Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

“We’ve recently become aware of a few employees who received communication from the IRS that their tax return is being held for review. The issue seems to be that the IRS does not have a record of reported wages for some employees. Our W2 wages are reported through a vendor partner, ADP. ADP has verified with us that the wages were reported and we have requested that they follow-up with the Internal Revenue Service to resolve the issue. We will follow-up as more information comes to light. If you have employees that inform you of this issue, please provide assurance that we are aware of the issue and working to resolve as quickly as possible.”

I filed 2/1 got code 570. I called IRS they are now telling me that the wages reported by my ex-employer does not match the w-2. I checked the http://www.ssa.gov page and sure enough it reflects a way lower amount. They are asking that I get a letter on company letterhead stating the dates of employment, wages and withholdings or paystubs. My ex-employer refuses to give me paystubs. He is now saying he will not give me such letter. What can I do?

@BeeBee40: Not always. If you’ve been manually put back into the system, then its giving itself 3 cycle dates to finish up. So, if it thinks it can do it, it won’t push out on the next update. When I was under review/and an audit years ago, my date started moving again and pushed out 3 cycles. The next update (I was a weekly) the as of date didn’t push out, but the next update I had my 846 and my as of date pushed out to make sure my deposit was made within that time frame.

    • I Got My Refund!

@penelope: As of dates are placed when you first post to the master file, its to get the return processed by that time. If there’s a freeze on the return, errors, etc. the date will stick until whatever is holding it can be manually resolved. If it pushes out and then snaps back, the system is trying to resolve an issue on its own by internally referencing information, and it can’t. Once it starts pushing out again and the date stays ahead, then its possible that whatever is holding the return has been manually addressed and the system has gotten it back into processing. Unfortunately, for some this year, after one issue has been resolved, like an id verify, then another issue has appeared, like a review or freeze.

Soooo.. I’ve read on another forum that the 4464C and CP05 are the same thing and is automatically 120 days for review. The letter has never been updated. Does anyone know anything about this? I’d call the IRS myself but after yesterday’s phone call I’m liable to cuss out the next person that tells me “YOU JUST HAVE TO WAIT”
