Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

I have a question, if you choose the 5 days early option through TurboTax, how soon will you actually get your money if you have fees taken out of refund? I know they use cross river bank for the 5 days early option. Anyone experience any issues with the 5 days early option or is this ok to use?

Iv been reading the chats for 2 weeks now lol im going to chime in myself. So I filed 1/12/26 was accepted 1/16/26. I also have the transcripts showing 0000 previous years Iv also had my refund before the month of February. All I can say is stay calm this is normal. For the last 10years it’s been that way and this year is deff different. Not a bad ratio can’t be 100% all the time! Just breathe and trust the process it will come!

Also if fees are taken from refund for turbo tax, can we still lookup on SBTPG? Or is it another bank now? Cuz my info for last year or this year doesn’t pop up…

I filed 1/16 at 10pm. Accepted 1/20 at 2pm. Prev transcripts say I’m an 05 weekly. Still only have 1 bar, and transcripts for 2025 show for account and wage but are 00.00 out. I usually get my deposit 1/30. I haven’t had any movement. Anyone else in the same boat? Were we resequenced? When do weekly’s post deposits? What should I look out for? Any specific dates?

So I’m never doing the 5 day early feature on Turbotax again – I read on Reddit that last year peoples funds were held up an extra week after being sent to SBBT – this is the first year Ive had any issues with my Taxes…I was accepted on the 15th and still no movement. Transcripts show zeros, and as of date 2/16 – thankfully I’m using Venmo, so once the funds hit they release them, but I will never do the 5 days early/SBBT bank again…

When in the filling process with Turbo tax do they usually offer the refund advance? If someone could let me know. Is it after I hit the submit refund? Thank you

They will flip when they flip but I don’t troll the site and pop in only once in a while, so I really was unaware the system had gone down, so now knowing that I’m all good. They will flip this week most certainly.

@wade123: Mine is also following a numerical sequence. Last week, I was wondering why my transcripts had not updated on Friday like they did the previous year when I was an O5. Upon further review, I noticed that transcripts are going in numerical order and rotating from 03 – 05 each year. So if the pattern continues, I should be 03 this year.

@wade123: You’ve been here long enough to know 05 can be a daily too, lol. And you may get to be one. I’ve never quite seen it cycle consecutively like that, but I’ve heard it can happen. Regardless if you’re daily or weekly, you only process once a week and as behind as this system got last week, that’s most likely why you haven’t updated yet. And, if you do process Thursday and update with us weeklies, we won’t judge ya for being “one of those” dailies lol.

@Sheila_33: Thanks, that makes sense. I was unaware the system went down. That’s why I had said last week I have seen my returns hit in as little as 4 days before and one user here thought I was from Mars for saying that. But I did notice this? What do you make of this? I went back and looked at my transcripts. Last year my cycle code was 04, 2023 it was 03, 2022 it was 02, 2021 it was 01, 2020 it was 05, 2019 it was 04. So, it looks like each year my cycle code changes 1 number in perfect sequence, 1,2,3,4,5, back to 1. Is this coincidence or since it has progressed like that annually can I expect to move to a 05 this year making me a weekly which is why I see no movement yet?

@Sarah D: 99.999% sure. Accepted same day Updated to the blank transcript on a 03 code day same week. To further cement it last year I updated to blank on a 01 code day then next week I updated my code was 0801. 2023 got my blank on 05 cycle was 1605. Hard to not notice the trend

So, I just noticed something odd. I went back and looked at my transcripts. Last year my cycle code was 04, 2023 it was 03, 2022 it was 02, 2021 it was 01, 2020 it was 05, 2019 it was 04. @wade123: Transcripts couldn’t even post at the beginning of last week because of the transcript system going down. Whereas, in the past years, we saw non pathers with simple returns seeing 846s on their transcripts before opening day. I think part of the problem was the system going down, and now there are so many returns that it bottlenecked. So, what I’m hoping, is everything gets lined out this week and we start seeing more transcripts filled in.

@ErisedMai: I mean if it takes 2 or 3 weeks instead of 1 like it has for 2 decades, I can live with that but at this point I don’t even have transcripts, not even blanks. And that is not normal. Once you sit in a pattern that does not change year after year because my life is so simple and boring this outlier becomes noticeably abnormal, Like I said waiting a couple weeks longer is one thing, but at least everyone else is getting blank transcripts, I got nada.

Something is afoot here with the IRS. Clean W2 with a simple 1040, no PATH, no credits, no change in status, work, address, all the same for 25 years. I am a daily, always have been. I have never waited more than a week for Federal and MN State, and yet here we are 11 days in and I don’t even transcripts. You know when something is not normal when it’s been such a predictable pattern for decades, and this is not normal.

If your transcripts have 0s and no codes, and its stating “no tax return filed”, you’re not alone. There are a lot of us in that exact same situation. We are thinking there may have been some resequencing and we just didn’t get to finish posting on the transcripts. Dailies may see some updates this week as they cycle through, and weeklies big day to cycle thru will be Thursday, with an update on transcripts Friday.

When can I expect to see movement on WMR? I did have Child tax credits. I know I won’t get the money until after mid February but when will WMR update?

@Cat: Yes your transcript can update to all codes showing credits with no 846 before path lifts. It’s also possible to not update at all until the week path lifts and update all at once to a DDD the same week.

I am so sorry, I am sure this has been asked, but haven’t found it.

This is my first year on path.

For any weeklies that are on path:

Does your Transcript update with all codes besides direct deposit before path lifts?

Once path lifts, does your transcript update on that Friday with a direct deposit date (this year it would be the 20th), or following Friday (this year the 27th)?

If it is the same Friday as path lift, is the direct deposit date usually the following week?

    Thank you in advance.
