Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Clos: ‘after waiting’ how long? was ur refund delayed very long afterv path lifted? This was last year u forgot a 1099,not this year?

Hey there quick question, if anyone knows!

For home business expenses, on the indirect expenses do you add up the whole year of rent and utilities and put that down or do you just put what the monthly expenses are?

    TIA :)

    Reply
  16. Clos

The computer will make minor adjustments for you if you forgot a 1099 or w-2. After waiting my refund was adjusted by $500 due to a missing 1099 last year. I am weekly so when I get processed usually the next wed I will have my money. Feb 22nd will be the first day for Path.

@Bubba: Wage transcripts can fill in anytime throughout the year. If your account is filled out, you are good with or without the wage filled in. Some people do not even see theirs filled in until the end of the year. The account transcript is the one to watch for your 846.

Last year was very hectic waiting to be processed it took 45 days from when I filed till I got my money. I am a path so I count my 21 days from the 15th. The whole N/A thing means it hasn’t been processed yet. The still being processed is just that either you got resequenced and just not done yet. I always get my on the last Wed of Feb or first Wed in March

@Bubba: Your tax guy is right, the IRS threshold for reporting those earnings is $600 or more. So for $2.17 it’s best to ignore since you’ve filed your taxes already.

@2020 was a long year: has your transcripts filled out do you have any codes if you have hold code with that message then yes pulled for review but if your transcripts haven’t processed yet then it just means your still processing and you been in system awhile

    Reply

@Walter DOG: Yes. The bar is still there at 1 bar. The message changed from “processing” to “still processing”
For what it is worth….the bar portion never ever ever changes until after we receive our return. The message being different is what is worrisome as I stated that I have read it means nothing but have also read that it means it was pulled for review.

Hey everyone hope all is well. Have a question I just checked my mail and received a 1099int in the amount of 2.17 cents for our escrow. We bought a home last year and was unaware that escrow gains interest. I reached out to my tax guy and he said it’s not worth amending for that low of a amount. What’s your guys thoughts will it cause any problems with my refund or anything. Any help would be appreciated. My tax guy is a enrolled agent and gave me his advice

On WMR what is the difference between “it is being processed” and “it is still being processed”? I still have 1 bar but the message changed to “still being processed” on Friday. I filed on the 24th and it was accepted on the 27th. I can’t remember if it did this before (years previously) or not. I want to say that it has but I am not sure if I had only read it or experienced it myself. I have seen some comments elsewhere that it is normal and then other comments saying that it is an indication that the return was pulled for review. Any insights would be appreciated.
