key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a āqueueā and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Sheila_33: So far my as of dates have been 3/10 – 3/17 – 3/24 – 3/31 – Now 4/7 I pray whatever they are working on they just go ahead and do it…………………….. F/A January 28th
Congratulations to those seeing refund dates! If you have the time, stick around and help others who may be stuck. :)
@Ambo: As of dates pushing out is a good thing, means the system is trying to resolve what’s holding you. When they are stuck in past dates, then it may take longer to resolve because it has to be done manually.
Congrats to 846! Still waiting :( but I am happy I spoke with my TA. She is sending my info to the IRS Monday! So I hope that I can get an update next week. Bummer Happy FRIDAYā itās still pay day ;)
@Sammy56: If you can access your tax account, you might be able to tell if there’s something holding you. For quite a few this year, the processing time is taking longer. But, if no tax topic on the Wmr, then you may just be waiting to be processed.
@Butterfly01: any update?
@MorgyDoodle: I just saw the second message about checking transcripts sorry
When did it update to 4/7 as of date?
@MorgyDoodle: if you couldnāt access your transcripts how do you know your as of date changed to 4/7?
@Ambo:
i just checked my transcripts and have the same as of date But also have 846 DDD of March 26!
@MorgyDoodle: and i had claimed education credits
@Sammy56: hello this happened to me one year 2020 and Iām not saying this is your situation but I ended up having to amend my 2020 taxesā¦. but just because your bars disappeared and came back and the verbiage change does not mean your not going to receive your refund . I would start by logging into your online account seeing if you have to verify and if not then see if you can call The TA line and see if they could assist youā¦. I hope that helped a little
ok guys
hang in there
i ID verified on march 11 online.
have not been able to access my transcripts until just now with DDD of March 26.
good luck everyone!
Ugh Iām done atp.
I verified in person on 3/5 and my as of date changed to 4/7 and nothing else.
Iām done checking. Done hoping. Done driving myself insane worrying about it
Congrats to those of you with 846 codes.
Hey guys I just checked and my transcripts updated with code 846 and a DDD of 3/26 Praise God⦠and remember if you have not received the verification letter in your online account or in your mailbox please go to your local IRS office and id verify in person ā¦.. I if verified 3/14 was told it would take 2-3 weeks and everything updated tonight I am a weekly
No 846.. my as of date just went to 4/7
I hope this isnāt the only update I get tonight. Iām going to keep watching and waiting. Fingers crossed.
Luck to everyone
Can someone please help
Hey guys here to give everyone hope. I filed in early January, got a 570 in Feb I think the 24th then 971 for 3/3, 60 day hold letter was available online on the 3rd. A couple days later I signed in and it asked me to verify my return. As of date was stuck on 3/10 for weeks. Iām in Nevada and itās not even 9pm, am a weekly, decided to log in to see, my transcripts updated with a 571 and 846 for 3/26. Iām actually thoroughly shocked I thought this was going to be a long wait. So hang in there everyone I know a lot of us had identical situations.
Hello my name is Sammy I have a question, when I filed my taxes it 1st said being processed and accepted, a few days later it said reviewing and my bars disappeared and a week later it said still being processed and a date will be provided when available and my bars are back, does that mean im not getting my return?
Who remembers what time it usually kicks off with updates?
@Sheila_33: thank you! š©·
@Madinjay: yeah itās still not showing the notice so Iām going to my local office
Good luck everyone!
Weāre all getting DDD tonight with 846 codes! Iām in the watch party. What time is the first one coming?
No I have not received my paper check yet I just updated today but last year when I got my paper check it was mailed on 03/21 which was next to my 846 code I received the check on Monday March 25 2024 a few days later hopefully when I receive my DDD this year it will be that smooth I will keep you updated
@Pinky: Have you received your paper check yet? If so, how long did it take?
Just to add my transcripts are still blank the rep also told me that the majority of people who has filed has had to id verify and she does not know why and even though I requested to receive my refund as a direct deposit they will probably mail a check due to my refund amount they did that last yearā¦. Please if your letter has not came yet make it to your local IRS building verify in person I hope this helps
I filed on 2/22 I received on my online account to id verify waited 2 weeks and requested a new letter which never came I drove to the IRS building as a walk-in I waited for 1 hour they take appt first was ask to show my 2024 return and two forms of id after 10 mins I successfully verified rep told me it would take 2-3 weeks before my return would update in the database but she said it has not been taking the full 3 weeks today I went from still being processed to return received and it is being processed I will probably get a check but if you are like me go to the office ID verify in person
@Butterfly01: WMR Finally updated after Almost two months… Now it’s Saying return being Processed Transcripts are still blank though.
Iām using Turbo tax and the IRS has sent my tax refund. It is scheduled for today but nothing has hit my account. How long do you think I have to wait?
lol!! I finally heard from my TA itās been 3 week since I requested one. She said she is going to send the info to have my 2024 refund to be released by Monday! My only thing is I owe for 2019⦠and she was going to send a payment plan for me⦠but since it took so long the IRS might process and take the balance⦠idk. At least I heard from her today!! Fingers crossed for an update tonight/tomorrow morning.
@Shakira My transcripts are still not populated still showing O. I verified on 3/7
@Qteepie77: call 800-830-5084 or 800-829-0922 the first number is to speak to someone if you have to verify ID but bad part is if you don’t have the stupid control number they are going to tell you that cant do anything until you receive it
Did ID verify, codes 150 and 971. As of date went from March 31 to April 7. Will keep updated, this has never happened before.
@DTM2025: Grand Rising. Wishing us all positive results
