Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a ā€œqueueā€ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

IRS Update Cycle

Use the IRS Update Cycle chart to find the days and times the WMR and transcript update.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Just want to be honest here, iIf you got the advance, or took fees out, and going thru SBTPG, you will not see a deposit until the day before, if it’s a business day. So if you got the 23rd (Monday), you will see it that day. If you got the 24th (Tuesday), you will see it the 23rd (Monday).

SBTPG is not going to process tomorrow.

Quick question for anybody else who called Sbtpg… when I first called it gave me my advance amount then refund amount… but me being me I called again ( ocd) and it didn’t tell me my refund amount at all. Just curious if it’s done anyone else that way.

    Thanks

I can’t help but comment on the shit I see spewing all day.

Plumbing knowledge of ACH absolutely feeds the grapevine.
    That part is real.

But the grapevine stops short of outcomes.

The moment someone starts speaking for Treasury, for banks, or for cash in your actual account, it’s no longer a nugget of information — it’s overreach.

Knowing how the pipes work isn’t the same as knowing when the water turns on.

Plenty of people understand ACH flow, bank processing windows, and internal mechanics. That knowledge isn’t rare or groundbreaking. What matters is confirmation.

    Plumbing knowledge fuels the grapevine.
    Outcomes come from verification.

    We don’t skip that step.

Ok, refund in navy FCU is pending. Is there a thread/forum for banks? I remember there used to be one years ago, but I do not see it. If my DDD is 2/25 (assumption cause it has not updated yet and this is the date that is pending on my bank account), will NFCU wait until then to release it? They always wait until 9p-11p the night before to release my payroll. What about Wells Fargo? Nothing pending, but usually release my payroll two days before. Wondering if they are with the holding, too. Please let me know iyk, The longest wait is over.
To simplify, what banks are HOLD banks and what are the NO HOLD banks?
Speedy returns and DD to all !!

    • I Got My Refund!

@Cerby: paying fees upfront and depositing to a NHB is always the fastest way to get your return.

It’s possible some paid fees out of refund and got it same time as paid upfront but that would be rare.

Knowing that, every year I still need to deal with paying out of refund though lol

@Sheila_33: hey Sheila, I’m the one who put the wrong EIN for my employer (outdated EIN) but wages and everything else matches what’s on my wage transcripts. The only update I saw overnight on my blank transcripts was my as of date changed from 3/2 to 3/9. Is it a good sign it was only pushed out one week? Or is that just normal timeframe to be pushed out since it hasn’t processed.? I can’t remember from prior years if they would push out longer if something was wrong. Still no letters or codes indicating something is wrong. Thank you!

@Ichigo435: NO, the 9th is not your DDD that is the date it has to get to you by. Your DDD will be in WMR tomorrow. If you had fees taken out your money will go in on the day the WMR date or the day before. So if WMR says 24th, it will be the 23rd or 24th.

@Morris: are you using a traditional bank or no hold bank? A lot of times that makes all the difference. I know with my bank I have received payroll deposits as late as 9pm est. It seems this year it didn’t really matter if you paid fees upfront or not bc some are depositing same day regardless

@Simple: Really…??? I didnt think you could go back and change banking info for deposit after the return is submitted. I filed thru turbo tax and fees paid out of refund and the 5 day early fee. So I should go thru what to change bank deposit info?

@Silentwatcher26: lol yes, please keep us updated…I’m really rooting for you! Your WMR will definitely tell you more in the morning, but keep checking and calling SBTPG too. The only thing that updated on the site for me, was seeing that my advance had actually been paid in that ā€˜advance repayment’ tab – literally nothing else updated, I’m still showing unfunded lol. But at least seeing that your advance has been paid, means they received your refund from the IRS. So at the very least, that will tell you something šŸ˜ŠšŸ¤žšŸ¼

@Sheila_33: no, I did not receive it tonight despite the claim that if you updated last night between that magical 1 hour and 1 minute it was already sent to the various Banks Etc. I even messaged my bank earlier today to notify them of the amount and that it would be arriving soon and they assured me that they are a no holds Bank and it would appear in my account when they can see it on their end.

@Mavrik: 846 means it or at least part of it was released. Chime is having no issues. Hopefully soon. Did you pay your fees up front or file free? If you paid from your return it will be the day of you DDD MAYBE the day before.

@2blessed: They do not, but some banks will recieve last batch on a Friday night and credit to you on a Saturday, but that is their internal structure. ACH does not process on the weekends.
