key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.
Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

@Sheila_33: yes ma’am they are all the same.
@Sheila_33: last year it took 10 days from filing to refund in my bank Bank of America
Will i be put on hold if my wage information doesn’t match my w2?
If I received an advance on a serve card when I filed and was accepted with Jackson Hewitt does that mean my refund is going to that card?
@Momof2girls1boy77: Definitely possible, i saw a few who ID verified update the next week!
I’m hoping that I update this week. I filed on 1/16. Accepted on 1/20. Transcripts are all zeros. Id verified last Monday. Still have as of date 2/16/26. I can now see my previous year info but before it was only 2021. Now I see them all. Only have my wage and income transcript and my account transcript. Does anyone think I will update this week
@Nelson35: Kind of depends this week on when you post.
@Shdavis46: That reference code is usually because a social security number was incorrectly entered on the filed return. Have you checked those numbers on the return for dependents and are they correct?
@OLTFREEFILER: thank you, I was taught it to be shot The boys and I was born in 1968 so that was quite a while ago .and I did forget the ending so thank you for that too I knew there was a little bit more to it but I could never remember it. Thank you for your response. This form used to be a little funnier and nicer To talk to other people. But people seem to be too serious this year so have a good day thank you. Enjoy your refund when you get it. Don’t spend it all on bills do something fun?
@Sheila_33: Good morning, Do you think that its possible I will see some movement this week? Filed and accepted 01/28/26. WMR initially said that my tax refund had been received and is being processed. Well, last Saturday WMR stated refund status unavailable. No movement on transcripts, just account transcript 2 Fridays ago with all Zeros. I am a weekly, still have a 1-23-26 processing date. I notice Saturday that I had reference code 9001 on WMR. It it like my return is lost out there!!! 😊
So I just filed on Saturday the 14th when should my transcript update last year I had 04 on my transcripts also it says my refund was issued 3-10-2025 but I got it 2-25-2025 idk much about this stuff
So glad this path waiting is almost over!!
@Sheila_33: thank you
@Suzy27: You may just be waiting for the next update to finish processing this week since you’ve only been in the system for 9 days. The pattern seems to be going that way this year.
@Sheila_33: thanks! Yes I’m a pather
@Sheila_33: Thank you for the info
@Sheila_33: I was accepted 2/6. Wage transcript showing my w-2. Nothing else.
I can’t wait to see the 846 celebration this year! Only a few hours away ppl! Good luck and happy refunding for everyone! Even though I’m a weekly lol!
@Just_curious: Are you waiting for the path freeze to lift from your transcript? If so, anyone that is a daily will see that freeze lifting tomorrow regardless of their cycle code. It is not a good indicator of when you’ll get your refund under the path freeze.
Hi I’ve been reading about cycle codes but I’m still not sure I understand. My cycle code is 20260601. I understand that’s when I posted to the master files, but does this help me time figure out my timing for my direct deposit date or when I’ll update with 846 code possibly? My transcripts are all filled out with good codes. Previously I’ve always been a weekly up it looks like I’m daily this year which is cool!
@4timemom: If you’re being held by the path freeze, with all good codes, you’ll most likely see a refund date of the 23rd on your Wmr Thursday morning but weeklies with that same processing date will see their refund dates for the 25th. That date of the 23rd is 3 cycles out from the date you first posted to the transcript.
I am 0503. My as of date is 2/16 and processing date is 2/23. Does that mean I will get a ddd this week or not until the 23rd?
@Brandy: Everything starts tomorrow because if it being a holiday.
@lostttttt: You really won’t be sure until the next transcript update. This year, a lot of dates moving on transcripts etc. and I can’t give you a confident answer.
