key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Red Dawn: They need 60 days more to find info on there computer nothing i have to do
Guys ok so my husband had to id verify on the 13th of may she said everything else looked good just went back into processing and that to check wmr should get a refund within 7 to 21 days and I’m reading may take up to 9 weeks is this correct anybody else in the same situation?
Just got my mail irs wants 60 more days as 123 days isnt enough they need more info thats not on there computer what bs
@Harry a: what does your letter say?
Anyone else getting letters today but not on transcript?
@Red Dawn: I kind of feel like maybe they’re now working their way through the early filters by date received now that they’re starting to finish their reviews. Our dates have been similar for the notices and 570 and 571 codes, as well as the wages update date. Only difference is I filed and was accepted on 1/24. So I’m thinking that you will get your 846 in this coming week. Just a gut feeling. Hope I’m right. Good vibes to you and everyone else!
Informed mail today letter from irs but nothing about letter on transcript
123 thats how many days im waiting heard nothing from congress for 3 weeks looks like we are looking at double return for next year and what about the interest
@Cody96 I called the irs yesterday and was told its more like 20 weeks and I had to wait that long before I could get someone to look into my return.
Just so we’re clear, current tax laws and restrictions were put in place 5 years ago
My current refund time table from January 29th to today
10,713,600 seconds
178,560 minutes
2976 hours
124 days
17 weeks and 5 days
33.88% of 2024
And that is our wonderful IRS working quickly!!!!!!!!!!!!
1 week and 6 days away from my 16 week mark from when I amended my taxes… not an update, or anything. Just says up to 16 weeks, and it’s definitely getting there. 😒 because there isn’t even two weeks left.
@Eddleman23: Same with me
The IRS said their gonna put a note in that says my family is experiencing a hardship so they need to get this done ASAP…. okay I’ll believe it when I see it..
@Nimo: When did you file?
Stuck on as of April 22 2024 no movement
So tired of the weekly disappointment of no movement. Had a small glimmer when the wages transcript filled in Tuesday but nada. 570 dated 3/4 and a 922 on last years transcripts dated 5/5. Can’t figure out what the 922 is for. Thought it was my 1099 maybe I forgot last year but that’s on the transcripts for last year. Truly no clue what it’s for. IRS people can’t tell me what they may be missing. Ugh 😑
I have a 571 code since 5/20. Wages filled in but no movement since 🥺
No change again this week 😭 wages filled in this week but no movement… but I think it updates all day so hopefully we see something soon. It’s ridiculous
Good Morning All, Well no update for me, F/A 1/29/2024 have 570 – 971 along with my first as of date 3/4/2024 the only change I have received is my as of date changed to 6/3/2024 about 2 weeks ago. I really was hopeful that I would see something change today at the very least a 571!!!!!!!!
@Adkins, TX: Sorry that you didn’t get any good news. I’ve been following all of us long-timers (Just use different names to reflect my feelings at the time). That wage update was the first movement I’d had in awhile and then I got my 846. I forget, but did you have a 570 code that was corrected with a 571? I’ve been sitting with that resolved code for about a month. Gotta believe that maybe you all missed a cutoff or something for this week and that you all will get your 846s next week at the latest. FINGERS CROSSED!
Day 122 still no change
I filled in Jan 29th, received a verification letter in Feb and another letter in March telling me they were holding my refund and to give it 60 days. I have it 70 days with no change and called the irs only to be told to call if I haven’t received anything by July 15th.
@GoodFriday: my wage updated this week but no movement :(
Finally good news! Been on here since I filed and was accepted 1/24. 2 60 day notices, an Amendment on 3/24, and the notorious 570 and 971 code since mid Feb. Wage transcripts updated earlier this week. Have a DD for 6/5 this morning.
Wow nothing again. This is crazy!
Zero change this week again…0
@Donna: A lot of us still left on here are early filers still waiting since January. Hopefully your 4 weeks doesn’t turn into waiting 4+ months as we have had to do.
Good luck
@Donna: I wish any of us knew. I’ve been waiting just over 4 months and no clue yet
It’s been 4 weeks all ready no update when is my refund coming?
🤞🏼🤞🏼
🙏🏼🙏🏼
I haven’t had any issues getting into the irs account today, was just in 5 minutes ago and have been in half dozen times since 4am. No update, but able to get in with no problem
