key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

Just wanted to post my situation
Filed and accepted 2/6/23
WMR changed to being processed to still being processed and lost my amount on 3/2/23.
Transcript N/A until today, got 846 for 3/15/23.
No notices sent, no id verify
570 code?? Should I worry?
Just ID verified in the office this past Wednesday
Transcripts were NA since 1/23
Updated last night.
I know 570 can mean so many things. Is there a way to tell if it will clear up or if I’m awaiting a letter 😑 lol
My transcript updated today it says refund issued but no code 846 it says code 840 and a date of 03/07/23
Will transcripts continue to update through tomorrow?
@Sheila_33: I left a message earlier but forgot to put the 33.
Question for Sheila_33 when the As of date doesn’t stick does that mean they really aren’t working on my taxes?
Well my bubble is busted!! As of date reverted from Mar 20 back to Feb 20! Well if it is moving back and forth they must be trying to do something and after no movement for almost 2 months I will take it!!
@570 Go Away: No update for me as well.. It’s like taxation without representation.. Ain’t that one of the reason everyone left Europe back in the day?
Finally transcripts are completed. Cycle code is 20231005. Don’t know what that means. Any insight?
Still blank here since 01/19
As-Of went to 03/13-03/20-03/27 now back to 03/13 with no updates.
@Mlronq: lol. It was N/A until today. I had to do ID verify last week. First time ever going through it so just checking if anyone was familiar with the process
@Sheila_33: I don’t know what’s going on with the irs but I just got my taxes on my netspend card . I tried to log on the see transcript’s but I kept saying technical difficulties. Something said for me to check account and sure enough it was there …whew what a relief 😅 ! Thanks for being here with me though this bumpy ride. oxoxox
Since this morning, all of the transcripts said N/A except one. Now another one shows 2022, but they’re both blank. The other 2 still say N/A. I guess I’ll check back tomorrow and see what’s up.
I just checked transcript and I see a 570 only (outside of 806 and 150 codes)
I just verified ID at the IRS building last week.
Is something wrong? Or is the 570 normal to see after having to verify?
Mind you this whole time my transcripts been N/A until I verified ID at IRS office
FILED JANUARY 23
@Sheila_33: lol I guess they are taking their time . 🤦🏽♀️
@rocky
It’s a pain in the a** that’s what it is 🤣🤣
My as of date also changed to 3/27 which is 21 days from the 3/6 processing date so maybe they put us back into processing yall! If that’s the case I’d expect to see some movement next week! Praying. I am struggling. It’s been one thing after the next.
My account transcript for 2022 is on there.. with all the information from my tax return but no codes?
What is it if you get a 971 and 570 code on your return transcripts?
I’ve filed and accepted 2/1 the same day. Went from received return and a week later to “still” processing for weeks. N/A on account transcripts. Didnt get a id verify letter til 3/2 and verified online same day. I still decided to call to verify as well on Monday 2/6. I checked this morning and there was finally movement on Account transcript few hours later To my surpise i received a direct deposit to my Bluebird account a few minutes ago. So i checked my account transcript and it now has the 846 code and direct deposit date of 3/15.
@Sheila: filed taxes 1/29.I was sent a 12c letter faxed the information over Feb 13. How long before I can get back to processing again or how does that work? At first it said my refund is being processed and now it says it’s still being processed. Is that a good thing? They are telling me could take up to 10 weeks.
My Account and my Wage & Income for 2022 have been showing but says no tax return filed. My as of date on my Account transcript is 3/27. As previously stated, I ID verified on 3/2. At this point, I will just impatiently wait in the IRS to decide when deserve my funds despite them coming soon would really come in handy.
I have been coming here basically since this site first started and always appreciate the information shared. I checked my transcripts this morning. My return transcript and record of account transcript had all my 2022 return information around 7 AM (central time) this morning but my account transcript still showed no return filed. I checked again at 9 AM and it was still the same, no return filed. About an hour ago, it updated and has the 846 code. So glad this year went smoothly, last year was a nightmare! The tax software I used miscalculated my son’s education credit supposedly (I still debate this issue) and I had to wait several weeks before it finally was corrected. I never got a letter prior to it getting fixed but did get one several weeks later asking if I wanted to dispute it. Hope everyone gets to see theirs go through soon! I just got my text that bluebird deposited my funds!!!
@Call me Caroline: usually the “as of” date is the date by which you should receive the letter. Maybe Sheila can confirm this or not, but an agent told me that when you request another letter it takes preference over the other one. That seems true for me because my as of was 3/6 until i requested a new letter and my date did push out to 3/20 soon after requesting it. Now i did finally get the letter on 3/6 though and it took about 2-3 weeks to receive it.
@570 Go Away: If that date sticks, and it doesn’t snap back, then its possible they’ve got you back in que to finish up.
@Starr: I expected to see an 846 for you today. They sure are taking their own sweet time. Happy to see you got an advocate, sometimes they can get things moving quicker.
Having read this I thought it was really informative. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to put this information together. I once again find myself spending a significant amount of time both reading and posting comments. But so what, it was still worthwhile!
Today makes 28 days. I just looked at our transcript and the 971 code with notice date 3/27 is now there.
I am going to call now… I had hoped it would be released by now.
No update or movement for me today. My as of date did change from 03/20/2023 to 03/27/202does anyone have a idea why this may happen ?
@Kikibroke: yeh I never received a letter or nothing i verified myself on irs website but been stuck on same position since 2/3 when I filed and accepted the same day
@Boston girl: same for me. Just checked and account is updated with 846
Well if a little after 9am here in CA and my “as of date” just changed from 3/6-3/27. Only thing that has moved in nearly a month now. My 150 still shows 3-6 and the 570 code still shows 3-6. If this isn’t the most irritating year I don’t know!
@Meme: mine still sitting there at 3/6. Absolutely no movement for weeks now, 4 I think. Filed later January.
My has of date is 3/13 been like that for 2 weeks does that mean anything
@TPerry: I filed 3/1 accepted same day transcripts updated this morning but not account
@Ken: mine said this and still does. Just received a letter yesterday to verify identity
@Sheila_33: good morning Starr here 😊….my transcripts didn’t change today. I Still have the 971/570 codes . Thought I was going to get the 571/ 846 today but no 😢. I did talk to my advocate and he said that I will update either Wednesday or Friday of this week coming. I had to go through the whole cycle again I guess the 21 day thing 🤷🏽♀️but he assured me that I will be updated this week coming. I’m assuming Friday coming is when I’ll update because I’m a weekly my as of date is 3/20 and the dates next to my 971/570 is 3/20 also. I’m so tired of the wait ! 🥺😤🤯
Return transcript updated this morning but Account is N/A. Never happened before. Anyone else?
A long time lurker here. Been coming to this site for years, and always get my refund with no issues. Always get transcripts updated on friday and within 2 weeks of filing. This year filed 2/14 and i’m still N/A on all transcripts except wage(that says no return filed). No letters, no i’d verify needed(tried already) nothing. Also, this is a very strange day because from this page and from the facebook page it seems no one got a ddd this morning. Not sure what’s going on this year but there’s definitely a slower processing time. Another week of waiting i guess.
@sgorham29: That date moving out and sticking is definitely a positive. :)
