key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a āqueueā and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Stillconfused: Same here except I filed/accepted 2/7. Told it’s in errors, no letters no issues on my part. Just system processing issue. Says it should clear up in 10 weeks (4/18).
@Just lurkin: Thank you for responding. I saw this through a Google search. This just makes it even more strange. I know for sure some agents say whatever to get people off the phone now. It makes no sense.
@Stillconfused: I have the same issue. Were you sent any letters?
@Chitown: Thank you for letting me know. I haven’t been through this before.
@Stillconfused: this happened to me in 2021. I didnāt get my refund until the end of April.
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could help me. My taxes were accepted on January 30th, and I still have N/A on everything except wages, still at one bar on WMR and still being processed. I called the IRS, and all they could say was that’s in the errors department and that he couldn’t see anything. Does anyone have any idea what this means, or has been in this situation before?
@Thequeenofbee: Anything that has to be manually done goes in order of received.
An advocate could get it looked at sooner.
@NVDIV: me too
Any one have any insight on michigan refund time ? I was accepted on 3-7. Just says accepted. When checking ā¦.
@So stressed: What is IRS code 249?
§249, Bond Premium on Repurchase
A corporation is considered to pay a repurchase premium for calling its bonds if the amount of the repurchase price exceeds the issue price (adjusted accordingly to reflect original issue discount amortized over the life of the bond or any premium originally reported as income).
Does anyone know what code 249 is? I was told it was a system problem code by the irs, but I have not been able to find any info on that code. At this point I don’t believe anything they say. He said it’s a problem with their system nothing wrong with my taxes, hence the 10 week wait (4/18) to correct itself. And yes I call them every week to see what the newest fable they have for me.
Just checking to see if any 4883C letter receivers have any updates since verifying.
Yep it was a referral for an advocate.
Everybody, i’m speaking to a very nice agent who answered in 3 mins., she researched my account and stated that they just need a little more time (according to the system). I mentioned my medical situation at the beginning of the call and “she” said she is going to fill out a form (i’m on hold) to try to get it worked a lot faster (advocate, i guess). I will know more when she returns to the line. Whether i get the help or not, this lady is going above and beyond. She even laughed about something i said and apologized for laughing because (she said) they are not supposed to do that (wow).
@NVDIV: hey friend! Just wanted to let you know I’m still in the exact same boat with ya. Not a single update. It’s been since January!! The original letter that doesn’t show on transcripts as well. You know the routine. You’re not alone in this weird twilight zone
@Mlronq: thank you. I hope you all get answers too. I just gave updates to let people know how I got my situation fixed. Also answered some of my on questions too lol.
@Mlronq, I am waiting right alongside with you : (
Whoās still waiting with me? :(
@IGMR Admin: thank you. I had an account before but I didnt know you could put all the details there.
@ Gapeach30 so happy you finally got your situation resolved!!!
@Sheila_33 Yes the 846 has the full expected refund amount.
Since it does get slow around here, consider creating an account to enter your filing details so they appear under your name when you comment. That will help others to know if you have similar situations.
Here is how: https://igotmyrefund.com/filing-details/
@NVDIV: It gets really quiet this time of year since so many people got their refund. But there is always an unfortunate group of people still waiting.
@NVDIV: hello Iām giving status of my situation because yes this page is dead. Just telling people what happened and how I got answers because a lot are still waiting. Check my previous post. I got my 846 overnight changed from 05 cycle to 02 this year always been 05.Dd is 3-31. Good luck and I hope you all get results sooner than later. Itās sad how they leave people just waiting for bs reasons with no response other than calling and getting generic information.
I noticed this page is quiet now.. i guess we all gave up on it. I’m about to as well lol.. I’ve never seen the IRS be as incompetent as they have in the past 5 years. They just took covid and used it as an excuse to further their neglect.. My question is how much longer can people use covid as an excuse and get away with it.
@Nickc013: I got the 570 then they sent the notice of delay without even updating my transcript to show that a letter was sent… this was weeks and weeks ago and still nothing. got told once to wait 60 days then got told to wait 120 days.. still nothing.. not even any date updates.. still sitting at the as of dates and those dates have gone and passed..
Did anyone mail their tax return 2023 any news on how long to get refund or how to know when irs will check the pobox I mailed it to
@What the Heck: wow lucky Iāve been on audit since 2/17 got my letter 3/06 and sent everything in online same day I got it because I knew it was coming I was ready. Still no change I got a letter today saying they received it and to do nothing but wait until mid June to hear something I would rather be in ur shoes just not having an 846 and knowing ur audit is over that fast . Did u talk to someone or just get super lucky if happening that fast ? What did u have to send in like what was the audit over if u donāt mind me asking
Anyone else ever been in an audit and sent all ur stuff in and then get a letter saying they recieved your items they requested and to do nothing at this time and should hear something by a date thatās 3 months from now ( in my case sometime in June ) but ended up getting their refund shortly after that letter ? Hoping for some hope cuz man I need my money!
Probably nothing a tax advocate can do in this case either aye ?
@Dirtydog218: filed accepted Jan 27th. Transcripts all n/a for 2 months. No letters, no notices. Everytime I call I’m. Told to wait and that there is no problems, no letters coming and that it’s just somehow stuck in processing. People filed weeks after me, had letters come, fixed their issues and got there money already but I cant even get processed in 2 months. This shit is a straight joke man.
@Gapeach30: same situation! I filed a few days after you so iām guessing itāll be soon for us, iām almost at the 10 week mark š sending peace and positivity back!
Today I contacted the TA line once again. I wanted to confirm that the supporting documents I uploaded last week were received and applied to an examiner for our review. I was transferred to a very rude and condescending gentleman who told me there was no such method of sending documentation to the IRS and I obviously did not understand nor comprehend how and where to mail documents as āthe lettersā instruct me to do. I explained our situation once more, he said maāam, you are mistaken and misinformed. You do not need to continue with your useless methods just do as I tell you and wait the eight to fourteen weeks for your review! I lost it!! I have called and called, with no direct answers.
Today we received two more CP05 letters which was the basis for my call. It turns out our issue was an error from 2021. A 1099 was filed and required a 1096 form attached which was filed and mailed out certified in 2021⦠our 2022 refund is being held until it is rectified. My question⦠why could one of the 17 agents I have spoken with not simply say āYou need to copy and mail out the 1096 and also the 1099 form you have that was already submitted to us as we did not receive it..ā. My frustration has peaked and my last nerve is shot. He told me to calm down and wait after I correct my mistakeā¦
@Diane2323: 2 to 4 months
Does anyone k =now if cashier checks from SBTPG get forwarded by Post Office?
@zhosa: yeah for the irs! Not. Just bs to be honest I wasnāt sent anything in all that time. Luckily my advocate and making that phone call to congress member got them to give a response.
@Mlronq: How I donāt know it has something to do with 501 tax exempt. I have my own business but never used the form. Maybe a glitch in the software I used.
@Gapeach30: well that falls in line with 4/3…..aren’t they geniuses?
I have a question. To get a tax advocate do I need to fill out that form on the TAS website and fax it or do i call the number?
@Gapeach30 wow a blank form? How did that even happen!!!!
Hi. I filed 01/23 accepted same day. No update or letter after path lifted. Called Irs was told to wait 2 weeks nothing changed. Called again said wait 10 weeks which would be 4/ 3. Got ta 3/9 didnāt get call until 3/17. Again no letter only 1 update last Saturday @ 11am. From blank transcript to 2022 on bottom two with as of date 04/10/2023 at the top . Wmr stuck on 1 bar no change since I filed. I reached out to my Ga congress 3/17 also. A blank form is what held up my tax return again a blank 𤬠form. Just got a call from ta that itās back in processing he will check next Tuesday to check status of deposit. For all those who are still waiting it will actually be 10 week wait it seems maybe sooner just my situation. Ta took 2 weeks to return call congress sent email Monday we spoke on last Tuesday 3/21. I know itās frustrating and Iām beyond over this tax season. But grateful to have answers and to know my refund will be released soon. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting giving some positive vibrations to all.
