Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

I have been on this site since 2015 and I participate…. This year I was a spectator… I had the infamous 971 and 570 codes on my transcripts…. I am a weekly update my transcripts updated this morning with 846 and a ddd of 03/21…. But I wanted to encourage some of you guys who file with credits and EIC if you can hold off from filing early to receive cash advance as former filer who received credits and EIC it is better to file your taxes after the 12th of February…. But I really want to thank all of you for the help each tax season I really appreciate this site

@ShantayG: The exact same thing happened to me! I got divorced and changed my name with SS but not with work bc I was waiting to change my driver license and I just procrastinated on that so my wages and my IRS account were in my married name and SS and tax return were with my maiden name so that triggered the identity verification.

Has anyone got there refund after getting this letter?

Morning all! Fingers crossed we see some movement on transcripts in the morning. This has been one of the worst years I’ve seen for id verifies and reviews. Thankfully, not as many audits, which can take 6 months to a year to resolve.

@Sly39: When a review can’t be resolved internally, within that as of date time frame, then it is sent to the review dept and handled in order of received. The advantage to uploading any documents that they may need to verify during that review, is that instead of sending a letter to request, the verification is already on file. It can cut the process time.

@Pb1975: If the employer sent to the IRS, then that may be the issue. The SSA is where it needs to be sent to, since that is where wages are entered and then allotted for retirement. The wage transcript is reconciled from the earnings turned into SSA, and that’s why those transcripts don’t usually fill out until later in the year.

@Sly39: true. This year I filed under my married name and it’s like that on my ssc. The first time I got the message my tax return needs to be verified before it could be processed due to my name change and my filing status was wrong. But I also was told my return was process I just need to verified my identity. Ok well that’s done and now it’s a waiting game.

I know what all of these codes mean. And I called today to make sure the IRS has the correct address to send the paper check. Am I freaking out prematurely? Or should I be worried that i haven’t gotten it when it was mailed on the 8th? Other people are saying they got theirs on the 12th. I need some reassurance!

@Sheila_33: I was told the exact same thing about where income is sent to the the irs and then saw is notified. I asked my employer and was told they submitted the information to the IRS and not SSA. Thing is I’m being told my income has to be verified and that they haven’t received it from the employer, however my employer indicated that they had issues uploading the information and had to mail it. I have some coworkers who have received refunds but a lot who are still waiting like me.
