Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Dentonj88: it can change .. some people who were weekly one year became daily last year . Some situations can cause you to be in the “weekly” pool for awhile .. like an audit .. review .. suspected fraud etc . It’s a different situation for everyone . Unfortunately I been weekly last 5 years but always got my deposit when the 1st path deposits were released

The IRS rejected my return and the code they sent me for being rejected was IP Pin number for identity protection. I was able to retrieve the numbers through the IRS ID me website the same day, which was 1/18/25. I resubmitted my return and still haven’t been accepted. Just feel like I missed the test batch at this point, and maybe Monday they’ll accept it. Idk. Anybody have any insight on this situation? Please help

@Ashleyrenae113: it can depend on it you set up a payment plan for the owed taxes. We owed one year and set up a payment plan. As long as we made our payments on time they didnt touch any of our following years refunds.

Ohhh nvm, I think I understand, you are saying that letter is available for all taxpayers if we want to send out to anyone to verify that taxes haven’t been done yet, right?

@Amuz1234: You may not have finished processing. We had that happen last year. You might check later and see if it finishes up or you may have to wait and cycle thru again to finish up next week.

Hello I have codes 150 806 768 766 with my refund amount next to it. I’m a pather and my last code is 03 with a 2-10-25 process date. So this mean I am done until 2-15-25 when path lifts?

@VA757pather: That is a standard letter. If you’re buying a house, etc. it is verification that the 2024 return hasn’t been processed yet since lendors will ask for 3 years past tax returns. No worries. :)

@VA757pather: You could possibly be sent thru this week or next and update on transcripts with all codes but no refund code and a c freeze is placed on your return until the path lifts on Feb 15th.Then you cycle thru again and that freeze lifts and your refund is released.

Also, on my transcripts I have something that says
    2024 – VERIFICATION OF NON-FILING LETTER
    It’s under the “RETURN TRANSCRIPTS”
??? I’ve never seen that before

I was accepted yesterday; I have tax topic 152, with one bar, and it says “it is being processed,” I file the same way every year with tax slayer; however this is my first year in test batch, never had any issues I’ve only had to id verify last year when I got the 5071c letter (I think that’s the number) I had to just verify online with a number they sent …

But how does this test batch work if you are a PATHER?

We are seeing some deposit dates of 1/27 for non pathers popping up on transcripts.

@wade123: If you’re accepted in the test batch, you’ll process, update on transcripts with the path freeze, and wait until it lifts. Then, you’ll process again to remove the freeze and update with a refund date. If all goes smooth. :)

@Sheila_33: Got it, one last question. If I go through a test batch and there are no issues, is that considered the same as processing my return and its technically done but hiding in the background waiting for the PATH to lift, or will it still go through full processing later?
