key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Madinjay: they’re moving slowly but surely also my income wages updated shorty before the 846 came sending good vibes only 🫶🏽
@jdennis662: yes the income transcripts updated but no movement on the others!! Still waiting
So I filed I think 1/29 finally ind verified last Monday. I’ve been checking transcripts all weekend today my wage and income transcript produced but none of the others. I should be receiving a paper check soon hopefully
I filed 2/1/2025 verified 3/9/2025 still nothing ugghhh
@Notyourmom: IT normally takes two weeks after it’s been closed out
@Falysha Lynn: congratulations! I’m waiting for 3 years!!
Has anyone did the ID verification and the rep tell them that they processed on March 29, 2025 and was closed out just needed to verify? If so how long did it take for you to update with the 846?
Spoke to IRS today had the nicest rep ever assist me she let me know its a review of the amounts entered because they dont have my 1099 R from my 401k withdrawal. So thats the hold up but had I not put it on my return there would be no hold up. I did that 1 year and ended up owning so I made sure it was on there this year ugh. Now I have to wait for CP05 notice to send in a copy of my 1099R
So a quick update I filed my taxes on Jan 29th for 2022,2023,2024 the 2024 was electronically filed via tax preparer this is my first time using a tax preparer since 2018 but non the less I had to go I had to go to a professional given the fact that I tried filing myself but it keep rejecting it due to a form issue anyways I received my 2024 return via DD on 2/25/25 and I now have a DD for the other 2 returns 22,23 those were mailed in on 1/29/25 so a little over 8 weeks ugh the agony of the tax season hope all goes well for y’all
It’s been pretty quiet in here I hope that means everyone got good news! As for me no updates but hopefully by 4/7
@ShimmyShimmycocopuff: Update to post. I found out. And the answer is Yes, they take after the 846 code.
@Dollbaby127: you think your refund will come before 4/2 I gave early pay mine hasn’t hit my account yet
I received a tax topic 203 on WMR…but I also received a code 846 on my transcript with my full refund amount by it. Is it possible to have my return withheld after getting an 846 on my transcript for the full amount of the return?
Anyone have any knowledge or experience with 570 TC appearance date 3/14 and how long it takes to clear if there are no other issue codes? Return accepted 1/27. Should it take this long, especially since TAS is involved. Seems there hasn’t been much of an impact.
@Dollbaby127: that sucks. I verified on 24th and my return processed just waiting on 846 but before that was blank since 2/14. I also verified in person
@wade123: took me 4 weeks after I verified
@orianasenoj: yes had to verify march 8th got a refund date for April 2nd
Verified march 8th. Got 846 code march 28th. Deposit is April 2nd.
@Butterfly01: yaaayyyy
@orianasenoj: yes 4/2
@Butterfly01: Good Night!! No update for me today, although my as of pushed out from 4/7-4/14, Thursday, today nothing moved, still lingering on 150, 810, 766, 570, 768 TC.
@Beenwaitingsince013125: I’m sure we will get the 571 code meaning the 570 is resolved then a ddd of 4/9 just seems they want to look over almost every return extra hard this year. But I’m starting to see the trends so I’m sure we will get our 846 next Friday 😊
@Butterfly01: did you get a ddd hun?
@OSOMAN16: I think butterfly is right my first year I had an 810 and I had to provide birth certifies for my dependent etc
@Butterfly01: thank you I was looking at trends about the 570 code and it seems to come after you verify your identity and the following week falls of and populates 846 code.
@OSOMAN16: I think it’s because it’s your first time filing you may have to verify your identity… code 810 is a hold they may send you a notice if it doesn’t resolve on it’s on
please hlp….what does 810 freeze mean?
its my first time filing ever….could that be it?
Hi everyone….i have a very much concern and its I updated with cade 810 today and had all good codes before, now its my first time filing ever….could that be the reason?
PLEASE ANY FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED…..Thnk you all.
Filed 1/28 updated to 570 dated for 3/3 and 971 dated for 3/10. Received 4464c letter dated for 2/11 and also received CP05 letter dated 3/10. No updates since. I amended my return last night because I did forget one small w2 for $462. I don’t know if that was holding it up or wat but hopefully something changes and I finally get my return. This has been he’ll this year. Just waiting and not getting any type of information as far as wats wrong. My as of date also has stayed the same for over a month as of is 3/17
@IAMHeiress: Hi Any updates yet?
@Beenwaitingsince013125:
You’re Welcome, Hopefully everyone will get there money soon. This has been the worse Tax season it took me 2 months to get my money.
@Butterfly01: thank you that is the information I was looking for.
@Sheila_33: thank you! It shows 846 for 4/2 for the amended return. I was prepared for the 16 weeks posted on IRS. I filed my amended 2 days after receiving my refund from the original return, on 2/27. I also opted for DD for the amended refund so hopefully they post it via direct deposit rather than mailing
@Beenwaitingsince013125: 570 code means a hold on account
@Ree: I am weekly.. Last Friday the 21 Transcript Populated with Code 570…. Today it had 571 saying Resolved additional account action
Followed by 846…
@StupidQuestion: that can happen! But when does it update I’ve had no changes. But congratulations
Pretty Please help if anyone can. I have code 570 but on the irs site it shows my account as updated to what I filed and it shows my refund. Does that mean I am good to go?
@Nat Bat: Remember, 05s can also be daily since they cycle through the same day as weeklies. Fingers crossed for some movement next week.
@Sheila_33 So do you remember me and my situation. I got a CP05 after my code 570 and then 971? Suddenly today I got a CP 5071, identity review. I completed it online. So how long will this take now?
