key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

No update on WMR or transcript, filed 2/10 accepted same day, no movement at all on WMR beside delayed return message for a couple of weeks now. Only thing positive is wage reported on SSA website. I guess it’s making some movement. As of date on transcript was still 3/6.
@MOE
not me. I’m a weekly so won’t update til Friday….HOPEFULLY!
Has anyone update on transcripts today ?
Never mind I found them :D
I swear this website gets more attention than facebook. Maybe we will see something friday.
What happened to the forums?
@ MamaHen0717
Hopefully they’re right and you don’t need to do anything on your end. I guess it’s good news if it was resequenced, I hope you get an update on Friday!! Fingers crossed!
@ MamaHen0717
It really is so frustrating. It’s like ok y’all want us to wait but if you can just tell me what’s holding the return up I can give you the information you need and get things moving again. Thankfully I was able to reach someone who told me the notice was requesting proof of income or w2 so I submitted it, because if I had waited for the notice like the first rep told me to I would STILL be clueless and waiting for a notice. Maybe I’ll get it today. Idk. but I’m honestly tired of waiting.
@Mlronq: I called back on Friday to attempt again and was told that it was nothing on my end to be done, I was resequenced. Our return lacked info and had to wait until the system updates… I have almost hit frustration. I called a TA and left a message. When I received a call back I was told to wait until the 20th to see what happens with this weeks update and call back the following Monday.
@Mlronq: I called last Thursday and was told they seen nothing about a notice and we needed to be patient and wait until we hit the 30 day mark… she considered 30 days from March 2, 2023 when we hit the master file for processing. My patience at this point is thinning.
My dad made the comment to me the other day that the federal government probably gave too much money to Ukraine and is trying to play damage control by dipping into our refunds and they are trying to act like its a staffing issue.. I wouldnt put it past them but who knows.. not much on that conspiracy but then again is it? who even knows these days?
I filed January.. have 570 code … No letter .. no nothing .. what’s my next step
@jas
Me either, but previous years it’s never taken longer than the 21 day timeframe to issue my refund. They’re having some major issues and delays. Stressing me!
@Mlronq: Oh wow! I never even seen this message before .
@ MamaHen0717
My 971 is dated 3/13 and I still haven’t gotten the notice. Did you call to find out what your notice was about? I’d recommend doing so. I filed over 6 weeks ago
@Di: Makes no sense.. im watching that as of date. just hope it doesnt go up 7 more days.. i dont know why im hoping this because it probably means nothing..
I checked last night, my SSA finally has wages showing for 2022. Wage report on the transcript is still empty. Dates have stayed the same since 3/3. We are the dreaded weekly cycle code 20230905.
Also, we have an “as of” 3/27/23.
570 says 3/20/23 and 971 says 3/27/23.
We filed 2/13, accepted 2/15, hit the master file on 3/2.
Our 21 days have come and gone.
I called in last Friday and was told to wait it out, if the IRS needs anything more from us they’ll let us know. The 21 day turn around is an average and not a guarantee or promise. The agent told me to be patient
@Sheila_33
Thank you! It hasn’t snapped back yet only pushed out so hopefully it’s good news. The date on the 150 return filed says 3/6 so maybe I’ll get a more informative update Friday! I assumed the 3/13 on 971 meant that’s when I’d receive the letter maybe the person I talked to yesterday was just confused lol I’ve never been placed on hold that much, usually they place me on that first 5-7 min hold and then answer my questions. It seems that if they can’t find the answers in their “scripted responses” they just come up with something to get you off the phone lol
i was accepted feb 20… have had no bars no dddor transcripts .
same status, name address for 40 years.
i thought i had fell through the cracks. no info whatsoever on return.
my Usps informed delivery shows a CHECK arriving today from IRS…
what in the world is going on here?
just out of the blue ?
i always request direct deposit.
so those of you with absolutely no info on your refund…. take heart….
it’s a strange tax year.
@jas
Yes mine has said the same thing since mid feb! Still no movement :(
@NVDIV: still the same for me.
Goodmorning all woke up to this message on WMR “We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information regarding your refund. We understand your tax refund is very important and we are working to process your return as quickly as possible. “ anyone else ?
@NVDIV: me too. 60 day delay letter. Nothing else
@Mironq: In the past, the date beside the code is when they want it to you by or around that time. That date pushing out and sticking is possibly a good thing since it means the system is allowing itself extra time to resolve.
Has ANYONE who filed jointly on 1/28 with 3 dependants and a 570 since mid Feb had any progression? The only letters ive been getting in the mail are the transcripts that I keep ordering in the mail. I do that to test the waters to make sure they are actually sending my mail correctly. Just haven’t received any verify letter, only a delay letter but my code never changed from 570 and its been 3 weeks now since that letter. No letter sent code or anything
@zhosa: Hopefully this will be over soon.
@BBkansas24: It means the IRS has pulled your return for review but it is not an audit. They are verifying the information reported on your tax return and matching documents they received from payers such as employers, banks, etc.
Can somebody explain the 4644C letter?
After no movement I received mine in the mail.. advocate who works for the IRS stated that wasn’t an audit letter like others said. It just means they received my return and are working on it.. I don’t have to do anything. I really don’t wanna wait 60 days my supposed ddd from TT said 3.18.
Any knowledge would be helpful.
Thanks!
Called the IRS today.
My 12C notice that I replied to on (02/02) was closed and given the all clear as of 03/06.
Last issue is it is inside the IRS ‘Errors Department’, which I was told to allow up-to 10 weeks from the time the IRS acknowledged the return which was (01/19).
I’ve got an advocate through my senator’s office, so hopefully it’s speeding everything up. Wish me luck!
I just called them again…she placed me on hold 3 times to research my acct. then she said you’re getting a notice, it was mailed out today. Please wait 120 days while they finish reviewing your return. But I thought it was already mailed out according to the person I spoke with last week?!?..
I’m livid.
I get different information from everyone I speak to. I’ve had a 971 notice issued code on my account for 3 weeks. One of y’all please tell me it’s gonna be alright bc I. AM. TIRED. brb..going count my change for my shopping spree at dollar tree.
Does anyone know why a “as of date” will change I had a set date of 3/20 then it changed to 3/27 now it’s back at 3/20. Any answer helps thanks
570.. No update.. No other code.. Figured there would be a letter by now since its been 2 months.. But my transcripts keep getting here every 2 days with no problem.. What is the holdup lol
I have 150 code, also 570 but no 971. Does anyone else share this affliction?
@Mlronq: It’s probably the same letter I got. If they would have told me pay stubs instead of w2s three weeks ago I could have uploaded that. Now I’m basically starting over time wise. I’m also a weekly processor and I believe tomorrow is the cutoff for submitting information so I’ll do it some time this week.
@Sharon. O
Exactly!!! & I already uploaded my w2 probably about 2 weeks ago. I had to call to find out that’s why my refund is on hold and whenever I asked why it’s still on hold after uploading the w2 they just tell me I have to wait for the notice to see if they might’ve possibly requested any other specific documents. I said well is there an estimated date that I’m supposed to receive it because it’s been weeks! & the lady I spoke to on 3/6 said “you should have it by Friday” well it’s now Monday and I still don’t have a notice so I’m not sure if they need anything else from me but I wish I knew because I don’t want it to be delayed further. It’s ridiculous that they can’t give you any useful information over the phone.
@Mlronq: This happened to me 3 years ago and I was just able to send in my w2. It also says if you don’t have that you can get your employer to write something out on company letter head. They are very vague with that one. It is honestly an extra hastle to delay things even longer
@Sharon.O
I wonder what happens if you don’t have check stubs. Because I don’t :(
Ugh!!!! I’ve been waiting weeeeeks for a notice. I hope I see something today, my mailman hasn’t passed yet. This is so frustrating.
@DredPirate: Same exact situation. Three weeks ago when I got the 570 I called and was told I would be receiving a letter which I received today. I was told to submit my w2 because they needed to verify my income. I did that. Now I also have to send copies of paystubs.
filed 1/29/23 accepted 1/30/23 filed using tax slayer got 152, 970, codes never received in 20 years filing taxes today 3/13/23 received letter from irs via irs website in my messages saying i needed to send 4 paystubs to verify never had to do this or have heard of anyone having to do so, i thought normal procedure would be to provide w2 however this is no problem just sharing my experience and making others who have yet to recieve a refund aware of the obstacles the irs has made this year that ive never been aware of good luck to all and will repost upon receiving a DDD date
The irs made an adjustment to my tax return of an additional $54 so I got codes 971 and 571 and I called today and was told that the hold wouldn’t be lifted until 7 day after my as of date which is March 27th on wmr my amount disappeared and my tt152 came back does anyone have any insight on my situation
