Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@HappyInNc: only for some, and it’s for very few. Anyone with eitc or actc can’t move fast. Very simple returns with zero changed information tend to move a little faster. But it is still not very common to process in less than 2 weeks

@CrazedinGA: it doesn’t protect against hikes per se. It protects against someone fraudulently claiming those credits. Thousands upon thousands of tax returns processed for years claiming children that weren’t there’s and credits that they didn’t qualify for. This is what happens when too many people defraud the system

@TheMadness21: don’t know why some as of dates are changing all I know since 2015 when path was law my return froze with good codes and the as of dates stayed until the path lifted and 846 was added then the as of date pushed out this is first year doing this I wonder if daily is staying at the same as of date and weekly pushing out this year for some reason

The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act) prevents the IRS from issuing early refunds (before mid-February) on any tax return that claims the EITC and/or ACTC. You can expect to get your refund by March 3 as long as you e-filed, chose to get your refund via direct deposit, and have no issues with your return.

By February 22, the IRS’s Where’s My Refund tool should show an updated status for most early EITC/ACTC filers.

Not as if we don’t know already but TurboTax just sent this email out we should get the path update soon … I also want a refund for paying $25 for it to be so called sent early ——————We’re reaching out because you might have received incorrect information about when to expect your tax refund. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused, and want to help ensure you have the correct timeline from the IRS since you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and/or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC).

I just got a letter from TT stating that ppl with EITC and CTC should see dd on March 3, 2025. If my transcript is complete minus the release code would it really take until March 3???? Path is such a long walk. Can someone explain how making everyone with these credits wait protects Americans from Tax Hikes???

@Monee: that is actually how they verify you now and how their systems are set up. the systems randomly generates a series of questions to be asked and once all that info is verified, the system then gives the agent access to your account. the agent cant see anything until that verification takes places and it passes. its a pain sometimes but its a safeguard against those who try and steal your identity

(My transcripts haven’t filled in yet) Also I tried calling the number they give you to find out who the debt it owed to but I keep getting transferred. Will they just send a letter?

@Walter DOG: this is the first year i decided to file before the PATH lift. i usually wait until after it lifts to file but i decided this year to be different. i called in last week and spoke with a really nice agent because i wanted to see if my wife’s w2 was showing up in their system. while i was on the phone with her, i asked her about the PATH lift being on the 15th which is a saturday this year. she looked at it and said the system shows the hold actually being listed as lifting on monday the 17th. i said but the 17th is a fed holiday and she said yes it is but the hold lifts that day so the system can process overnight. thats the only reason i can think of for the as of dates moving

@Monee: i actually found a trick since they changed the phone system this year. once the new AI voice starts talking and asking you questions. when she says ‘what can i help you with?’, respond with ‘correct an agency error’ and you will be put right in to the live agent queue. if your 21 days ended yesterday, then they cant deny telling you what the issues are. hopefully you find out!

@Monee: it has to be 21 days since you were accepted for them to be able to look and see what is going on. very rarely will an agent make the effort to explore your account before then but there are a few who “bend” the rules to check things out. how long were you stuck in number-tapping hell before you got to an agent?

    • I Got My Refund!

I just found out how to speak to a person at the 1040 number. Of course they are all still giving me the same irs didn’t start accepting until the 27th crap. Do I just keep calling until I get someone who actually knows what’s going on?

@Monee: keep me updated on your status please. You can also try calling the id verification line and tell them you were told you needed to verify and that you could do so without the letter due to disaster area see what they say. Only thing the can say is no they can’t lol

@batgirlpa: exactly like @shelleybeanss said, they can update all through the day. A lot of the ‘mass updates’ happen overnight, but they do sprinkle in throughout the day. One time mine updated at like 1:00 in the afternoon, so they can still roll in. 😊

@Cristina aka im_so_broke_it_hurts: If I didn’t use a third party bank and paid to file up front, I got my DD the day the IRS issued the release code on my transcripts.l…several days before WMR DDD. It depends on whether your bank holds funds or just releases them as soon as they are issued, IMHO.

@Monee: I would call to schedule a appointment tell them ur calling to schedule bc u need to see what u need to do with some forms you got for last year’s taxes if they ask what kinds forms just tell them your not really sure what they are talking about and would like to sit down to go over them tell them it’s for 2023 taxes not this year’s and then they will schedule u.

@Bolinger4: mine said the same thing and after a week if seeing still being processed and a refund date will be provided when available I called and it turned out I had to verify and I did. Didn’t need the letter due to me living in disaster area. And today my wmr msg changed to it is being processed.it did say it was Still being processed. +18445455640 is the number I called to schedule a appointment and that’s how I found out I needed to verify.

@Big ben: that is because you are not pressed or cycled thru. Even tho u filed and accepted. The IRS has NOT processed your return! Most likely you will update this weekend or next. Most of the ppl who were in the “test batch” are the ones who have codes/ filled in transcripts. Accepted and processed are two different things. Hope this helps.

Filed and accepted 1/21. Have been daily for several years. SSA wages just updated this past Monday. Have been on still processing for over a week. No notices online. Account Transcripts are blank with an as of date of 2/10. What does this mean? Not a Pather.

@Walter DOG: Good morning all 🌞! Mrs. Shelia is in and out because she has been under the weather with the foul…from the post I seen.I have seen mine like that last year. It doesn’t mean anything bad at all. From what I seen it was due to the fact that I filed early and it was just sitting there until the path lifted.
