Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Erica Christyne I filed last year with paystubs and ended up with the wrong amounts and they caught it ended up waiting until June for our refund. I had always used the last paystub, but last year, the company didn’t remove the insurance amount from the last stub which they had always done in the past ones. I didn’t catch, I couldnt believe the irs was on it and caught it. I figured I would just file an amended return when I noticed what I did. But no the irs has our income already to check.

Hello, all. I have a question. I worked three jobs this year and I have all the last paystubs for them, or do I have to wait until I receive the W2s?? Thanks… :)

@Tbatch Yeah I saw that too but that’s just one of those accounts posting to get people to go to TurboTax. The same happens with almost all other cards, they come and say they got the money 1 week earlier just to get people to sign with them.

I say that because it claimed it had gotten the money 2 hrs after submission, and no confirmation of being accepted. I can spot them now after being here for a few years.

@Jellybean: honestly my cousin had a baby end of last year she was just fine . It’s random when you start switching dependents with other people etc … like letting one person claim ya kids one year then you do it the next .. those the things they watch for. In my opinion you will be fine . They look for red flags like unreported income .. foreign bank accounts .. math errors .. etc it’s a list you can look up . It’s random which returns get pulled

@NYkhidd: oh ok I most likely will have a delay because I will be filing for a new child?

@Jellybean: Im in the same boat .. picked up another dependent this year (not really I amended last 2 returns) .. EITC was additional $2400 for the second dependent this year. I got 2 amended returns last few months one back in June 2024 for 2023 .. and another back in September 2024 for 2024 . I added the 2nd dependent to both they cut me a check for like $2200 both checks 3 months apart . 1 was a check .. the 2nd amended it was direct deposit surprisingly . I should be fine they processed the amendments fast wit the added dependent

Are we making out good with the turbo tax advance? I’m anxious lol

    Reply
  28. StaceyinPA

@MichiganSewq: I filed my daughter’s with TurboTax and she chose the advance. She hasn’t gotten the money yet because her return hasn’t been accepted. If you received the advance, you should be able to see that you’ve been accepted on WMR or should have gotten an email or text from TT. If you have been accepted then you’re in the Test Batch.

Any hiccups with CK cards in the past few years? Not from personal use

    • I Got My Refund!

@Buckey12: ha ha! I feel that!!!!! I will only take the advance if it’s more than 1k. If not, I’ll be paying my fees up front so I can get that DD on Friday (predicated on if I am still a weekly as I’ve been for over a decade now)! I hate waiting those extra days man! lol

Using turbo tax self filing this year. Going for the advance for the first time. Is credit karma an early card? Any hiccups with CK cards in the past few years? I understand that the remainder of the refund will also go on the CK card…I added my regular bank account to transfer it once it hits my ck card…

You have to process to lift the freeze and place the refund code so my suspicion is that since Monday is a holiday, the next day will be elongated and dailies will process with the freeze lifted and transcripts will update with the 846 on Wednesday transcripts. That’s my theory of how it may play out.

    • I Got My Refund!

@IHATETAXTIME: I file early so I can play the test-batch game. Also, just in case the ex gets a wild hair and attempts to wrongfully claim our children, I get it into the system and accepted before she can pull anything like she did with her other ex. Then I wait like usual and randomly check the IRS site just because. LOL.

This year, I am not taking any fees from the refund and avoiding 3rd party banks. That was my New Year’s resolution.

Maybe this has already been discussed, but how will the 15th affect Path since it’s on a Saturday as well as President’s Day on the 17th?

Good afternoon! Every year I hope and pray that path goes away. To no luck Ofcourse! I filed a bit earlier last year and it drove me insane! I also paid a lousy “tax preparer” who charged me out the wasooh for filing my return on turbo tax. I will be filing my own return this year (as I usually do) and I’m not filing until the first week of February this year. How about everyone else?

Good news! The IRS PINs went out a week earlier this year than last! If you look online it should be on your account so you don’t have to wait for the snail mail.

@Clos: How do you know if you qualify for it? I see people saying check line 30, mine is blank but I’m pretty sure I received all my stimulus. Is this an added credit? I’m so confused.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) receives information about your income.  It can be found on ssa.gov If income is displayed on ssa.gov, the only thing it means is that SSA has received information about your income. Not all income is reported to the SSA. Here is how it updates and where the information comes from:

–Wages reported on W-2’s are sent directly to the SSA from employers. Then from there, the SSA sends it to the IRS weekly. If your income from wages is displayed on ssa.gov, the only thing it means is that SSA has received the information from an employer if you had a W2.

The amount shown on ssa.gov may match your taxable income, i.e. Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) on your return, but it might not match in cases where you had additional types of income or more than one W-2.

–In the case you had multiple W2s, it might not all be there until all employers have submitted the information to SSA.

–Or in the case you had additional taxable income, such as that on a 1099, the SSA receives that information differently than wages.

With 1099’s, those are sent directly from the Payer to the IRS, not to SSA. In the case that you are self-employed and/or you only have 1099s and if taxable income shows on ssa.gov, that means you are somewhere processing. It does not mean that your tax return is fine or complete.
