Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@shelleybeansss Yes. I am in North Florida also. Jacksonville to be exact. So if we have the same congressman don’t hold your breath. I also requested an in person appointment at the local office where I was told by the advocate line that I can walk in May 18th for more info that is the earliest appointment available. That day is first come first serve also. So yes have hope and it’s definitely a waiting game with no sure answers.

@JustWaiting24: I’m sorry 😞 that’s about what I’m assuming will happen with my congressman’s office here in north Florida. Not holding my breath. I’m hoping seeing I’ve been waiting 3 months with one 60 day letter at the beginning of feb and no other notices since….will make them look into it but I don’t have faith

The way my congressman office was not even following up with me unless I reached out to them is not the experience I was expecting with so many people saying reach out to them they can help. Also I submitted to their office and tax advocate office all my income info, an eviction notice, repossession letter, etc still after having a tax advocate for a month no update.

I would rather call the IRS knowing someone will answer and at least look into my account instead of leaving numerous voicemails for an advocate that never even reached out to say I’m working on it or be patient with me . Again, this is my experience with the tax advocate assigned by my congressman. I have seen in other groups where people have said their congressman was able to get things moving along for them however, I do not believe it had anything to do with the congressman, but rather the IRS just being able to Manually process them at that time.

When you call the tax advocate line they tell you they cannot assist you that you can only get information from your advocate mind you a whole month and no contact from the advocate reached out to congressman office several times to inform them of no contact from the advocate and they also state they have not heard anything from the advocate. In my opinion, I’d rather listen to the IRS sell me a load of crap.

Her phone does not even ring vm comes right on. Have left several messages no cb; even reached out to her manager several times same thing no cb. So what I didn’t know initially that when you are assigned a text advocate, you are no longer able to communicate with the IRS. So calling the IRS is a complete waste. They will tell you you have a tax advocate reach out to them.

*Long*For those reaching out to congressman let me give my experience; I filed accepted 01/29, 03/04 570, 03/11 971; IRS always stated verifying wages, income; Reached out to congressman 03/16 and was assigned a tax advocate 3 days later. Have had 0 contact with tax advocate.

I reached out to my congressman in the middle of March and they told me to wait till after April 15 and they couldn’t do anything until then. I contacted them again Today so hopefully they can help me. I did end up amending at the end of March, but my original refund should still be processed and I’ve had no movement I filed January 11th. Accepted 1/19 570 2/26 cp05 3/4

@nick: I know two people waiting since end of January. They called IRS on yesterday on.ly to have to ID verify. Never mind, that they had already done ID verify. They never received a letter of anything saying they needed to verify. Hadn’t called until yesterday.

Congressman has been zero help. Actually, his receptionist and boy is she making him look bad right now. I reached out to them last month. In the meantime I have been assigned TA. Cannot get ahold of her and have been trying since yesterday. Her phones always off so I left a vm today. It’s been 3 months since I filed. Only thing that has changed is as of date and that’s the first change since February. I’m over it.

So today I tried contacting my congressman. I went to his page found the link and I submitted my request. It does ask for your social security number FYI. I should mention I amended my tax return on April 6 so we will see what happens!

@BeeBee40: There should be a link on your Congressmans page for “assistance with a federal agency”
Fill out the form, and you can attach any supporting documents you need. I did it last week and 4 days later I got my refund.
My dates and codes were identical to yours.

@Dj: Amy is not an IRS employee but has been thru quite a few past issues in the past so is offering advice to help which is what we do here. And in reference to your comment that your return is complete. It has been posted to the master file, I agree, but until whatever is keeping that 846 from posting is resolved, you are still processing.
