Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a ā€œqueueā€ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@snowCake7514: Thank you thank ypuuuu so much for this number!!! I was able to speak to an agent finally and all this time they needed a copy of my W2 because my tax withheld didn’t match with what TurboTax had entered. I asked the agent like you guys don’t send letters or call anybody she’s like unfortunately we don’t because we keep trying to verify with your employer which my employer at the time so garbage they are so unwilling To help anybody that has worked for them so she told me I had to go on upload On their website and I was able to upload my W-2 there she said once they verify it, I’ll get my refund. I feel so much weight lifted off my shoulders now. Hopefully it doesn’t take long.

@Just here waiting: I feel you. When I contacted the congressman here in Florida after almost 2 months they still couldn’t get a call back from the TAS agent. I ended up calling irs and pleading my case and she put through a request for TAS. She said she didn’t know why they wouldn’t answer the congressman’s office but the referral finally got put in by her

@Jacky_FL: You have to call the IRS. When you get verified, whether in person, online, or over the phone, you get up to 9 weeks to receive your refund. It’s passed 9 weeks since you verified. Call the IRS ASAP. Call this IRS number and asked to be transferred to the right department to assist you. (267) 941-1083
I use this number to get assistance from the IRS fast.

I received a 3rd letter from the IRS dated July 8th. It’s a 2644c letter stating that they needed an additional 60 days. I called the IRS today and was told that they can’t see any issues with my return. They just need more time. So I informed them I also have a unemployment 1099G form that I filed. The lady said that is what was missing. So I had to upload my 1099G form to them. Hopefully now I will see some action soon.

@shelleybeanss unfortunately, I can’t access my transcript online to see if I got the coveted 846 code. ID.me seem to always deny me access to the IRS online portal. I usually do everything with the IRS over the phone. Got my ip-pin over the phone and all. Like I said before, I also did the verification without a letter over the phone.

@snowCake7514: return received means they’re acknowledging they have it. They’re still working on it. Until that 2nd bar appears on WMR, or the 846 code on your transcripts; it’s not done processing yet

04/17 filed, got accepted same day. Two weeks later, WMR changed to “Action required” letter. Got 12C letter two weeks later. Sent scanned documents. Two weeks later, WMR updated to “documents received” and “processing tax return”. Four days later, WMR updated to “identity verification needed”.
Identity verification disappeared two days later without me doing anything. WMR updated to “return received, still processing”. Called IRS 06/29, verified over phone without receiving identity verification letter. WMR updated 07/03 to “return received, it’s being processed”. What does this mean? Should I expect a DDD on 07/10?

So now after getting one letter to reconcile info on my return by faxing them copies , I now have to wait for another letter to verify my identification.

    • I Got My Refund!

@Jennyb: it’s definitely got me wondering. My fees are supposed to come out of the refund, as well as my advance TT gave me back in January. But I’ve seen quite a few people on here say they were supposed to get direct deposit and the IRS mails a check anyway. And most of those people have fees taken out of refund on their little profile on here. Just wondering how all of that is going to work. Possibly having to track down where to make the payment/send it to. The IRS deciding to mail a check causes additional problems this year lol I guess that’s par for this tax season though. It’s been riddled with issues

@shelleybeanss: didn’t even think about this. I paid upfront as well but that’s for filing correct?
