Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

    • I Got My Refund!

DDD is for 02/24 SBTPG has been funded since yesterday just waiting for it to be released which looks like it will either be tomorrow or Monday. I was hoping since they got it early they would release it early, but apparently that is not the case. Either way it will be here sometime.

All of the banks that release early by 5 days. Those banks release when they receive the deposit record that money is coming. They make it available right then and there. Not sure why all these refunds are held up in the ACH system. It’s frustrating I agree. We need our money and we need it now.

@Patience and Peace: That’s exactly what the contract says when you file. It says Cross River Bank will complete the ACH. I am assuming that if it was already sent there whether or not it was released early and we have no way to track it. SBTPG does not have record of my refund but my fees are paid.

I was just looking back at my transcript – it says 150 tax return filed March 10, 2025. Is that a typo? It has the 846 on there for February 25, 2025. I filed February 10. Just something weird I noticed.

@Justin0255: There’s the rub. Cross River Bank if you paid your fees upfront. Deducted from refund ALWAYS goes through SBTG. There is where the disconnect was.

@Justin0255: Exactly. I agree, I like being able to track it on SBTPG. It’s frustrating the customer service doesn’t know what to say and keep going round and round. I told the person I spoke to I understand this isn’t your fault but you have told me 3 different things and all want to know is if you have taken my fees, where is the money at now?

    Reply
  55. Vontane

I have a receive date on sbtpg saying irs funding for the 21 st my full refund amount WITHOUT any fees taken out yet, but why is it saying “Funded” then?? And another date saying the portion WITH fees taken out deposited on the 24th. Soooo, does that mean the IRS will officially deposit to sbtpg on the 21st and then they will release it to me on the 24th??

@Justin0255: True. I’m glad SBTG put up their site where you can check there too. People use to think that WE held on to the money, but TT is just the software company. But, we are the ones answering the phone calls and routing people either to WMR or SBTG. (so, yes we sound clueless) ;)

    Reply
  58. Patience and Peace

@Lisa in Atlanta: if your doing the $25 5 day fee it doesn’t go to Santa Barbara bank it’s going to a bank called Cross River so how do you work for TT and not know that?

  59. Mom@3

@Lisa in Atlanta: But, the TT site says my fees have been paid by my refund transfer but, SBTPG does not have my return so I think we are asking where is it? If we didn’t qualify for the 5 day early, and SBTPG doesn’t have it? I have Credit Karma and they do not hold it so, where is the money? I am sorry you are dealing with this, like things in the past, you are right TT did NOT think this through.

If I filed on 01/17 and was accepted on 01/22 will I get any update tonight ? I’m also a pather filed with H&R Block
My wmr still has 1 bar with the tax topic but every year I’ve received my ddd on 02/24 02/26 or the 27th but now it’s just sitting there with no update. Mind you I’ve been on this site for 6years now it’s very helpful

Just FYI: If you used TurboTax (TT) and have us take fees out of your refund than SBTPG becomes your “middle man”. Once your transcript generates the 846, the money is sent to your bank for them to hold until your DDD on the transcript/WMR. Your bank most likely will get the funds earlier and hold until that actual date – in this case SBTPG will say they got the funds but they won’t release them. This year that $25 fee was supposed to be for them releasing it as soon as they got it. But, they aren’t doing that so people are calling us, TurboTax. We can’t do anything, so we are saying you weren’t charged and sorry….about..that…
