Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Red Dawn: I kind of feel like maybe they’re now working their way through the early filters by date received now that they’re starting to finish their reviews. Our dates have been similar for the notices and 570 and 571 codes, as well as the wages update date. Only difference is I filed and was accepted on 1/24. So I’m thinking that you will get your 846 in this coming week. Just a gut feeling. Hope I’m right. Good vibes to you and everyone else!

1 week and 6 days away from my 16 week mark from when I amended my taxes… not an update, or anything. Just says up to 16 weeks, and it’s definitely getting there. 😒 because there isn’t even two weeks left.

So tired of the weekly disappointment of no movement. Had a small glimmer when the wages transcript filled in Tuesday but nada. 570 dated 3/4 and a 922 on last years transcripts dated 5/5. Can’t figure out what the 922 is for. Thought it was my 1099 maybe I forgot last year but that’s on the transcripts for last year. Truly no clue what it’s for. IRS people can’t tell me what they may be missing. Ugh 😑

Good Morning All, Well no update for me, F/A 1/29/2024 have 570 – 971 along with my first as of date 3/4/2024 the only change I have received is my as of date changed to 6/3/2024 about 2 weeks ago. I really was hopeful that I would see something change today at the very least a 571!!!!!!!!

@Adkins, TX: Sorry that you didn’t get any good news. I’ve been following all of us long-timers (Just use different names to reflect my feelings at the time). That wage update was the first movement I’d had in awhile and then I got my 846. I forget, but did you have a 570 code that was corrected with a 571? I’ve been sitting with that resolved code for about a month. Gotta believe that maybe you all missed a cutoff or something for this week and that you all will get your 846s next week at the latest. FINGERS CROSSED!

I filled in Jan 29th, received a verification letter in Feb and another letter in March telling me they were holding my refund and to give it 60 days. I have it 70 days with no change and called the irs only to be told to call if I haven’t received anything by July 15th.

Finally good news! Been on here since I filed and was accepted 1/24. 2 60 day notices, an Amendment on 3/24, and the notorious 570 and 971 code since mid Feb. Wage transcripts updated earlier this week. Have a DD for 6/5 this morning.
