For all the people impatiently waiting on tax refunds.

A grapevine for taxpayers, by taxpayers.

Ask all of your tax refund questions.

The most frequently asked question we have is when will the IRS WMR update and what day are tax refund deposits. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to receive your tax refund.

When does IRS accept tax returns in 2021?

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on February 12, 2021.

When Can You File Taxes in 2021?

Most tax preparers will allow you to enter and submit your tax return beginning the first week of January 2021.  You don’t need to wait for the IRS to start accepting tax returns to start, but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January and some even later.  When you submit your return before the IRS begins processing, it will sit in a “queue” and be held until the date that the IRS will officially accept tax returns.  If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early in a test batch. This has resulted in early direct deposits in the past, but also major glitches because they are tests after all.

Where is the IRS Refund Cycle Chart?

2021 Refund Cycle Chart
The most recent tax refund cycle charts have already been published. The official IRS tax refund cycle chart has been eliminated and replaced with an IRS Information Guidelines for the Tax Preparation Community publication and the IRS says the best way to check the status of your refund is using the Where’s My Refund tool. However, various websites with refund calendars for the 2021 tax season (2020 tax year) have been updated with 2021 direct deposit and check mailing dates.

When to Expect My Refund?

IRS Refund Schedule Charts typically show that early filers whose returns are accepted before the end of January can anticipate a tax refund direct deposit as early as the first week of February.  The day that IRS deposits refunds varies but we notice trends that help you determine the time and days WMR updates and when your tax return is processed.  This is an explanation and FAQ about when the IRS updates WMR and Transcripts.

The refund calendar by the College Investor is a good reference which has been updated for 2021 here:  When To Expect My Tax Refund.

    Hi friendly people,

I read the below, however, I am not sure what you mean by “As Of” date, I don’t see it on my transcript…

I filed and accepted on 2/14. Not expecting really any issues, I remembered checking it at end of Feb and there was 1 bar. (Received), can’t honestly remember if I saw TT 152

Last week or so, expecting my refund as Turbotax said 3/8, Now all the information moved to the left and the message now “Still being processed, a refund date will be provided when available…”

Followed the advice, and checked the transcript, N/A

I got two weeks of Unemployment, but subsequently got another job and made too much money to eligible for stimulus in 2019 or 2020.

Single, no child tax credit, the only real change I had is I bought a rental property (Filed schedule E)

Really don;t want to call IRS, anyone has any ideas on why it is stuck in being processed?

    Thank you ahead!

I still have no update on mine and I filed. 2/21. I have called and wasn’t given any kind of information they only said a date for my refund will be posted. Stimulus check pretty much like most people mine should be in my account on 3/17.

@Momofboys: is this your first time filing together? If they sent it over as one big payment there’s no way for them to process just part of it. The IRS would have had to send it over separately which typically if it’s filed jointly it would be a single
    payment

Been lurking on here for the past couple weeks, thought I’d share and seek advice as well. Filed and accepted on 2/12. Spoke to agents 4 different times in the past 2 weeks, and they were all pretty consistent. Said minor error, was out of ERS dept. And now WMR shows “still processing” with a Dec 2020 date where refund amount should be. Currently on hold with IRS. Not able to access transcripts. Am I correct to think the whole Dec 2020 date is a good sign

@Sg123: If its a math error, then it will still need to be manually restarted, then put back into the system. System can only correct if its something that can be resolved with the IDRS search engine online like with SSA.

@Pudemndabox: We were accepted on 2/12 and in the same boat…it’s looking like it’s just going to be a waiting game. No one can really get any solid information. IRS reps are telling people the wait could be up to 10 weeks, because they are having to process so many returns manually this year.

Nfcu refusing to release stimulus earlier than 3/17 claiming they haven’t actually revived it from the its yet. Basically they wanna collect interest on the millions of dollars sent to them before they give it to it’s customers.

Thank you for your knowledge and trying to help so many on here. I just got off the phone with them. All they will tell me is it could be 10 weeks and it was flagged for a 245

@Dave: Not sure why that was said, I don’t know the circumstances. But, from what I’ve seen, they don’t delay it. They don’t stop it from processing. In fact, in some situations, they get your return on the proverbial “top of the stack” to be looked at first, especially during a 60 day hold or audit.

@Sg123: Its possible you’re unpostable and someone is gonna have to manually get your return back in the system to cycle thru and update. If there’s nothing wrong with your return then you probably tried to cycle and couldn’t a few times. They threw you in Errs since its manually going to have to be restarted. The 3/29 date was most likely because of the stimulus payment. It snapped back and went back to focusing on the return.

@Creaxe: I honestly wondered the same thing when mine showed upped at 5:21am. Apparently when they say they do not hold direct deposits they were telling the truth. The only thing I can come up with is they had an influx of deposits on Friday that they sent out and the system was overwhelmed so deposits didn’t hit until Saturday, heck I don’t know.

@Chubsnano7: all you can do is wait for the bank to reject it and the irs will send a check. under the faq’s for stimulus the irs says that. the reason this happened is unfortuatley they processed your stimulus off of 2019 info since they haven’t processed your 2020 return yet. Same situation here this will be the third stimulus they have tried to send to a closed account and all i can do is wait for a check.

When I go into my IRS account it tells me my return has not been processed. I see no code, no cycle date nothing. I was accepted over a month ago and then sent to ER 10 days ago? So frustrating

@FallenAngel13: Have you got a cycle code for the 2021 return? If not, then that “as of” date may be to let the system know you haven’t been processed yet. If you have cycled thru at least once, then that date is stuck, and it will have to be manually restarted again.
