key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a āqueueā and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

I need help from the wonderful people who has been there since forever(which wasssss years ago i have been on here) okay so here is my issue. My husband has always claimed the kids which hes amazing as a father im a daddys girl so i give him the most respect in the world cause hes amazing too our 2 boys 13 and 7 just wanted to give a shout out… Going off topic anyways for the past i would say since 2015 thats what the little irs said that he owes taxes on a little 1099 form i never got in the mail so i didnt claim it. Anyways since 2015 he got his taxes no no problem at all so I kept failing his taxes every year like I normally do and 2020 he was supposed to get the child care credit like everyone was supposed to and the stimulus checks.. well he didn’t so I had to amend his taxes like the lady on the phone from the IRS told me to do and filed everything that he was supposed to do so he never got his 2020 taxes at all still waiting on them still to this day so fastword it’s 2023 I go and file his taxes for 2022 now he finally gets his taxes which I was claiming the kids beforehand 2019 and 2021 because of the situation we didn’t want to have to deal with a delay but the IRS is now saying he was supposed to get way more than what he was supposed to get now he’s getting half of what he’s supposed to get and I don’t understand how that’s fair when I got a letter in the mail in oct.20222 stating that they owed him $50 in interest fees that we are paying on his taxes so how is he owing almost half of his refund now
Was audited on 1/27, refund froze on 2/13 and requested info. Sent info in the same day via online upload. Refund unfroze 2/13, received a notice on 3/6 refund due and will be issued within 2 to 3 weeks by check. As of date is 03/13. Transcript still shows a refund due in X amount and still no 846 code.
I got a letter 12C. I’ve sent in the needed info. How much will this slow up the processing and my refund?
Hey friends! Has anyone gotten their state refund in Alabama? Does anyone know how to find out the tea other than where my refund? Appreciate any help!!!
I learned from watching this forum and others in the past if you want any movement you either have to get a tax advocate or you have to contact your local congressman. He or she can help you get your refund. Itās free and simple process at this point you donāt have nothing to loose. Here in Atlanta where I live we have a group of people who show you how to break even and save money as you go so you donāt have to worry about these tax issues. Fyi
You know whats gonna be next for these 570s… they will blame the storms in the south for furthering the delay.. wouldn’t put it past them.
Well finally got a letter on Sat letter 4883C I will call the number in the morning to ID verify. I dont know why this year I have to all of the sudden,
Well I decided to look at my transcript to see what the hell is going on. Filed 2/18 annnnnd nothing. Says the irs hasnāt even gotten to my return yet.. so i guess Iāll be waiting for awhile.
@nzxo: That’s exactly what happened to me. I’m still waiting.
@Meme: Very welcome. š
@BBkansas24: in the past, whatever code it followed has been the credit they’re looking at but the last few years, it doesn’t seem to matter.
@Sheila_33, thank you for your response : )
@Dirtydog218, (hand up here!)
@ Dirtydog218 lollll emotional distress!!! Iām right there with ya.
Echoooooooooooooo. ššš. Omg Iām loosing my mind. I wonder if I can sue the irs for emotional distress
Iāll update my tax situation while on here. Filed 2/18. Accepted same day. No letters nor any instructions on WMR to contact the irs. I call the irs and all I was told is that Iām still in processing. No movement on WMR or nothing.
@BBkansas24: at this point, who knows⦠everything is so screwed up. Some people in here filed Jan 28 and still havenāt got nothing. Itās definitely a waiting game at this point. If you havenāt gotten any letters in the mail, a tax topic on WMR informing you to call the irs, then your probably going to be playing the waiting game.
Does it mean anything if the 570 code is before my 768 code. As of date is 4.3.2023
Who still hasnāt got shit, raise your hand šš»āāļø
What does it mean when my state taxes say – Under review
@Meme: Processed means its cycled thru the system once. Now whatever is holding it has to be lifted, cycle thru again and post the 846 refund code.
@HiImDory: 424 means your return is under audit/review. Iām in the same boat. That date is the day your letter is mailed telling you what u need. For me they needed proof my kids belong to me and lived with me all year I had to get school transcripts stuff from doc office birth certificates and they also wanted my proof of income cuz Iām self employed. Itās all legit I wish they would hurry up. Iāve done all that 3/06 and nothing yet it said I believe give 30 days but could take 120 which is bs š but ya 424 means ur being audited
@meme correction ** asking me FOR something else lol
@meme
Yes and itās a lot of us who filed end of January I think they just forgot about us lol I thought about going amend it just to see movement. I hate to wait another month just to get some new letter asking me die something else and to wait another 60 days
@Mlronq, the review is what’s taking sssoooo long.
@sgorham29: Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m on the fence about a tax advocate. Filed & accepted 2/7 no transcripts, no letters, 1 bar. Told to wait 10 weeks. So we’ll see what happens then.
@Mymoneynow: Thank you for your response. This gives me some insight. Hope this comes to an end soon for all.
@meme if the 570 has no amount it just means theyāre reviewing your return & itās a hold. If it would change to a positive amount they adjusted the amount of your refund.
@nzxo, I am researching these codes all day long. To my understanding (btw I have a code 570 also), when there is a $0 on same line as code 570, it means the issue is already resolved and you’re just waiting on the refund to be released.
You know some irs workers come on here reading these comments, and talking mad shit about us lol thatās probably why we aināt got shit lol š
@HUSTLE MOM: Iāve heard that it can means your return is still being processed, and the refund date is not yet available.
Nothing!!! No updates, no codes, annnnnnd yes nothing. Been on here since January. I feel like weāre the last ones a war lol. Everyone else is gone. But what ever⦠only can find humor in it at this point. Maybe next week!
ANY LATE FILERS LIKE MYSELF HEEEELP
OK MY BARS ON WHERES MY REFUND IS NOT THERE DOES ANYONE KNOW WAHT TAHT MEANS
@Sheila_33, can you clarify something for me please? What does it mean when the rep tells me that my tax return has already been processed, it’s just waiting for my tax refund to be released? What does it take to be released when they say it’s already been processed? Thank you in advance.
No updates for me on transcript or WMR. It’s been weeks since last time I received an update. My last 2 digits on my cycle code is 03, though it seems the updates i did receive always happen on Saturdays. Shouldn’t I be updating on Tuesdays? Any input from anyone would be appreciated. Hang in there everyone!
@So Stressed: waiting on 2021 amended return. It’s been over a year. Had an advocate since November. She doesn’t give updates so I have to call her for her to give me another 30 days. Called local congressman as of last week and they are looking into it.
One thing I find very odd, and that is if they are late giving you your refund they pay you a pittance of interest and then they require you add it as income so they can tax you on it, but if you owe and are late paying them the interest rate and daily calculation seems to be much higher than the one they use when they pay you! Seems kinda slanted to me!
@So Stressed I have used a tax advocate and honestly I really can’t say whether they made the process any quicker! The too also tell you they will check back in with you in a few weeks, I started with mine and 2 1/2 months later I finally got my refund. Although that may just have been my experience. I will say they were very nice and I guess I felt better that someone was working towards a solution for me. I am pretty sure it all depends on which Advocate is assigned to you.
Does a tax advocate really help speed things up? Can anyone share their experience if they’re using one or have used one?
