Where’s My Refund?

Where’s My Refund?

When does IRS accept tax returns in 2020?

IRS e-file Open Date is January 27, 2020.

This is the date the IRS will begin accepting tax returns.  You can submit now and they will sit in queue until 1/27.

When Can You File Taxes in 2020?

Most tax preparers will allow you to enter and submit your tax return beginning the first week of January 2020.  You don’t need to wait for the IRS to start accepting tax returns to start, but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January and some even later.  When you submit your return before the IRS begins processing, it will sit in a “queue” and be held until the date that the IRS will officially accept tax returns.  If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early in a test batch. This has resulted in early direct deposits in the past, but also major glitches because they are tests after all.

Where is the IRS Refund Cycle Chart?

2020 Refund Cycle Chart

The most recent tax refund cycle charts have already been published. The official IRS tax refund cycle chart has been eliminated and replaced with an IRS Information Guidelines for the Tax Preparation Community publication and the IRS says the best way to check the status of your refund is using the Where’s My Refund tool. However, various websites with refund calendars for the 2020 tax season (2019 tax year) have been updated with 2020 direct deposit and check mailing dates.

When to Expect My Refund?

IRS Refund Schedule Charts typically show that early filers whose returns are accepted before the end of January can anticipate a tax refund direct deposit as early as the first week of February.  The day that IRS deposits refunds varies but we notice trends that help you determine the time and days WMR updates and when your tax return is processed.

The refund calendar by the College Investor is a good reference which has been updated for 2020 here:  When To Expect My Tax Refund.

    To everyone who is having issues with ID Pin Retrieval tool/ online transcripts here is how to do it. I have already been registered since last year, however it kept saying info does not match. So i went to register again, said account exists, but you have to RE-REGISTER. Yes it will ask you to verify credit report info and phone number and then you are in. FYI they soft pull experian, it helps to pull your free report

    Hello all! I guess I am an early bird. Anywho, my brother and I filed our taxes last week via Free Tax USA. We both got an e-mail this morning that our return was accepted by the IRS (although not officially open until January 27th). Since we are in no rush for our refunds, we wouldn’t mind being in a “test batch,” but it would be nice to see something right after Feb 15th (we both have EIC and CTC). I just checked the IRS Where’s My Refund website and we are both sitting on the first orange bar with a tax topic 152. Let the anxiety begin lol.

    @Moma3byz: when they receive your signed form, they will make the adjustments and close the audit. It then takes approximately 2-3 weeks for the refund to be released.

    @kathyarzola:

    It is absolutely normal since the IRS does not officially begin the new tax season until 01/27 this year.

    I filed Friday night and was accepted Monday afternoon. It just means the IRS received it without glaring issues and will likely remain in queue until tax season begins. These are just test batches making sure systems are working properly.

    @Lisa in Atlanta:

    They ARE accepting (receiving) returns. The IRS is even acknowledging this on their tracker. But all it means is it was transmitted and no glaring issues arose (or it would have been rejected) – basically, the names, birthdays and socials match and none have been used on another return at this time.

    @Ashley Fair: Good point!

    And just fyi: ALL of the tax platforms say “accepted by the IRS” but what they really mean is that you have completed the tax return submission through their sites. As it says above the IRS is not really accepting returns until January 27.

    Good morning. For those using the Refund Advance from TurboTax (($250 to 2000) note that you have to be using the TurboTax Visa Debit Card for your refund. You cannot use direct deposit.

    There are no fees because TT wants you to use the debit card all the time for your purchases. Your refund advance money will be deposited on the card once the IRS accepts your return.

    Does anyone who’s been audited with an adjustment know how long after you sign the paper agreeing with the changes, does it take to get your refund? I know it says 8-16 weeks but of course it’s last years return and I’m hoping it’s sooner.

    Did you use TurboTax? I filed on 1/11 using TurboTax and this year I decided to get the refund advance which I never done before so fingers crossed everything runs smoothly. My dumb self totally forgot I was getting the refund advance at first so I decided to pay my fees upfront so my refund didn’t get delayed not even thinking it’s going to be delayed and processed through their bank anyway because of the advance lmao. Any chance they would refund me my filing fees and take it from my refund? Lol just a thought.
