key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

So i called cause i been waiting for a letter. Theu said it was sent out the 21st. How long does it take? Also i had a change of address he said it would go to the new address is that correct if i havent processed? And finally when i verify what will i need!
Filed 2/27, accepted 2/27
wmr has 1 bar and tax topic 152
Transcript says no return filed and as of date of March 25
Any reason for concern?
Welp, unless it’s gonna update late-late, I’m onto another week of process and as of 3/04, 570 0.00 3/04. Filed and accepted mid January. So freakin done
@Alliee: I think you’re right…it was weird when I talked to agent on 2/27 bc she was looking at my account and said did you do BOTH parts of the verification? I said you mean the code and the questions? She said if you did both parts, you’re good you just need to wait. Then she said let me look one more time so we’re all on the same page. Then verified me again by asking my 2022 AGI, withholding, dependents (and their names, DOBs, and SS#s) and said verification case is closed should see a refund in 2-3 weeks. The next day my WMR went from still being processed to being processed. I read on another site that there is an issue with people needing to verify their return and identity verify but the system not knowing how to handle both.
@Mommyof3D: Thank you!!! I’ll be given that number a call today to see if I can set one up
@Denise N: Read my updated message
@Starr: Read my updated message.
The agent said the verifying case has been closed and my return has been put back into processing and give it some time for my transcripts to update. She said I shouldn’t worry just yet it’s still too soon since I verified last week. Honeybee82 was correct. So hopefully I can see an update tonight/morning or no later than next week. I do feel relieved that it was closed and put back into processing.
@sheila_33
When does the treasury send deposits to banks for ddd of 3/13/24?
Thanks
Agent is Researching my account
Filled Jan 31st accepted same day Been stuck on 570 0.00 code since 2/23 and today 3/8 updates to 971 letter issued 0.00 as of date is now. 3/25. Simple return only thing I have special is education credits for 2 of my kids. Never had issues in all my 28 years of filling taxes. Makes 0 sense.
Do transcripts update all day today and tomorrow? I have heard they stop updating around 6:00am a d also through Saturdays. I verifi3d Feb 20 online and Feb 23 over phone and still nothing. I’m a weekly.
@Starr: I got a callback. Waiting now. 5 mins to go. Ok, I will let you know how everything goes.
@Confusedmama: Did you say You verified on March 2 and u already updated?
@LostNthesauce: At my local office you didn’t even need an appointment. As I was checking in my number was being called. I was in and out in less than 20 minutes including going through security.
I still have the 570 and 971 codes. No online notices or letters. The only thing I noticed today is my as of date is now
3/18/24.
@Morris: same 😤
@Shelleybeansss: me too 🤣🤣
@Shelleybeansss: (800) 830-5084. Number didn’t copy over. Sorry.
@deJOHNSON: this number worked for others. It’s the ID verification number. I don’t know if they’ll require the code from the letter or not
@Eddleman23: this year is a disaster 😂 I just want an end in sight. Weekly as well so I’ll be stalking my scripts all day 😂
can someone please tell me how to verify myself if a letter hasn’t came yet I filed 1/30 accepted 1/30 T.S still say N/a for 2023 top
and the bottom is still showing nothing but a AS of Date of 2/19/2024 I called and was told I would get a letter May 6 which is just crazy I been waiting 5 weeks with nothing please help me
Woke up to the 846 code! DD for the 13th! I had to verify which I did 2 weeks ago online. It’s happening y’all. FINALLY.
@Waiting…Waiting….Waiting: that happened to me last year . I updated with an 846 around noonish last year. I was so surprised, because I thought I didn’t update that Friday . Then my phone went off saying I had a deposit . So who knows . 💆🏽♀️
@Shelleybeansss: I’m extremely aggravated about it lol I’m a weekly so it has all day to update so hopefully we could get an update today I’m over it… week 5 since filing ughhhh
Still sitting with 570 code 3/4 the only thing that did change was the as of date 3/25
@Mommyof3D: wow okay sounds str8 forward! How long did the interview take if you don’t mind me asking? I’m just trying to see if I can work it in for next week?
filed 2/2 been N/A on transcripts since, had a verify thing show up on my account, but that was closed on 2/14 (it closed itself I didnt have to verify) today finally filled out but with the 570 and a date of 3/25 next to it! What the heck, no credits just a normal return
@Sheila_33: just saw your reply from yesterday. So to clarify even though transcript shows no return filed you would not be concerned since I only filed on 2/27?
@WorryWart: did you verify yourself already ?
@Sheila_33: I filed 2/27, WMR has one bar and text topic 152… my transcript says as of date March 25 but says no return filed and has no information. What do you think?

@Waiting…Waiting….Waiting: ok
@EDDLEMAN23: I’m in a similar boat. Except my 570 has a date of 03/04, processing and as of same date. I’ve had no movement now for three weeks. No idea what’s going on. I’m starting to think the date is arbitrary and has little meaning since I’ve passed mine with nothing happening
@Confusedmama: I’m sure it’s just finishing up it processing in the computer.
@StephTX: concerned bc it’s acting as if I have no return on file and yet I’ve processed based on trans and just didn’t want to expect a DDD and then they slap me with a hold as I seen it happened to others
2nd week with no update on transcripts. Sitting with a 570 code with date 3/11 and also a processing date of 3/11. Does that mean it’ll wait till 3/11 to clear. I have no 971 code just 570 should I call?? Because this is so frustrating. How long does injured spouse take to process. ??
@LostNthesauce: Your Id, social security card(I took my dependents just in case) and a copy of your 2023 1040. Also she did have me verify direct deposit info as well.
@Starr: Transcripts update all day today, keep checking periodically.
@Confusedmama: why would you be concerned if you got a DDD? That’s what the 846 is.
