For all the people impatiently waiting on tax refunds.

A grapevine for taxpayers, by taxpayers.

Ask all of your tax refund questions.

The most frequently asked question we have is when will the IRS WMR update and what day are tax refund deposits. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to receive your tax refund.

When does IRS accept tax returns in 2021?

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on February 12, 2021.

When Can You File Taxes in 2021?

Most tax preparers will allow you to enter and submit your tax return beginning the first week of January 2021.  You don’t need to wait for the IRS to start accepting tax returns to start, but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January and some even later.  When you submit your return before the IRS begins processing, it will sit in a “queue” and be held until the date that the IRS will officially accept tax returns.  If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early in a test batch. This has resulted in early direct deposits in the past, but also major glitches because they are tests after all.

Where is the IRS Refund Cycle Chart?

2021 Refund Cycle Chart
The most recent tax refund cycle charts have already been published. The official IRS tax refund cycle chart has been eliminated and replaced with an IRS Information Guidelines for the Tax Preparation Community publication and the IRS says the best way to check the status of your refund is using the Where’s My Refund tool. However, various websites with refund calendars for the 2021 tax season (2020 tax year) have been updated with 2021 direct deposit and check mailing dates.

When to Expect My Refund?

IRS Refund Schedule Charts typically show that early filers whose returns are accepted before the end of January can anticipate a tax refund direct deposit as early as the first week of February.  The day that IRS deposits refunds varies but we notice trends that help you determine the time and days WMR updates and when your tax return is processed.  This is an explanation and FAQ about when the IRS updates WMR and Transcripts.

The refund calendar by the College Investor is a good reference which has been updated for 2021 here:  When To Expect My Tax Refund.

Hey Everybody. So I filed 5/24. Checked Trans Andy info was there. Still got 1 bar on WMR…My question I have a 570 bc they adjusted my amount of refund NOT DUE TO STIMULUS OR UNEMPLOYMENT. They already have the new amount at the top. I dont hane 846 yet but hopefully I’ll have it this week? It looks like they reduced my credit for my 401k “under 59 1/2draw during covid thing.Ot was reduced under $300 bucks. What yall think.???

@I Just Dont Understand: gmp has nothing to do with your tax refund, it is stimulus information only…..and not sure what your stimulus has to do with your transcripts. Btw, y’all know all of these payments are subject to offsets, right????

@TGIF: Mine has had the same thing for weeks; 2020 taxes filed, refund received, transcript updated to May 3; yet the GMP portal still says “You’re Eligible” with no date. Frank is knowledgeable; BUT dont get caught up in the dates he gives you bc he gave me an estimated date of 4/28… it never happened. patience is a virtue….What I’m saying is that; Im honest as hell…Just wait for it… dont waste your time calling, trying to figure out algorithms, transcript possibilities… we are all just players of this ridiculous game… Bless up

@nervousmomof3: Maybe I can help?? Okay so, my husband’s return was on hold for Id verification. He file his return January 23rd and was accepted around the 13th of February. He hasn’t received any letters in the mail stating that he needed to verify his identity.

Long story short, he ended up calling around March 5th and was told that he would have to wait 30 days from the date they spoke to receive his letter in the mail🙄lol. We called back Tuesday last week and a rep gave us the id verify phone number and once we called he was able to verify his identity on the spot. And although once she took his return off hold and back into processing, he was told to not call back until after 9 weeks. Literally a few days later , which was Saturday, he updated with a ddd of may 5th. I still have the number saved if you like it. They will ask for yo letter id number but don’t worry if you don’t have one, my husband didn’t have one either. They asked him questions off of one of his w2s in 2019 and questions from his 2020 tax return. They also verified dependents . Nothing to crazy. It took him lability less than 10 mins, including wait time altogether. It’s worth a try momma. I’m sorry your going through this. It’s going on may now this is absolutely insane!🤬

@nervousmomof3: Call the national advocate hotline and ask for a supervisor, and explain the situation and ask for an expedited hardship. There’s no good reason for them to be sitting on this that long over an id verify.

Just checking in. Filed in January. Accepted 2/12. Lost bars and all first week of March (any of this sound familiar? lol) Spoke to IRS 3/12. They said a letter was sent. Said I was missing my Health Marketplace forms. Faxed information on 3/15. Called 4/1. Was told to “stop calling so much” (this was my second call) and that they could not tell me if my information was received. Figured I would wait out my 10 weeks which ended 4/22. I’m a weekly updater so I was very hopeful when I checked this weekend….but NOTHING. Got through to someone today fairly quickly. The operator confirmed I was still in errors but that my information had been received. He was very nice and very apologetic. He said he didn’t really have any other information for me than that. So there we are. My as of date did finally change from 2/22 to 5/10 so we’ll see what happens this weekend.

@May: It depends if you owe taxes based off of your own personal situation. Generally, the more taxes you pay, the bigger your refund…..in my personal situation, I paid $3,600 taxes on the $36,000 I received in unemployment. I am supposed to receive a refund, because, between those taxes, and taxes I paid on my income before lay off, I overpaid the actual taxes I owed. Then they made first $10,000 of unemployment non taxable, so I got a $1400 back on April 2nd. So, without knowing exactly what your personal tax situation is, no one can possibly tell you whether or not you are entitled to a refund.

@Frank Garrett Thank you for replying. GMP tool has never changed from the generic ‘Payment Status Not Available’ message. My only hope is that as of date changing however it seems like it will just keep doing that indefinitely :(

When I click on the ‘i’ circle Info button under 2021 in the Account Balance section the following message is displayed:
Your Information Is Not Available at This Time
If you requested an adjustment to your account your information will not be available until that transaction is complete.

When I click on Tax Records the following message is displayed:
    2021 Economic Impact Payment Information
The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 authorized a third round of Economic Impact Payments.

@TGIF: On the account balance tab, 2021 should likely have an “i” in a circle for information, and then it will say it was created for the EIP. On the Tax records tab, it would show an amount if it has been processed. When you use GMP, what message is it giving you? Does it say you can recieve one but no date and shows account info for DD? Or is it the generic no date because not processed or might not qualify message? Since your as-off date changed, I still see that as a sign of movement. I’d hoped that GMP would have updated this past Saturday with a DDD of 5/5/21 or check mail date of 5/7/21. So, when you hit 5/10/21, the system is going to look to see what happened, and you’ll likely push out to 5/17 for as-off date, but you can also update Fri/Sat again later this week for a 5/12 DDD or 5/14 check date–to which the system would then look on the 17th to see if things processed or needs to kick out again.

@Stephanie Blackwolf: Maybe you can help me. I have waited over my 10 weeks, for my advocate to tell me that my return has been stopped altogether and that they need to verify my identity. Mind you for weeks I have called EVERYDAY and not once did anyone say anything about seeing any letters or any type of id verification. I am a struggling mom of 3. I sent over damn near everything I could think of that will verify me. Mind you they ask certain questions over the phone that verifies me so Im not really understanding what the issue can be. Now she is saying she is not sure how long it can take. Im pregnant and beyond stressed out by all of this and if any advice can be given that will help. Im so afraid to file next year.

@Jerryashley: For student loan accounts, you need to use the FEDLOAN id. Not the loan id from the servicer. That id from the government entity. If you have ever received letters from FED LOAN, it has the number on it. It’s a long number….like over 7 digits.

    Hello

I have been reading all of the comments and I am in the same boat. I think the IRS is provided some scripted answers based on that there is a glitch in the symptoms for those who filed early and that is the reason why we have not received our 3rd stim yet. My wife and I filed our taxes at the same time on February 12th and 14th thru Turbo Tax. My wife received her 3rd stimulus in the first batch that was sent right after the bill was signed. My in-law who hasn’t worked for five years received two stimuli and plus his 3rd. So, I don’t buy into it that there is a glitch. I will not be surprised that after May 17th (tax deadline) we will see a change in our status because the IRS will have the funds to continue with the payments of the stimulus.

I’m wondering if maybe you could help me find the answer to my question. I’ve searched and searched and asked in various groups but can’t find an answer anywhere. My DD was rejected on 4/23 the IRS has received my funds back and my transcript has updated with the 841 and the money is listed back as a credit on my account balance. I’m curious if my transcript is going to update when the check gets mailed, will there be a new 846?? According to the IRS manual online the check should be generated automatically and send “immediately within the same cycle” so shouldn’t it already be sent? Why can’t I see that on my transcripts? Please help ease my mind. I’ve been waiting for this money since 2/13 and am getting very frustrated with this whole year 😭

@Heather: Mine were accepted 2/13 and my received dated showed the same thing, 4/15/21. I don’t know why. I know mine was reviewed 3/8/21 and sat in the errors department until I called 2 weeks ago for them to tell me that and for me to figure it out with them. I called back until I got 2 very helpful agents who corrected the error while on the phone. As of this past Fri, I finally had updated on my transcript showing I’ll get my refund on 5/5, and I finally have the bar on WMR showing the same. No idea about 3rd stimulus but making progress. Try calling them. The number on this forum is the most helpful, with the ext 652. If it says buys, just keep on trying and you’ll get through pretty quickly.
