Where’s My Refund?

Where’s My Refund?

When does IRS accept tax returns in 2020?

This is the date the IRS began accepting tax returns on January 27, 2020.

When Can You File Taxes in 2020?

Most tax preparers will allow you to enter and submit your tax return beginning the first week of January 2020.  You don’t need to wait for the IRS to start accepting tax returns to start, but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January and some even later.  When you submit your return before the IRS begins processing, it will sit in a “queue” and be held until the date that the IRS will officially accept tax returns.  If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early in a test batch. This has resulted in early direct deposits in the past, but also major glitches because they are tests after all.

Where is the IRS Refund Cycle Chart?

2020 Refund Cycle Chart

The most recent tax refund cycle charts have already been published. The official IRS tax refund cycle chart has been eliminated and replaced with an IRS Information Guidelines for the Tax Preparation Community publication and the IRS says the best way to check the status of your refund is using the Where’s My Refund tool. However, various websites with refund calendars for the 2020 tax season (2019 tax year) have been updated with 2020 direct deposit and check mailing dates.

When to Expect My Refund?

IRS Refund Schedule Charts typically show that early filers whose returns are accepted before the end of January can anticipate a tax refund direct deposit as early as the first week of February.  The day that IRS deposits refunds varies but we notice trends that help you determine the time and days WMR updates and when your tax return is processed.  This is an explanation and FAQ about when the IRS updates WMR and Transcripts.

The refund calendar by the College Investor is a good reference which has been updated for 2020 here:  When To Expect My Tax Refund.

@Topsykrettes: Earlier in the year, it took around 2 to 3 weeks to get put back into processing and see a refund date. As long as there are no other issues, hopefully it will be the same for you.

Update: my 2017 transcript has been filled out completely. 2016 transcript as of date moved from April to 08/10 so it looks like they are working on it (crossing fingers) and 2019 transcript as of date is 08/17. It looks like I am close to be done. Still never heard from tax advocate that was assigned even left messages for her supervisor. Can’t wait for this nightmare to be over.

If you have not received any movement on your return, please consider obtaining an advocate. They can look into your return and at least tell you what is going on. Fax a 911 form to your nearest advocates office, and they can call you in a few days and give you some insight.

Mt federal taxes were accepted on Feb. 5th. I had to fax in paperwork the week they shut down. I finally got tired of no movement so I called yesterday. The guy told me that if there were early tax returns that hadn’t been processed yet that another letter would he sent out after the 31st to ask people to re-send their paperwork.(so basically my paper work is lost) Here I go again, on the bright side maybe I will get it in August?!?! @lostFL-VET: Contact your local tax advocates office and see if they can at least look into your situation. Things are moving slow unfortunately and since the returns have to be processed manually, it just makes the process that much slower.

I received a cp05 notice on March 9th. then Covid happen and i’ve been waiting ever since. I spoke to a rep with the IRS she said that the review department wasn’t open yet and would be opening by the end of the month. Here we are in the end of July and I received a letter from Kansas City saying that I don’t have to do anything I am being reviewed and it will take up to 60 days, mind you this is probably a little over day 120. Does anyone know of anything I can do to speed the process up or be proactive? I could careless about the stimulus I need my return.

@Lalahony39: Its very possible that is delaying the 2019 processing. They want the 2018 done to make sure you don’t owe anything and if you do, they can take it from the 2019 refund.

@MominMD: The 570 is a hold, possibly for the 766 credit or wage verification and the date beside the 766 is when interest started accruing. The date beside the 570 is pending because if they can get the info they need internally on whatever they’re reviewing, then they can release the hold. If not, then they may request info from you to resolve the hold. You might want to consider getting a local advocate to look into what is holding it.

So just an update, I filed on 02/14. On 3/12 I had to verify my identity and was told 9 weeks. After ten weeks on 05/21 I was put on another 60 day hold. After calling the IRS several times receiving the same response then ultimately being told it would be another 60 days from August 1st I called the Tax advocate line and was assigned an advocate whom informed me I was actually on hold for wage verification because my W2 was misplaced between H&R Block and the IRS and not on hold for coronavirus like everyone at the irs had been telling me! I emailed my W2’s and Last 3 check stubs and now have a DDD of 07/29. I’ve only had an advocate for a week and a half! All this waiting and come to find out information was actually missing! Thanking God that this is all over! GET A TAX ADVOCATE BECAUSE THE IRS WILL KEEP GIVING A CANNED RESPONSE WITHOUT ACTUALLY LOOKING INTO THE REASON WHY YOUR REFUND IS BEING HELD UP!

Does that mean they working on it because before I could go on irs website and I can pull it up with no problems. Now I cant

@Cabinfevermom: If your advocate hasn’t been a lot of help, you might call the advocates office and request to speak to a supervisor. They could at least tell you if the return has been received.

@Scott22: A lot of times those are system generated because of the length of time a return has been processing, so probably not because of your call, lol. It’s too bad they can’t just dig deeper into the return and give a person an idea of what’s going on and how to resolve when you call. This year has been absolutely awful.

Is there anyone waiting for a previous year paper return to be processed? I am waiting for a refund from my 2018 paper return that was mailed on February 20th. The WMR tool does not acknowledge receipt of the return, should I be concerned? My TA also has a copy, but she hasn’t helped me at all! Anyone have a suggestion of what I can do to confirm they have it? Thanks for reading!

I feel like whenever there is a big stimulus update the transcript dates push out then snap back. I see a lot of people who were still waiting for stimulus received an update today. It’s almost like the system looks at all accounts on hold to see if a stimulus check needs to be released then snaps the date back if it doesn’t. Just my theory but that’s what’s been happening in my case.

They tryin to softn the cushion with this interest talk. Just send whatever to us at this point I dont think any of us will complain or even call them right? Lol

@Scott22: the system is trying to resolve by pushing that date out but whatever is holding it is making it snap back. I would still check again in the morning and see if it changes again.

@Amy19: Honestly, not sure which one will update first. Its possible all of them may update with the same “as of” date since the earlier ones need to be completed to determine if any tax is owed. Happy to see you and have a great weekend yourself!

@Jenn504: if the amended processed as the original return, its most likely a direct deposit. Congratulations and let us know what your Wmr says in the morning.

@Sheila_33- Hello! I am stil checking my transcripts on Friday’s to see if there is any change on my amended return. WMAR still shows they received it the beginning of March, no change on any of the 4 transcripts; which I am guessing won’t happen until after 8/1. Which transcript will show if/when it is being worked on? Thank you. Have a wonderful weekend!

    Dear Mr. XXXXXXX

I hope you are doing well. The processing center is technically closed but they have tried to get limited staff to go in there and physically go through the mail. Returns have begun to be processed. There are still many departments within the processing center that have not opened at all I did get the attached voicemail today from my liaison. I will continue to reach out and the moment the processing center reopens I will let you know. Congressional interest is already noted on your case so when they do reopen they will work to expedite your return. I can’t apologize enough that this is taking so long.

@Mbry0625: ok. Thanks for letting me know. I see two letters are coming (USPS) so maybe those are the letters saying that I’m fine. I did a google search and I see where some people got 8 to 9 letters back in Feb. I’m praying that their system is just stupid. Hopefully it will be dumb and anyone that’s still waiting for a refund – I hope you all get it soon! so IRS open to process taxes? I filed March and still have nothing done. I don’t get $ back, but owe and they have done nothing. Holding me up on purchasing because they have not completed 2019 taxes.
