key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

@DM: no mine does not say that
@ASDMamaBear: yes I am seeing the same message this morning that say your refund processing is delayed beyond normal
Processing, not sure if everyone is seeking the same message
I looked it up partial Government shut down is not affecting the IRS they’re still in full operation may affect paper returns( source Google)
Is everyone getting the delay message instead of the processing one? Is this bad?
@Godgotme: Unfortunately, yes.
If I been paying irs monthly
Will they still take my refund
Not sure if you guys even know but what are we supposed to follow here wmr or transcripts!!?!? This is baffling. Two different damn dates!🤬
@Lin: yes! Haven’t been able to login since last week. I’m on safari and have cleared my cache, restarted my phone. Nothing is working. It just sits there and spins like it’s trying to load but won’t
@Red Dawn: yes showed up Saturday
@Sheila_33: Yes, I think so also. Thank you. I will check WMR tomorrow.
@MelloDello53: We saw a few last week so I don’t think it has anything to do with a shutdown. I suspect its just a delay message because of the resequencing.
@BigCountry1087: I tried a different browser and got in..thank you! :)
@Lin: nope works just fine
@Sheila_33 Is anyone else getting this message on the WMR. We apologize, but your return has been delayed beyond the normal time frame. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information. Etc, etc never received a message like this so what does it mean. Is it because of the partial shutdown.
Anyone having trouble logging into website??
@Spicolisway2: my boyfriends updated to the same thing but doesn’t his transcripts filled in yet and it doesn’t show any notices since he opt in for paperless. He got a tax advance aswell so I’m not too sure what’s going on
@Red Dawn: I filed on the 26th by the 28th all my transcripts were completely filled in except the wages of course. And the PATH message appeared I believe on the 30th.
@DiddlySquatter: I was a weekly changed to daily a few years ago.
How about a silly hypothetical question? Whats the largest federal return one person could get? 🙃
Are there any instances of weeklies changing to dailies? I know I’ve seen dailies to weeklies quite a bit, but don’t recall seeing the opposite.
@Sheila_33: thank you. I have always updated on Friday but my ddd have always been on a Monday. Appreciate the information!
@Red Dawn: yes
@Red Dawn: Yes we’ve seen a few. And it should show todays date, but the IRS systems are all out of wack.
Also when I checked my transcripts the request date was dated 2/2/2026. But shouldn’t it show today’s date ?
Has anyone received the PATH Act message on WMR?
