key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.
Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

I hope everyone is having an amazing day just wanted to drop in and share a little something interesting. Maybe take your mind off the waiting game 🙂
I tried the viral dill pickle dip and I must say it’s pretty delicious. I added a couple of things so if you’re interested just let me know and I’ll drop the recipe 😌
@ChristinePFla: It’s very possible that they can reconcile that internally and fix that issue. At this point though, it may be a wait and see what happens this week. You may be an easy fix and you just update with everyone else. Fingers crossed.
@Another year: really? It’s a federal holiday so I’m under the impression the Treasury doesn’t open back up until around 9 tonight. I personally decided against CA this year bc in the last 3 or more years they held my deposit as pending. I’m a weekly so they receive my taxes on Fridays early afternoon but don’t release them to me until Tuesday nights…day before actual ddd.
Hey long time lurker. I am one of the ones with blank account transcripts with as of date 3/2 on path. Wage transcripts are updated, but nothing else available and INFO beside year 2025. I just found out I used the wrong EIN for one of my employers. What happens now?
@MzB81: You got your refund already? When did you get it? My tax transcript shows the same as you, my as of date says 3/2/26 but my processing date says 2/23/26. I went through excessive fee charging H&R Block :/ I haven’t received mine yet.
@Mama3girls: If it says you’ve been received and processing, then you’ve been accepted and you’re in the system, just waiting for an update.
@Sheila_33: my doesn’t show anything about being accepted just received and processing. Is there a code ? I filed jan 13
@Mama3girls: You can go to Irs.gov/where’s my refund and check your status there to see if you’ve been accepted by the IRS.
How do you know if your been accepted?
Has anyone noticed their account information change on the IRS website? Mine updated this morning and shows I don’t owe them anything.
All transcripts have been available for me almost as soon as I filed 1/26
As of date and processing dates are both 2/16-2026 and have not changed at all.
PATH needs to lift already lol
@Vontane: 0701 is a daily. And its very possible you may process tomorrow and update on transcripts late evening/Wednesday morning with a refund date of 2/23.
@El mariguas: just out of curiosity, Why so many prepaid cards? Which one to you is better?
@ASDMamaBear: Serve is also a Green Dot network user, even though it’s American Express. You load under green dot.
@Sheila_33: And yes im a pather
@Sheila_33 My Cycle Code # is 0701 what specificly does the different # codes mean? (Sorry for the late response 🙃)
Usually my black azz gets happy around 11 am Central or 4pm because that’s when it usually hits. I will never pay a tax company to do something I can for free for myself. Even with the stocks I have I’m more knowledgeable than these so called tax advocates here in Louisiana. People are so dumb down here lol.
@ASDMamaBear: The card is serve card my is the same thing I filed with JH as well The card you used with your advance is the card the refund will go to which will show up on SBTPG I’m using the same serve card as last year in other words no worries 🙂
@Tennessee: Because all my credits/withholdings have populated on it.
@Tennessee: it shows what’s been advanced when I log in and my jh fees etc.
@ASDMamaBear: how did you see your advance loan ?
So i just noticed something weird. I filed with JH and have their serve card. When logging into Santa Barbara it shows my advances and says my refund will be disbursed onto my green dot card. It also says my refund advances were funded onto my green dot card. I DONT HAVE A GREEN DOT CARD. JH uses Serve and that’s how I received my advances and how I’m supposed to receive my refund. Anyone else?
@Almosttomyrefund2026: yes, I didn’t believe it either until I saw it
@ErisedMai: how do you its already been processed?
@Another year: on a holiday?
@Another year: maybe so….in my job I have 4 cards money goes to..and its chime, varo, cash app and current…fastest are current, varo, cash app chime..last pay pal another one I have..in that order money hits .so cash app is fast..
@Tennessee: Not likely. My wage transcripts are completely blank, and I got my W2 on the 3rd of January. My refund is already processed just waiting on path to lift.
@ErisedMai: does the irs have all the w2 by now?
