Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

For those stuck with N/A it can take 2 to 4 weeks before we even start processing. Last year I filed when it opened and didn’t get money till First week of March. This year I filed 2/1 and got N/A again. I am path and weekly. I believe for some of us we don’t process till after path lift and it makes sense now. I didn’t have to do anything last year but wait. I’m barely at 20 days now so this week I hope is my turn. No way we all have the same tax issues path or no path. They said most will get money by Feb 28th with path if all is good.

@Me: yah they are crazy this year I called Friday and the lady lied to me saying earned income was extended till the 22nd as of 3 weeks ago and told me she can’t even look at my account till then she also told me my 810 refund freeze was cuz of that which it isn’t lol ! They are lying . I’ve seen some people say that they call one person and get that kinda stuff and call back and get another that looks into it so call back ! I plan on calling today but my informed mail shows me the mail I have coming for the day and there is one that says you have mail from someone we don’t have an image for and I’m hoping that’s my irs letter lol so I’m going to be Patient and see if I get that first lol like u I’ve never had a review happen before never had any issue so I hate it . I’ve been audited before but that was years later after a refund but never a freeze and review and it seems like a ton of people this year are having stuff like this

Ugh.. it’s been 4 long weeks. Filed early through TurboTax, accepted 1/23/23. Married filing jointly, 05er, EITC, ACTC, PATH. 2023 transcript is still N/A. WMR, still no bars (haven’t seen a bar yet this year), “Refund is still being processed.” B.S.. Same DD bank info as last year, but no DD in sight. No letter in the mail. Will wait until 2/23/23 to call IRS. Oh, and still no AZ refund or transcripts either, they’re “Taking longer than usual to prevent ID theft/fraud.” And I’ve verified on IDverify. I feel my wife and I have held our composure well, but this is starting to drive us mad.

Anyone else in the same boat?

@MOE: just about everyone that filed a NY state return was getting the review status up until last night it updated . They follow suit with federal for the path act so everyone was getting the review message . If you end up with an audit for federal NY will follow in line state audit .

@Curious: depends on your bank. When republic shows funded they have already sent your deposit to your bank so it just has to pass back through the clearinghouse and then your bank receives and makes it available per their ACH terms. Some banks make ACH immediately available while others will wait till the designated DDD.

They have to know what it means. Should I call back and try to get someone else who will help me. I’ve never had this happen is 25 yrs and I’m super stressed and can’t get any answers. I ask her if the system will fix it’s self she acted like I didn’t know what I was talking about and had a attitude

@NY-Khidd: You maybe right with some cases . This will be the third year in a row they have accepted my return then placed it on review. Last year they couldn’t find it for a week then was in review then audit. I’ve been filing with the same status kids and job for 8 years. Checked after acceptance this year I’m in review again, I refuse to look anymore I’ll just wait for a letter. Smh lol
