know you might not even be required to pay taxes on that 1099c

I filed and was accepted on 1/27. My account transcripts are still blank and my 2025 return transcripts are not there yet.

    Should I be concerned?

1099c I got today would reduce by $1,254 dollars I efiled already on February 3rd and was accepted that day. My transcript updated today to them being blank with zeros. Is it possible I have to id verify bc every year I get blank transcript with zero’s it ended with me verifying.
Another question will this 1099C hold my refund up I seem some go through some don’t .I also seen someone already did a current year amendment and it’s already processed and they have all good codes on there transcript just waiting for there 846. How long should I wait to amend before I know 100 of I need to or not before I get my refund. Will it show a 570 if it needs to be amended right away or will I get a 810

Shelia_33. Just spoke to a very nice, helpful lady at IRS. Informed me they have sent us a letter Form 4883C. Nothing will move forward until I get that and resolve. I thought I could see those letters on the account but I guess we have to wait on snail mail. I think it’s some sort of ID verify? We both have IP PIN numbers so I know no one has filed using our social. This is our first year married filing jointly because we married last year. I didn’t change my name to husband’s last name. Do you think that is cause for a red flag? I can’t imagine that though, lots of people keep their maiden name. Any thoughts? And once we get the letter do you know how much of a delay or refund will have?
