Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a ā€œqueueā€ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@DanInTX: I’m an as of 2/10 and I have the good codes but I’m a PATHer and waiting on the lift so I’m basically ā€œfrozenā€ until it lifts so nothing (even my as of) won’t change.

@WheredaaCash: Whatever it is they’re requesting information for, try to get it back to them by fax asap. Sounds like you may have went to the ERRS department and they’re just needed to clarify something. That’s most likely why you aren’t showing on transcripts yet.

@Thealchemist: So this has been covered to exhaustion. It’s simply not possible. It’s the law. It’s nothing more, nothing less. There is no glitch, no way around it, no holiday that changes it, no employee issue. So with that, have a good one. 😊

So, I finally received the letter early this morning regarding my 2022 return. It was just an adjustment they made, which I was already aware of. So my current transcript is blank with an as of date of 2/10/25. But I have always been a weekly, so my question is will I see anything update today since that’s my as of date?

    Reply
  30. Thealchemist

I’m wondering if I am going to see an update tomorrow? I’ve always been weekly first year as daily.

(Although one year, I did get my deposit two weeks before the path lifted, even though I claimed my two dependence ). I have codes 150,806,766,766.

I am assuming if I get 846 tomorrow that I will get my DDD Friday (Chime). Is there a possibility I might get it earlier?

    My cycle code is:20250603
    As of:2/17/25
    Filed:1/24/25
    Accepted:1/24/25
I have topic 152 on WMR, PATHER.

@DobbyDo123: I filed 2/3 as of 2/7 got approved with ddd 2/12 also messages stated that refund is less due to taxes owed. I’ve been on monthly payment plan for my offset that’s why it did not come up when I called off set line .. but you can call the offset line and see if they can tell you the exact amounts you owe 1-800-304-3107

@DobbyDo123: they won’t issue the 846 until they get the requested information from you, what I was implying was that when there is an offset, it does not delay a refund. Once an 846 code is given with a date, that day ( usually sooner, depending on bank) is the day refund is deposited.

I filed with TT on 1/27. I got an email from TT on 1/31 that my return was accepted. I received my state refund on 2/07.
I looked today (2/09) on my irs transcript and I show a 2024 account transcript but when I click it the transcript shows that I haven’t filed a return yet and all the numbers are 0. I don’t even have a cycle code on my transcript. I do have an as of date Feb. 24.
Where’s my refund also just shows that ‘tac return received’
I have never had this happen. Why is my transcript showing all 0. Should I be concerned?

Is it normal to have 1 bar and have the PATH message? Usually it’s no bars with PATH message, right?

@KLA4806 The tax topic 152 is just refund information, you get that topic when you start processing. You will get another message when you update to the PATH.

DobbyDo123 Do you owe any backtaxes or offsets? The 826 code usually means the irs is possibly taking money from your refund to pay an offset or back taxes

@DobbyDo123: 971 usually indicates they need more time for one or more reasons. It’s a generic code. The letter will usually tell you what exactly they’re looking at. If it says 2/17 by the code in your transcripts you should receive the letter by then

    @Walter DOG:

I’m stuck on the first bar, message states: We have received your tax return and it is being reviewed.

When I look at my account transcript there are Five codes listed:

    150 Filed, cycle 05 (2/17)
    806 w2 or 1099 withholding (4/15)
    826 credit transferred out (2/17)
    826 credit transferred out (2/17)
    971 notice issued 2/17

@Amy Spence: I don’t have code 846 on my transcript the last code after the two 826 is notice 971 issued 2/17/25. I don’t see anything in my notices/letters on my account either.
