Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a โ€œqueueโ€ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

    • I Got My Refund!

Iโ€™m feeling very defeated. I have an advocate yet Iโ€™m advocating for myself, STILL! I havenโ€™t heard from my congressional aide even though I emailed her Friday and yesterday. I tried to contact the open case line twice this morning and was hung up on both times. When I got through to them yesterday the comment โ€œwell youโ€™re the one that went to your representativesโ€ was made. So now all of this is to punish me because youโ€™re holding my money?! Iโ€™m just at a loss here and feeling like they could care less about me or the fact that itโ€™s causing a hardship .

Filled my taxes on 21/02 by mail 37 days down the line nothing has updated. Called the IRS today. They had zero information for me. I like how they can just act ignorant but you can’t act ignorant about their letter for even ๐Ÿ™„ 20 days.

    • I Got My Refund!

So my former employer sent a W2-C and it states that if I filed already I need to amend. The error that Iโ€™m seeing is that I didnโ€™t have any federal taken out last year and when I filed I put in box 1 my total income instead of 0. Do I need to amend or wait and see if the advocate can fix it. Iโ€™m tired of waiting and my patience is very thin with this. I just want it to be over.

@CHICAGOSRB: congrats on the 846!! I also have had 570 since February but received 4464C letter same month. Congressman has been involved since beginning of April if not late March. Referral was sent for advocate April 8th but I wasnโ€™t notified of this. I found out through the IRS one had been assigned. Called and called her AND her supervisor finally after a week advocate answered and said I needed to speak to congressional aide. No updates other than as of date changing from 3/11 to 5/6 a couple weeks ago. Hopefully I hear something this week but the congressional aide told me they canโ€™t make the IRS move any faster so idk.

Filed on 1/19 and accepted same day. Got the 570/971 early Feb w/a date of 3/4. Got the CP05 letter 3 weeks later in the mail. Got congressman’s office involved 3/13 and heard back 4/13 that it was an issue verifying a 1099-R. Sent a copy of the 1099-R to them same day and finally on 4/30 got my 846 (dated 5/3) . When going thru congressman’s office I was assigned an advocate who NEVER answered her phone (voicemail said up to 4w for a callback which never came). How the IRS is this inefficient shocks me. The whole process is just stupid.

@P: is there a specific number to call to verify? I was asked a couple weeks ago by an agent had I verified my return. The call dropped after she said that. I get that exact message when I try to verify online.

@Tired 101: Uma tell yall like this I just got off the phone with tax advocate. She went into my account and told me it was an issue with my identity verification after verifying online 2 months ago. If u get the message “We are not able to provide assistance via the identification tool” your verification did not go through online. You will have to call to verify. I am supposed to get a call back to verify in less than an hour. That’s just a lil of what I have.
