key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Red Dawn: one daughter updated today to 846 has as of 2/26 and notice 3/4 she checked Friday nothing updated checked today because mail shows something from the treasury department and was updated to 846 and she’s supposed to be weekly 05 so idk other daughter as of 3/4 notice 3/11 60 day review she had not updated yet and alot didn’t have id verify they actually had reviews
My daughter was on 60 day review as of 2/26 and notice issued 3/4 she checked Friday was not updated she checked today because shows something in mail from Treasury department on informed delivery and she was updated to 846 approved but not sure when because it was not updated Friday and she’s supposed to be weekly but apparently that doesn’t matter with these reviews cause she checked all day Friday and no update
This is probably a stupid question but since TurboTax took their fees directly from my bank account last week since my refund came so late, does this mean my refund won’t be going through sbtpg?
@Harry a: I did file a W2G and win/losses statements. I have an additional child tax credit.
@Red Dawn: me too do you have college credits and eitc?
I am still haven’t updated since February. My as of date says February 19th. I received my notice on March 11th in my account but no movement at all. I reached out to my state representative again and they’re going to see what’s going on. I hope to hear some good news soon 🥹🙏🏼✨
Congrats to everyone getting a DDD! 🥳
UPDATE GUYS
I’ve been stuck in review limbo since late February. Got my first 60 day letter on 3/4, got a second one at the end of March saying the need an additional 60 days. I’m a weekly so I’m normally only checking transcripts once a week but ever since this started, I’ve been checking almost every day just in case. I checked this morning and finally saw that my as of date changed and I have a DDD of 4/12!!!! This mess is finally over!

Beyond frustrated.
@Motherlove: Same here – telling me bc extreme hardship I get TA after end June !?!? I just hope that means they see that they will finish up before 4/15
@F/A January!:Did they tell you that you couldn’t get one untill 60 day review was up. I don’t understand I thought you could get tax advocate if you qualify for one .Tax advocate also said if criteria for allowing people with 60 day review change she would let me know…that’s crazy
Just a quick question if anyone has any idea. I had my refund sent to my chime account it was saved from last year. The account is still good but SBTG has had it since Friday says posted to my account but I still haven’t received it. Any one have any idea how long it’ll take to post to my Chime account? Seems odd it hasn’t posted by now. I’m avoiding making any calls bc I know that won’t move it any faster. Just asking if anyone has had this experience and can provide estimate.
@Motherlove: I was told the very same by TA intake person 2 weeks ago
I think I finally have been resolved. My transcript says a DD on 4/12/24. WMR still has not moved. We’ll see if some money shows up.
@Shelia_33 Can you please tell me why the tax advocate said I couldn’t get tax advocate untill after June 28…..filed 1/29 accept same day… transcript update March 15 with 570 no 971 code receive 4464c letter on match 25..call tax advocate April 4 …tax advocate told me I did qualify for advocate but could not get one untill June 28. I have hardships and can prove it..
@Sheila_33: Good morning. I’ve been checking in daily. Hopefully those that are still waiting process soon. Each tax season is bringing more issues and frustrations! Thanks again for all the support you give here!
@TexasGirl124: From what I’ve seen in the past, an advocate can push your return to the front and get it processed faster. Reviews are handled in order of received, so having an advocate can put your return on top of the “stack” to be addressed. Watch that “as of” date for changes since that can be a clue that you’re back into processing.
@Shawn from NC: ive been filing for 10yrs never had any problems. This shit is keeping me up at night because I actually needed that money this yr
So has anyone done an amendment for this year ? I see the IRS will issue amendments through Direct deposit . How long did you have to truly wait ?
@GotaHeadache: wow no matter what they do, it’s always some crazy stuff with the irs. They can find crazy funding for everything besides these first 4 heavy months of tax returns. Makes no sense
@Shawn from NC: mine got accepted the next day after I filled and showed up on my transcript a week after I filed it. I still haven’t even received original refund
Good evening everyone. Does anyone know if the amended returns are going faster this year since they are done electronically? I have to amend. Wanted to know if anyone has noticed a shorter time than the 16 weeks.
Welp.. new info from IRS today. I have to do wage verification although they haven’t sent me any notification of this. Apparently they have 60 days to send the letter out so I could possibly receive the letter on or after April 22nd. For reference I filed Jan 22, accepted 23. I sent in documents February 26th and now they’re saying June 26th is the end of 120 days. If the information I sent won’t suffice I get to do this all over again. Their also not seeing that I sent in documents like I was told previously and the verification department hasn’t even touched my return.
And in the meantime….
While some still wait on their simple refund, our leaders are planning another $70M
Payout for student loans.
Some send up the Bat signal
@Ulan: well it would probably be in their best interest to give me my money so they don’t have to owe me extra 😅
@Mandie: i waited last year till august and got 150$ in interest on 5k$ return
I filed 2/1
Accepted 2/1
570 3/11
CC 20240805
As of 3/25
A taxpayer advocate called me on 4/2 said my employer reported lower wages and my w2 didn’t match. My employer had to write a letter on letterhead and uploaded it to the irs.gov/tasconnect.
Does anyone know if this does speed up the process? and who else is working with an advocate?
So is the irs gonna start owing those of us still waiting interest on our refunds soon lol
@Sdiego: I’m so happy for you!!!! 🙌
@Sdiego: did your transcripts or WMR ever update?
@Sdiego: who did you file with? And what bank did it go through?
@Sdiego: did you have a cp05 letter and what date was it?
I just received my direct deposit this morning 🤗
Just talked to irs the guy was very nice and answered my questions he said my cp05 letter on 3/18 could take up to 60 days but he saw nothing wrong with my return, lots of people cheating on eitc and college credits so they are checking income from employers and college records so more waiting
What type of information do you need to take with you when you verify your identity at a tax office? I couldn’t not verify over the phone for some reason.
@Eddleman23: 2/01
@Harry a: when did you file? I filed 2/12.
Was wondering if anyone else has had this happen. I tried logging into where’s my refund and I got “unavailable” no status provided. Called 800 number and got unable to provide refund status at this time. F/A 2/5
@Eddleman23: im on day 66 05er processed 3/11 also same return as last three years
So just called the IRS and I’ve had a 570 since the 3/11 (that’s the date beside it) and the lady told me we were selected for random review and to wait 4 to 6 weeks from that date and I should update well this week is week 5 yall I’m so excited and praying for an update Friday 🙏 (05er)
