Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Jenny04: Traditional banks, most likely 22nd and 23rd depending on daily/weekly. Early cards, possibly the 16th/17th. Depends on the cards and how soon they get the ACH payments sent out. Hang in there hun.

@Walter DOG: Look at your prior years transcripts and see if there are sny new codes. We had that last year, and our 2020 had a code we owed like 65.00 from that year, it resolved internally and we updated and had our refund on a normal time line.

@Anddy: No, they say allow that much time, not that it will take that much time. In fact IRS has stated (on IRS.gov) that they hope to have funds in accounts of those who filed prior to the 15th, by Feb 28.

@Anddy: It depends on your IRS received date all Path act folks should get a DDD date after the 15th and yes we are all waiting for Path to lift so for example if you received on February 2nd you’d have to wait till after path for deposit date hope that helps

@Anddy: the earliest you can get a DDD would be that week depending if are daily or weekly but most likely the following week. The 21 days is what they say can take for you to get refund. I don’t freak out till 21 days after path lifts I use it as a reference.

@Monee: that’s true. In my mind, if you have not gotten a notice to verify your identity or any other complex information, then it’s just an agonizingly waiting game. You hear so many stories about people who don’t get their refunds until the following year. It’s frightening! I think many will update within the next 2 weeks if not this upcoming Friday. 🤞🏽🤞🏽

@Monee: Yes. My as of date kept moving forward and backward. I have my trans in PDF format in my possession because it was unbelievable. I had not ever seen that before. I was not audited. I had received a notice in the mail and everything stating a delay but no reason at all. I sat and watched this site like a hawk lol even going to groups that were created by those of us who had gone through it. I was the last to update. I had completely stopped checking and then one day while at work I noticed a deposit hit my account

@Monee: 2020 was the tax season of no man’s land….no movement, just NA for months for me and quite a few others here, no letters sent, no adjustment made, it was like it sat on a desk in a stack of other lost returns. It happened to a lot of us. Hopefully it was a once in a lifetime event.

@Jersey girl: that’s exactly what I think happened to them as well! It’s as if the system started working on their returns, but just didn’t finish them…which would explain the half populated transcripts. I think A LOT of people will see updates this Friday, so hopefully that helps alleviate the stress they have! 😊

    • I Got My Refund!

Hello! Last year a lot of us got resequenced and updated to the delay message that some of y’all are seeing. My transcripts didn’t update last year until the week before path lifted with good codes and I was a early filer accepted in the text batch. This year I was also accepted in the test batch and when I first updated on my transcripts it only populated 0’s on my account transcript with my information half there. Last Friday all my transcripts populated with the year 2022 and my account transcript populated with all good codes. I also have seen ppl update with good codes after having still processing. Hopefully this may ease some minds. I honestly think a lot of you were resequenced.

@Walter DOG: honey…I hold the record for overthinking and worrying myself sick. It’s what I do and dang good at it haha. I think we will be okay…the worst case is yes, they could be reviewing us but there’s not a thing we can do about it. Let’s manifest good populated transcripts this Friday.

*** our 2023 transcripts will have good codes and dates ***

Once you submit the 1040 it’s up to a computer to decide when and how you will be processed. I filed when it opened last year and I dealt with N/A till after path was lifted. Once it was lifted they readjusted my refund do to me missing a 1099 and my codes were 570-970- 971 then 846. Im weekly so I get money last wed in February or first Wed in March. If you are path start counting 21 days from the 15th. My messages went from received to processing to still processing to DDD

For those who have the “as of dates” on PRIOR transcripts, I did some research and found this:

“The as of date at the top of your account transcript doesn’t have any bearing on where you are in the return processing. It is only a reflection of the last time the system ran your information against their database to see if you owed anything….”

Whether this is true or not, I can’t say. Just throwing the possibility out there that they were just running checks against our accounts at some point. Let’s hope that’s all it is and we are just over thinking.
