In February, the employer sends a copy to the government. The IRS gets their copy in May. Next Fall, after the rush, the IRS runs a matching program to see if you filed all of your income and if you filed it correctly. If there is an error and you would owe, you get a CP2000 telling you that they found the error and to send the money within 30 days.

Filed 2/5, tried to order transcripts, not yet, I had to use my new adress, moved first of January, post office and IRS got something going on.
