key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Jersey girl:Theres been a few. If no future dates,shouldn’t be a worry.
What do we think the first DD date will be for ACTC, EIC filers?
@Sharon Grayson: That is pretty much how it works, although it’s verified that it does work 5 days early *when* it does work.
Anyone in Arkansas got their state refund yet?
So what I think TT is saying is that as soon as the IRS releases your funds you will not have to wait if you paid the additional $25 for 5 days early… normally I pay fees with my refund and end up waiting extra days because sbtpg likes to hold money .. so it will now go through Cross River bank and be released early than normal with TurboTax….I’m not buying 5 days though maybe 2 or 3….This is what I am getting from this
@Walter DOG: ok thank you
@Stephen: thank you. I need all the prayer I can get. Trusting God at this point and just going to wait my turn and cheer yal on while I wait.
@Jersey girl: mine has that to and a few others on here has to and my 2022 has July 2024 I don’t know why but as long as the as of dates has done past and no other codes or notices then nothing to worry about the system does checks from time to time
@Monee: I’m sorry 😔 I am praying for you to update and not even need to verify there were a lot last year that were told they had to and didn’t really need to they updated by the following update. I’m praying for that for you
@Stephen: No. I gave up. The last person I talked to drained me. Lol. From what everyone told me, I have to id verify but I don’t have a letter because it’s not done being reviewed to see if I have to verify. What the heck?! I’m more lost than when I started. I’m wondering if I’d verify can clear itself or something?? But I doubt it because that would be too easy. A letter was requested for me on the 31st, and if it doesn’t come by the end of next week I’m supposed to call back. But the letter hasn’t been sent yet, or created. I’m over it.
@WonderingMe: pather?
Hello everyone hopefully someone can help me. On my record of account for 2023 it has an as of date of Jan 13 2025 on it. Is this normal to have? I never noticed it until now.
@Angela11k: Doubt it. Probably will just lock you out or something. Everyone would red flagged….
I was told if you keep checking wmr or your transcripts it flags your account and they will send you a letter to verify. Is this true?
@Justmeginger: no, I haven’t called anyone just yet. I filed it on the 31st. I received a text to say it has been successfully transmitted to the IRS. Then I received a text that said it was rejected in the go back and make corrections. However, I paid the fee upfront. Didn’t see anything to correct
@Str8Nervous: that is not a flag. As of now since your 2024 tax has not been processed you would be consider a non filler. That letter is verification for ppl needing proof for other years.
