Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Fluff: I Called As Well N I Was Told Something Similar Then I Talked To The Balance Due Department Just To See If I Had A Balance So They Could give Me A transfer pin. I asked if they could also help me get a copy of my return transcript from 2023 for mortgage purposes. She said she couldn’t but would give me the pin and transfer me. The person I was transferred to answered n I asked if she could reissue the letter because the address on file is incorrect so I won’t get the letter. She looked the letter up for me and said she couldn’t resend it. I figured it was for me to fax my w2s I filed on my taxes to the error department. She said she saw they got the docs n If I don’t have my refund in 30 days to call them

@LLMom: @Golly3112: yeah my ass of dates on my older transcripts are weird too! 2020. through 22 all have as date of November 27, 2023, and my top two transcripts haven’t populated yet, but my account transcript for 2023 has an as of February 26, 2024. I feel a little better since I’m not the only one with weird stuff happening. Also, another thing is that my cycle code for 2022 was 05, I’ve always been a weekly. But at some point between last year tax season and this year’s, it’s changed to an 03 cycle code. Hmmm

I am still so confused about calling the verify hotline this morning…. She asked me a ton of questions to verify my identity then questions about my tax return from this year, just to access my account and then tell me that I have to wait for the letter with the control number in order to verify my tax return info… make it make sense!!!!

    • I Got My Refund!

Hi. I have a question about as of dates on transcripts. This year so far is as of FEB 19 2024. Last year has APR 23 2023 – Tax years 2019. Then tax years 2018 & 2019 has as of FEB 19 2024.

Our 2023 hasn’t populated yet and won’t until Friday (hopefully) no issues so far but I’m curious, does any one else seeing their past transcripts as of dates being weird?

    • I Got My Refund!

On my transcripts, everything is updated all income and refund amount. I am a panther so I know I have to wait till after the 15th just have a quick question. I have codes 150 and 768
Code 150 says tax return filed then says
    Cycle 20240505 then says
    Date 02/19/2024
Then has my refund amount for that day
Does this mean I should get my refund on the 19th?
Also I always check to see if I owe anything and under 2023 it says information not available at this time does that mean I owe money or I just haven’t finished processing yet? Thanks

I’m so surprised. I just checked my transcript and I have a ddd of 2/9. I have three kids (two over the age of 18) one under 17 and I’m so surprised I’m getting it so quickly. We didn’t qualify for earned income credit but we still have more than than one kid. And my cycle code changed from 05 last year this 02 this year. So confused but not complaining. I filed on 2/2 with tax act.
