Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Snaps: that hasn’t been true of how money moves since the early 2000s or so. Do you work for SBTPG? I’m so sick of being lied to about how out money actually works.

@Keisha: yes, if you ID verify on a Tuesday before 3:00 pm (I think) you should update that same week or at least that’s how it was last year. However, I’m not sure if it’s the same process when people verify by phone/online. I walked and ID verified in person last year too.

@Hey Katy: unfortunately IRS is not open on the weekends. Monday thru Friday only. I would call 1st thing in the morning though as you have a better chance of getting through to someone.

@Horsecharlie09 Who is “they”? TT does not receive your refund & SBTPG does not hold funds. They receive the funds allocated from the IRS to your unique identifier 1 day before 846 DD, take out what is owed (fees/advances) and send it out SAME DAY to the account listed on your return. Generally speaking when discussing NHB/TFI we are talking about that account – the one on your return.

SBTPG is ONLY for people who deducted fees from refund, OR took a refund advance, OR both. If you did not do any of those, SBTPG is irrelevant to you.

I dislike SBTPG overall and would avoid them if at all possible – however I’m thankful for my advance this year and only wish to help explain some of the craziness this year!

Not sure if this will apply to everyone having issues finding their info on sbtpg, but if you’re married and filing jointly (not sure about separately as I’ve never done that) and are not the first person listed on the return, you need to look up the info with the primary taxpayer’s social security number. I’ve never been able to look up anything on sbtpg with my own social, always my spouse’s.

@Snaps: but at bottom of SBTPG it says they are green dot or something like that indicating that they too are NHB. So, why are they holding money? There’s no excuse. They ARE giving it to ppl early who paid upfront and didn’t opt for the 5 days early. But not to ppl who often for fees being taken from refund. I feel like ppl affiliated with these companies are coming here trying to vouch 4 them. But u can’t make sense if it! Make it make sense

@Clos: really? Bc there are some ppl who are in fact getting it earlier and with fees taken out. It’s just a good majority have it being held. I’ve seen multiple ppl who have Wells Fargo for instance already received theirs. Also, just bc something was 1 way years ago, doesn’t mean it still operates the same way today. Regardless of what they ” can do “, I’m sure there are clauses saying they can’t do other things. Like keep money AFTER they’ve been paid!

@sojiki: no. They are holding ppls money. Call them and ask them why. I personally made a BBB complaint. Bc they have received the money, took the fees and have not distributed the money. At that point the DDD date is out the window when they have the $ and got paid. The only way this changes is by calling stating your complaints, and actually filing a complaint. Nobody else( company & banks ) are doing this!

@Disco Dan: Did you file with TT or JH? HRB ? Curious as I filed with TT and have sofi bank no fees taken out got rejected for the 5 days early and have a DD of 2/24

To those who updates everyone letting us know that they got their deposit. Can you PLZ include who you did your taxes through, if through TT, did u get the 5 day early option? And if you did it through TT, did u pay your fees upfront or out of your refund. Plz include this info as a lot of ppl are finding out that the bank affiliated with TT is holding ppls money even though they are received the refund AND take. Their fees ( they’ve been paid ) .
    Thx in advance!

Can we speak to someone at the IRS on Saturdays??? If so is it a specific number? I just found out you can request an OBR to stop an offset if you can prove financial hardship but it has to be done before they apply the offset.

@Big ben: I experienced this two years ago and it was a disaster because I moved and the sent it to my old address. I just woke up today and I received the same message as you. Previously, they could not provide me with any reason as to why a manual check was sent. It’s very frustrating to have to wait by the mail.
